Overview

Take on the slopes in style at HI Banff Alpine Centre. We're a rustic chalet hostel with cosy common rooms and fires to sit around after a day racing down the Canadian Rockies. Booking for summertime? We've got discounts on rafting trips, or we can help you rent a bike for cheap. Our on-site pub, the Storm Cellar, has free foosball, pool and darts, plus we put on nightly interactive events from epic jam sessions to cringe-free karaoke (we hope).

Location

You'll find us on Tunnel Mountain, close to Banff's nightlife scene but far enough away to enjoy low-key mountain life in a scenic setting. If you're coming to us from Banff Brewster Bus Station, walk seven minutes to Elk Street Transit Hub and we're a 5-minute bus ride away. You'll see our sign on the left after passing Tunnel Mountain Resort. Fancy a mini hike? It's a 40-minute trek to Surprise Corner, where you'll get amazing views over the mountains and the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

Rooms and Dorms

As well as private rooms, we have mixed and female-only dorms with en-suites or shared bathrooms. Bedding's always included, and our lockers are so big that a human can fit in them (please don't try, though)! The lockers have outlets inside, so you can charge your phone safely while you're out practising your freestyle.

Extras and activities

Our kitchens – yep, two of 'em – are huge industrial-style spaces with facilities to match. They have seats so you can socialise while your food's sizzling away, and there's a walk-in fridge. If you'd rather treat yourself to some melty, gooey poutine, Cougar Pete's restaurant is on-site. Use the free, fast Wi-Fi to watch some technique-improving ski videos on YouTube while you eat. When you're done, our 24-hour reception staff can sort you out with a free local bus pass for a deposit.

I booked this hostel because it was--indeed--a hostel, had availability, and was the second cheapest in town. That said, this place is amazing and I extended my stay 5 more nights. Super clean, great amenities, and most importantly the front desk staff is the **** (not limited to, but especially, Travis, Misty, Ben, and Jimmy). I had so many questions for them (including about an oil change, who asks that?) and they were always extremely friendly and knew the answers.

The Banff hostel was outstanding. All facilities and rooms were new or newly-remodeled, sparkling clean and the use of space was efficient. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, going out of their way to accommodate a special request we made and to ensure that our stay was as comfortable as possible. They also offered tourism tips and maps; this was very helpful. We very much appreciated the "quiet after 11:00pm" rule. And the location could not be beat!

SUCH a great stay here even though it was short! The rooms and bathrooms were spotless and they have a really great little bar in the basement. It's a short walk into town and you get a free bus pass if you'd prefer. Great location and great staff!

Great affordable place in Banff. Just the location is not in main downtown. Probably a 1 km walk uphill. So don't travel with a lot of luggage. Bus connectivity is good. Almost one bus every 30 min by the Roam city transit. Lot of young Australian crowd in the hostel at the time I was staying m

Good hostel can’t thank the staff enough they’re incredibly helpful with getting buses around, hikes to do, even have a phone you can use for free to call around town etc. It’s out of town but only 20minute walk or you can take the bus plus they give you a free public bus pass for your time there. Will stay again definitely

The location is a bit further away, but since you've coming to hike, it's manageable. I really liked the bus pass and the kitchen facilities were awesome. It seemed to be a bit quiet at the time I came there, but I think the price sorts out all the cheapest backpackers (like myself) into this hostel which means that they might not be joining the hostel activities that actively. Lockers were good and you can borrow bearspray from the front desk if needed!

Lovely location. Bit pricey considering breakfast isn't included. Bathrooms were clean but the bedroom wasnt vacuumed for the whole 10 days I was there. Hostel gives you a free bus pass to get to town and back, 5 min bus trip. Or 20 min walk. The one really annoying thing for me was my key card kept not working, but apparently they know there's an issue with room 504 door. Over all I would recommend. It's a beautiful building with lovely common areas to lounge in, including an outside porch.
