Overview

Take on the slopes in style at HI Banff Alpine Centre. We're a rustic chalet hostel with cosy common rooms and fires to sit around after a day racing down the Canadian Rockies. Booking for summertime? We've got discounts on rafting trips, or we can help you rent a bike for cheap. Our on-site pub, the Storm Cellar, has free foosball, pool and darts, plus we put on nightly interactive events from epic jam sessions to cringe-free karaoke (we hope).

Location

You'll find us on Tunnel Mountain, close to Banff's nightlife scene but far enough away to enjoy low-key mountain life in a scenic setting. If you're coming to us from Banff Brewster Bus Station, walk seven minutes to Elk Street Transit Hub and we're a 5-minute bus ride away. You'll see our sign on the left after passing Tunnel Mountain Resort. Fancy a mini hike? It's a 40-minute trek to Surprise Corner, where you'll get amazing views over the mountains and the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

Rooms and Dorms

As well as private rooms, we have mixed and female-only dorms with en-suites or shared bathrooms. Bedding's always included, and our lockers are so big that a human can fit in them (please don't try, though)! The lockers have outlets inside, so you can charge your phone safely while you're out practising your freestyle.

Extras and activities

Our kitchens – yep, two of 'em – are huge industrial-style spaces with facilities to match. They have seats so you can socialise while your food's sizzling away, and there's a walk-in fridge. If you'd rather treat yourself to some melty, gooey poutine, Cougar Pete's restaurant is on-site. Use the free, fast Wi-Fi to watch some technique-improving ski videos on YouTube while you eat. When you're done, our 24-hour reception staff can sort you out with a free local bus pass for a deposit.

Great place. Parking included. Bit far from centre but acceptable given price. Dorms are good, clean beds, ample space and storage. Washrooms were great. Great atmosphere.

The facilities were kept very clean and organized, I was especially impressed by the kitchen. The staff were so lovely and helpful with recommendations. Easily one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in; really appreciate the quiet hours too.

Really good but much too expensive for what you get. Having said that, it was high summer in Banff and everywhere was expensive.

Overall this hostel was fantastic, the rooms were always clean and the facilitys were useful. The laundry machines were not the best and not very clean but the kitchen was great. The atmosphere was the only thing that let the hostel down, not much was happening and the events barely ran.The bar was also closed the Saturday. I would defiantly recommend this hostel, but if you want a social based hostel, I would book elsewhere. If you are wanting a safe and clean hostel, this is the place to be.

Overall good stay in a private room with 1 other person. We were out all day so we weren't at the hostel much, but it was good overall. The walls are thin and we could hear people walking in the hallway and the doors closing also disrupted sleep several times. I have an electric car and asked if the electricity could be turned on in the parking lot and the desk person didn't make any effort whatsoever to assist. That was frustrating and I lost sleep due to having to travel to town to charge.

Accommodations in Banff are very expensive and hard to find so this place is great for backpackers or budget travelers. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast at the on-site restaurant (not included) was very good. My 6 bunk dorm room was a bit small as was shared bathroom. My complaints were (1) not enough parking on property if you have a rental car and (2) twice they closed off the bar downstairs for a private party, which was bad enough but also made it hard to sleep due to noise

I wouldn't say it's value for money, but honestly all the summer accommodation in Banff is so overpriced that you don't really have much choice. But we found the hostel to be clean and well-equipped enough for our needs. We stayed one night in a 2-person private room and two nights in a 4-person mixed gender dorm. The private room was nice, and the dorm a little packed but still not unliveable. The staff were super friendly and helpful!

We booked a twin room and were given a 4-bed dorm instead, so very disappointing. The hostel looks very tired and dated. No atmosphere in August.
