Very cozy quiet accommodation tucked away in the historic Higashiyama. The building is a little creaky, but it is an old traditional Japanese building so it is expected somewhat. Staff were super friendly and welcoming and happy to provide any advice or guidance requested. Dorm bed was comfortable and the shower was clean and functional. Free coffee and tea were provided. Highly recommended for a quiet stay. Definitely not one for partying

The directions to HARUYA Higashiyama were very clear and we had an easy time arriving. We stayed in a private room and it was very nice and comfortable. We slept well and enjoyed the use of the private door. The staff was very kind and made great recommendations for sight seeing and the local bath houses. Our time in Kyoto was wonderful.

Very old ryokan, very small with a very intimate feeling. Extremely small. In a cute quiet area.

A wonderful historic building down a very quaint alley. I was surprised that we had bunk beds as I wouldn’t have booked it if I had know (just because my son and I have both had knee surgeries in the past year so made it a bit difficult to get in the bed) but we managed well enough and the staff were awesome and very welcoming! It was in a very good location!

I had a great time at Hostel Haruya. It's definitely meant to be a quiet environment with a traditional feel to it, so I'd recommend going elsewhere if you're looking for a more lively/energetic hostel. The place was very quaint with a small library room. The staff member who checked me in could speak English and was very nice; he went out of his way to help show me which bus routes to take for a trip I was doing the next day. The hostel is within walking distance of a more lively area with food

This hostel was in a great location with extremely nice staff. My only complaint is that our room was on the second floor. The only way to get to the second floor was up extremely steep stairs and the only bathroom was on the first floor. Besides that, it was a lovely experience.

I stayed in a private room for 2 nights then 1 night in the dorm. The location is great and the house has lots of character. It's not really set up for socializing if that's a consideration. The private room was very cozy and comfortable and had a private bathroom which was great. The dorm bed was comfortable but the room was very tight and there is only one shower and 1 toilet (which is just outside in the garden) which wasn't ideal since the dorm rooms are upstairs. The staff were lovely!

This was a great little place. I loved the fact it is an old building as it had all the characters of a traditional Japanese house. My only complaint was there was only 1 shower room and 1 male toilet (outside). Although every time I used the facility it was never busy. There were people staying here but also didn't seem the most social of places. I would however recommend this hostel. One of the hostess was so lovely and helped us map out the must do things in Kyoto.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good value for money. 10 minute walk to Gion District and main restaurant/bar area. Only downside was slightly noisy as we were in the room next to reception. People unaware it was a bedroom and making their long distance phone calls home around 02.30am. Had to get up and ask them to be quiet. Perhaps a sign acknowledging people are asleep in there may help. Also found the room to be quite warm, a fan would have been nice.

    Very Good

The location is great, and the gentleman at the front desk has been super nice and helpful. However, he said the building is 100 years old and it shows. I guess we were biased having just biked the shiminami kaido and looking forward to a comfortable place... This wasn't it. Shower was decent, but the toilet stalls are actually outside, one female and one mixed. the kitchen was very basic with little counter top space, and the kitchen sink seemed to be decades old. mixed dorm room was cramped
