Hostelling International New York has been praised by many of our visitors for their sociable atmosphere. Our guests say their staff are 'very helpful and welcoming', they have 'good communal areas to mingle' in and 'they offer a lot of extra activities (tours, trips) which are value-for-money'. There's two metro stations within two blocks, connecting directly to the Lincoln Centre, Times Square, Penn Station, Brooklyn and Soho. We like their large sunken patio - a rare space to stretch out in Manhattan.

Property Description

An affordable and always inviting welcome to the greatest city in the world!

Located in a historic castle-like building minutes from Central Park and Times Square, Hostelling International-New York provides unmatched value in accommodations and facilities catering to individual and group travelers seeking the best communal stay experience in New York City.

HI New York's modern amenities include more than two floors of common room space for socializing, five banquet rooms for meetings and events and a 36-burner kitchen available for guest use, and of course free wifi. We also house Manhattan's largest private outdoor patio, available for impromptu soccer games or trainings and orientations.

Our 24-hour Welcome and Information desk is always there to help with any questions. In addition, guests can get information on what to visit in the city and how to get there safely and securely. Or if this is your first time visiting New York, our daily guided tours and activities provide a friendly and accessible introduction to everything New York has to offer, from gospel concerts in Harlem to naked cowboys in Times Square!

From New Year’s Eve through the summer to Thanksgiving and Christmas we have all special events covered. Not to mention free activities every night. After mingling with other hostlers, a tour lead group embarks on a pub crawl around NYC. If you can’t make the pub crawl then you can join our nightclubbing events on Friday and Saturday nights. Four to five nights a week we have comedy, improv, and variety shows in the theater room at our hostel. If that’s not enough, you can take Jerry’s Grand Tour, a 12+ hour tour of NYC, on Saturdays from 10am and Tuesdays at 11am. Finally, our volunteer-led outings to the Macy’s firework show July 4th, Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, and Times Square on New Year’s Eve to watch the ball drop have been a great tour tradition at Hostelling International for year!. To sign up for these and many other tours and activities, visit our information desk.

After a full day of exploring New York, spend your evenings socializing at our outdoor patio in Manhattan's largest privately owned Green space. If you have seen the entire city and want to stay in, our large, cozy in-house theater offers a perfect opportunity to rest up and reinvigorate for the coming days. Our free billiards table and great common spaces are great spots to meet fellow hostellers while spending time relaxing. The lounge and game rooms are open 24/7.

We have a huge common kitchen and newly renovated bathrooms and showers, with free linen and towels. Each room has individual heat/air conditioning. Overview

Looking for a friendly, fun and fantastic hostel? Come and stay at HI NYC Hostel! We're not only set within a spectacular historic castle-like building, but we've also got a huge common room, a billiards room and even a theatre! We're located within easy reach of Times Square and Central Park, so you'll have the city on your doorstep. Cook up a storm in our 36-burner kitchen or catch an improv or comedy show in the theatre – there's something on most nights. We've also got the biggest private outdoor patio in Manhattan.

Location

Nestled in the leafy streets of the Upper West Side, our hostel is a snug, affordable base. There’s a ton of culture up here, thanks to the American Museum of Natural History and the Lincoln Center. Catch a show on Broadway (seven stops on subway line one) or spend a sunny afternoon with the locals in Central Park. When you’re ready to head out, take the subway at 103 St Station (a seven-minute walk away) for the A, B and C lines to Midtown and Tribeca.

Rooms and Dorms

All our rooms are either mixed or single-sex dorms that have been recently renovated, so they're cosy and comfy. They’re heated or air conditioned depending on the season, with free linen and towels on each bed (ideal if you’re travelling light). You can secure your valuables and luggage in our handy lockers – just remember to bring your own lock.

Extras and activities

Our reception's open 24/7, so you can stay out as late as you want in the city that never sleeps. And we love to socialise too! As well as free activities every night, you can join our regular festivities – we'll celebrate everything from July 4th to NYE. First time in New York? We'll take you out on a pub crawl around the city. If you love to dance, we go clubbing on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're here for a while we've got public computers for staying in touch and a laundry service.

I really liked staying here. It was safe, clean, and convenient. My only complaint is that they relentlessly harass you via email to review your stay. I guess for the price, it's worth it.

The atmosphere of the place was great!!!! I spent my first night here, went on the bar crawl---Which the host of that is dope--and do what one does and we created a little crew, all which remained in contact though-out the NYC trip. Its great for meeting people and exploring Uptown/Harlem or the Bronx. As far as accommodations it no different then a cool hotel. Kinda pricey for having no breakfast or anything like that. I stayed my first night here then two night at the Moore in BK.

Great staff at the front desk. They have an in-house cafe, which is convenient. It's a very large hostel in a very cool neighborhood on the upper west side. Very clean. Huge Kitchen in the basement with everything you need if you want to cook.

A perfectly good hostel. The sheets are threadbare in the way you'd expect from a hostel that's been around for a while, but the bathrooms are quite nice, the wifi is great, and the common areas are just fine. Close to the subway, too. No complaints.

The rooms and bathrooms were clean and functional. Clean sheets and towels were provided on arrival, with an additional blanket available for colder nights but heater:m/ air conditioner could be adjusted from the room. There were lots of spots to hang out and many activities organised by the hostel through different parts of the day so something to interest everyone. The hostel was very close- one block- to the downtown subway and there were lots of options for food nearby. A great spot!

The hostel is located well in terms of convenience to both the subway and Central Park. I found it to be very clean throughout, which is no easy task with the winter weather conditions. Great food available in the lobby for purchase and plenty of free and paid activities that are curated by the hostel. I like how your bed is made for you prior to your arrival so there’s no fussing with such in the middle of the night. Quiet hours are welcome and 24 hour attentive front desk help is also great.

Nice hostel, the unique downsize is that they just have one old elevator in the whole hostel. Takes forever to get to your floor, especially if you have luggage. I didn't find the signs to the stairs easier at first, either. Other than that, pretty good hostel and awesome staff. I really love the food they sell at the snack bar and the options for lunch/breakfast or anything else!
