Take on the slopes in style at HI Banff Alpine Centre. We're a rustic chalet hostel with cosy common rooms and fires to sit around after a day racing down the Canadian Rockies. Booking for summertime? We've got discounts on rafting trips, or we can help you rent a bike for cheap. Our on-site pub, the Storm Cellar, has free foosball, pool and darts, plus we put on nightly interactive events from epic jam sessions to cringe-free karaoke (we hope).

You'll find us on Tunnel Mountain, close to Banff's nightlife scene but far enough away to enjoy low-key mountain life in a scenic setting. If you're coming to us from Banff Brewster Bus Station, walk seven minutes to Elk Street Transit Hub and we're a 5-minute bus ride away. You'll see our sign on the left after passing Tunnel Mountain Resort. Fancy a mini hike? It's a 40-minute trek to Surprise Corner, where you'll get amazing views over the mountains and the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

Rooms and Dorms

As well as private rooms, we have mixed and female-only dorms with en-suites or shared bathrooms. Bedding's always included, and our lockers are so big that a human can fit in them (please don't try, though)! The lockers have outlets inside, so you can charge your phone safely while you're out practising your freestyle.

Extras and activities

Our kitchens – yep, two of 'em – are huge industrial-style spaces with facilities to match. They have seats so you can socialise while your food's sizzling away, and there's a walk-in fridge. If you'd rather treat yourself to some melty, gooey poutine, Cougar Pete's restaurant is on-site. Use the free, fast Wi-Fi to watch some technique-improving ski videos on YouTube while you eat. When you're done, our 24-hour reception staff can sort you out with a free local bus pass for a deposit.

Travelling during different times - the staff wore masks, limited the number of people in rooms and shared space, like the kitchen, for health and safety. Felt low risk and safe. The common room was empty, but a great place to play cards and a big buck right outside the window :)

It was a nice hostel in Banff. We enjoyed our stay. We had a 4 person mixed form but we were in it alone which was nice and private!

Myself and 2 of my girlfriends spent 3 nights here over New Years so the hostel and town itself was pretty busy. (No complaints, we had a vehicle but parking was hard to come by) BUT! Staying here, they gave us free bus passes to get into the town of Banff which was awesome. Didn’t have to worry about parking or having a bevvy hehe. (The bus stop is only like a 2 min walk away). We ate at the restaurant a few times and the food was delicious! All the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Everything about this hostel is very nice. It's safe and comfortable. The only thing is, the location is really not ideal as you have to take a bus to get into Banff (and that's where the ski shuttles depart). These buses only go every 40 minutes which leads to a lot of long, cold waits. I must have spent hours and hours waiting for this bus during my week there, and that's in freezing temperatures.

Had a good quick stay so we didn't have to drive back to the city un order to enjoy back to back pow days in BNP. Check in was easy, location was super clean. Lots of long term residents or possible staff for Banff Town businesses who couldn't find staff housing or traditional housing. Not a problem though. Will be back!

Spacious common rooms, lots of wildlife around the hostel and super clean! Huge kitchen (with oven) and on-site cafe for those who don't want to cook. Cheap drinks at bar!

Good value hostel, free bus pass into town, good staff, especially in the bar. Lacked a bit of atmosphere and most others were there for the whole season so didn't meet many people to ride with.

It is very different to how it reads online! Don’t get me wrong we enjoyed our stay here and absolutely loved Banff but probably wouldn’t stay again. The rooms were pretty clean however were very tiny and the lockers were tall and skinny so didn’t really fit a suitcase. The walk down to town is at least 20-30 minutes and in winter it is a very icy walk. There are bus’s however they are very unreliable and you could be waiting over 30 minutes. The bathrooms were not overly clean and small.

Beautiful location and loved the perk of the free bus pass into town! Our room was located in the new building, which also seemed to house a great number of ski school guests (as we were warned on arrival). It was very noisy in the mornings, evenings and late at night (after the hostel arranged pub crawl). These guests seemed to take priority really and it probably would have been better to not house other guests so close to their communal areas.
