If you're searching for an off-the-wall travel experience, book into the 150-year-old HI Ottawa Jail Hostel. You can sleep in a real-life solitary confinement cell (converted for comfort, of course!) – how's that for original? We go easy on your budget too. You'll get to eat free breakfasts with your fellow inmates (sorry, the other guests!) every morning and you'll get a tour of the place for no extra charge
– including Death Row. When it's time to relax, head to our awesome outdoor patio to catch some sunny rays and meet other travellers.

We're in the middle of downtown Ottawa, a 7-minute walk from ByWard Market – a hotspot for Canadian delicacies like local cheese and maple-spiked chocolate. From Ottawa International Airport, get on bus 97 to the Rideau Shopping Centre, then jump off at the MacKenzie King Bridge stop after about half an hour. Walk east towards the stairs and you'll find our hostel at the base. From Ottawa Train Station, you'll need to grab bus 95 and follow the same walking directions as from the airport.

Rooms and Dorms

We've got private rooms or, for a more authentic prison experience, sleep alongside others in one of our mixed, male- or female-only dorms. You'll have your linen and towels included, and there's air con to keep you cool. Each bunk's got its own reading light, so you can stay up late with a book from the library.

Extras and activities

Join one of our movie nights (Shawshank Redemption, anyone?) in the TV lounge or come and have a drink or two at our regular parties. You can head off on one of our pub crawls if you're into the nightlife scene. There's a games room for downtime and we have 24-hour security to keep you and your stuff safe. You'll be able to use the free Wi-Fi (your Instagram notifications will start buzzing the moment you check into our unique location!) and make your own home-cooked meals in the kitchen.

A completely unique experience that I would completely recommend to anyone thinking of staying in Ottawa. Book at this hostel and you won't regret it! Make sure you do the tour to understand the history of the place. The free breakfast was great. Facilities were fine. Atmosphere was lovely.

We stayed in a double bed private room for 2 nights. We had a bed, a night stand, a stool and a shelf / hooks. Shared bathroom / shower that was cleaned daily. The location is amazing! Walking distance to everything. The tour was very interesting and the guide was awesome. Overall, I would stay here again and it is well worth the experience.

The prison aspect is definitely the draw, and colors the whole experience. Has everything you'd expect from a hostel, well located, well kept. I stay here often.

Everything was really good except for the fact that exactly every day at 10:30pm they would use a speaker for the entire building to announce that the friggin' jail house tour would start at 11am, I mean who cares. That was absolutely obnoxious to hear every single morning same hour, I thought it was something going on in the build.

Cool experience, great location and after the first night of freaking out, it’s actually quite comfortable! The breakfast was quite impressive with lots of fruit which is nice! The staff are really friendly and the place is clean. Communal showers and bathrooms on each level, as most rooms don’t have a private bathroom - just wish there was shelving or something to put clothes and toiletries while in the shower. Pretty cool, would recommend. Make sure to do the free jail tour as well!

    Very Good

More historic than comfortable. Facilities are older and not in the greatest of shape. Beds are EXTREMELY uncomfortable and dorms can be quite smelly. Location was okay, but nothing to write home about. Breakfast was decent and free, so that's nice. It's cool to experience a night in a jail, but don't expect to have the greatest sleep!

Stayed here for 2 nights. Fun for the novelty of staying in a jail cell but the atmosphere of previous HI hostels I’ve stayed in was significantly lacking which has always been the main reason I stay with HI when I’m in North America. The showers need updating as well as the lights in the corridors.
