Property Description

The 3,363-metre peak of Mt. Edith Cavell towers over our little hostel set in a narrow valley below this spectacular setting. Aside from easy access to breath-taking views of the Angel Glacier and the Cavell Meadows, HI-Mount Edith Cavell is the perfect base to start backcountry hikes into the Tonquin Valley.

This is a wilderness hostel with limited creature comforts - no running water, no showers, and no flush toilets. We do have purified water for cooking, a refrigerator, propane stoves and lights.

It is important to note that in the winter (Oct to May) the ROAD UP TO THE HOSTEL IS CLOSED, guests will be required to hike, ski, or snowshoe up to the hostel from the highway. *approx 11km*

**NOTE - Due to the wilderness location, accessibility for the physically disabled is challenging (call for further details) Credit Card needed when making reservations. Due to lack of direct/reliable communication with the Wilderness Hostels the Central Reservation Office is not able to make same day arrival reservations - walk in basis only. 48 hours individual cancellation - at all wilderness hostels. Book ahead to avoid any disappointment. As these smaller hostels are very popular both winter and summer.

OCT TO MAY - KEY ACCESS ONLY -You will need to obtain the key at the HI-JASPER HOSTEL. (Damage/Key deposit will be required)

JUNE TO SEPT
CHECK IN - 5PM TO 10PM

A word on HI-Wilderness Hostels

Get back to nature with HI's network of wilderness hostels. They're a varied bunch! Some have lights powered by propane, some have rustic wood-burning saunas, at some you'll get electricity, and at others you'll get to pump your own water. But whatever you're after, these hostels with their simple comforts immerse you in the natural splendour of the Rockies.

You'll be able to savour true silence, night skies bursting with stars and the knowledge that some of the world's most magnificent outdoors is, really, just out the door. Dotted along the Icefields Parkway, and throughout the Parks, these hostels are set into pockets of trees, alongside creeks, or at the base of thousand-foot-high rock faces. Whether you get there by car, bike or on foot, your efforts are rewarded with some of the finer, simpler things in life - a warm fire, cozy lounges, and the chance to share food with new friends while you relive the day's adventures.

Whole area was kept very warm as they have wood burning stoves in all rooms. Kitchen was kept clean and comfortable. Staff were knowledgeable and very friendly. The Edith Cavell hike was amazing as well and is very close to the hostel.

I would stay here in a heartbeat; I love LOVE this hostel! If you don’t mind not taking showers, pee and poop in a latrine, cook with propane and use a lantern, this place is for you! I had a good night’s sleep and the Mt.Edith Cavell, Athabasca Falls and Jasper are a short distance drive. If you want to stay in the wilderness without staying in a tent, this place is for you. Make sure you bring the food inside, otherwise, pikas will get inside of your car and eat your food lol!

Love the coziness of the place. Had a bit if a heart attack because the CO detector was malfunctioning... nonetheless great experience staying in a wilderness hostel for the first time. Will definitely do that again.

I loved the wilderness hostel. It was such a great experience and got to meet some awesome people. The manager was very friendly and helpful. It was very far from the town and all the hikes. There are a few up there, but since I was traveling alone it wasn’t recommended to do them on my own since there is no service. So going to town was a bit of work. Also be sure to have plenty of food before going up.

Nice place, staff (Itiebe) was great! Facility was good, location good, only complaint was about fellow travelers getting up in the night and marching around flashing their flashlights, this happened four times, causing six of us to leave the dorm and move to our cars in middle if the night! Note to future customers: there is a gate at the bottom of the road which requires a 4 digit code. Obtain this from HI Jasper before your trip. Either email, ring or pop in. I didn’t as I wasn’t aware, and with no Canadian phone I received a nice phone bill after my call to the supporting hostels. It’s a good place though once you’re there.
