Property Description

Vintage character, retro cool, and modern amenities – HI –San Francisco City Center’s got it all. The City Center hostel started life in the 1920s as a boutique hotel, and while period details like a marble-tiled lobby and mahogany-railed mezzanine still remain, it’s the 21st century amenities our guests love most. Connect to fast, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, grab evening drinks and free morning breakfast at our speak-easy-chic café, and enjoy private bathrooms in every room (yes, even dorms!).

The City Center hostel is off the beaten tourist path but still close to it all. Located between the edgy Tenderloin District and the clean marble columns of the city’s Civic Center and Arts Districts, our neighborhood is a hub for some of the city’s best cheap cuisine, as well as great nightclubs and live music venues. We’re just 7 blocks from the Civic Center BART station, making it easy for our guests to get all over the city, as well as to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.

Best of all, whether you want to explore the city or chill at the hostel, our staff is here to help. We're always hosting movie nights, group dinners, and tons of other special events on site. I stayed in 4bed female dorm, it was really nice and clean. Beds had own power plugs, light and curtains for some privacy. Common areas were welcoming and breakfast was filling and delicious! We had our private bathroom cleaned every day, kitchen was neat too. Super cozy hostel to stay in! Except the location... I know it's close to everything, but it didn't feel safe to walk around even during the day. If you take Uber or taxi, you will be fine and will have a lovely stay in this hostel!

Cutest hostel!! The beds were so soft and the rooms were so clean. Each bed came with curtains you could close for a bit of privacy which was awesome, plus the rooms are really quiet. The location is prime! There are a lot of homeless hanging around but you get this everywhere in San Francisco so it’s something you have to deal with everywhere. Ivy’s bar was a nice place to come back to for a cheap drink and a chat with some other travellers! Would 100% come back!

Great, affordable place to stay in San Francisco. Staff was helpful and attentive. Went on a tour of Chinatown hosted by Anthony and had a great time! Would recommend.

Location is not the best on SF. Lots of homeless in the neighborhood which limits if you want to wander and get back to the hostel late night. Rooms were small and can get packed when everybody has their suitcases around but overall they’re clean. If you like those beds that are soft and “hug” you, you will love their bed.

The zone felt really dangerous because of the several homeless and drug dealers around. I dont recommend to go out of the hostel after 7 p.m. Breakfast was simple but enough. For $1 you could add a portion oficina pancakes or eggs. The room was nice, the bathroom was a bit tiny.

Decent location and good atmosphere. The decorations in the common spaces were cool. My only complaint was the beds were so soft.

Hostel was really nice. Only note: location was extremely bad, mostly for a girl. The neighborhood is not nice even for a walk during the day.

The location was far out of the way for most of the activites. No parking available for guests unless you pay to park at the hotel next door. Biggest issue was the staff working to front counter. The snail pace to check people in was ridiculous. It takes normally at other Hi hostels and every hotel I've ever been in 5 mins to check someone in not 20-30 mins. There needs to be a better system in place to speed this up. The washroom in the room was also dirty with hair all over the tub.

The hostel is not in a safe area. There are too many homeless people and drug addicts in the streets and around the hostel. Worse than that when I checked in, they put me in a room with a 75-year-old man who is sh**ing in a bucket on the floor and the room smells like a sh**t. I asked to change the room but the receptionist was not understanding. I had to upgrade to private room. I wasn’t able to sleep because of people screaming all the night and homeless people fighting around the place.
