We're set in an elegant, clapboard building that's about as all-American as you can get, with the buzz of downtown Portland is a brief stroll away. Check in at our 24-hour reception, stow your stuff in the luggage store and head straight to the leafy gardens with their courtyard and BBQ – fill up on burgers and beers. Cook up a meal in the kitchen or grab a brew in our café, then kick back with a movie in our sociable common rooms.

Location

No more puzzling over transport maps – our hostel is just 15 minutes’ walk from the nearest Greyhound station and 16 minutes from the Amtrak station. From the airport, hop on the red line MAX train to Providence Park Station, then walk five blocks north on 18th Avenue to the hostel. The Nob Hill district is an Instagrammer’s dream, with its picture-perfect streets, artisan cafés and affordable craft-brew bars. Stretch your legs with a wilderness hike in the sprawling Forest Park.

Rooms and Dorms

You can choose between our dorms (if you’re feeling social) and private rooms (if you like your space). The hostel's in a quiet neighbourhood so there's no need to worry about noisy neighbours. Security lockers in the rooms are big enough for your essential stuff and linen is included. There’s free Wi-Fi, too, so you can unwind with your favourite show before bed.

This was my first time staying in a hostel, so I don't have anything to compare it to. It was very clean and secure. The people that were also staying were very nice and welcoming. We all sat in the Secret Garden and listened to some live music played by the host (I'm not good with names, sorry!) and he had an amazing voice! It was a great experience!

Was here during the whole covid-19 lockdown in Portland. While us travellers were having a bit of a nightmare with the situation, Jim and his staff went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and put on a great time during difficult circumstances. The hostel itself is in a lovely, quiet-but-trendy area, and has great facilities. I'll be back when the world returns to normal!

We loved it here. They allowed us to check-in early when we arrived to drop off our bags until check-in time. Everyone was very friendly and helpful when we had questions. I loved that they had a cafe on site and quite a few places where we could go and relax if we didn't want to be in our room. Very close to the max light rail as well. Definitely recommend.

This place was really clean and had a couple free amenities that you normally have to pay for at hostels. Definitely coming back when I’m in town!

This is a great hostel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I stayed in the 4-bed female dorm, and I had my own outlet to plug my phone in at night, as well as a little cubby at the head of the bed to place small personal items. The room also had a large locker for each bed, and they let you check out padlocks for free. The bathrooms can be locked so you can have some private bathroom time (no locker room-type showering), and they were kept clean. It's in a lovely neighborhood as well.

One of the tough things in my stay there was finding a good place to eat around 7 pm, some nearby restaurants were too fancy or closed as well as the food carts but the best part was that the hostel had a bar/restaurant on the bottom floor and had wonderful burgers and drinks, along with terrific atmosphere.

Overall, a great stay. Really tasty, locally-sourced free breakfast items in the cafe and located in a cool neighbourhood with plenty of cafes and restaurants. Close to a Trader Joe's, which is handy. Well-equipped kitchen and lots of areas to relax. Good lockers and spacious rooms, often not enough bathrooms on each floor though at peak times. The mattress was slightly uncomfortable but it was probably just a bit old. I would definitely stay here again!
