Property Description

Vintage character, retro cool, and modern amenities – HI –San Francisco City Center’s got it all. The City Center hostel started life in the 1920s as a boutique hotel, and while period details like a marble-tiled lobby and mahogany-railed mezzanine still remain, it’s the 21st century amenities our guests love most. Connect to fast, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, grab evening drinks and free morning breakfast at our speak-easy-chic café, and enjoy private bathrooms in every room (yes, even dorms!).

The City Center hostel is off the beaten tourist path but still close to it all. Located between the edgy Tenderloin District and the clean marble columns of the city’s Civic Center and Arts Districts, our neighborhood is a hub for some of the city’s best cheap cuisine, as well as great nightclubs and live music venues. We’re just 7 blocks from the Civic Center BART station, making it easy for our guests to get all over the city, as well as to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.

Best of all, whether you want to explore the city or chill at the hostel, our staff is here to help. We're always hosting movie nights, group dinners, and tons of other special events on site. We also organize free or cheap activities like pub crawls, walking tours, and museum days to help you experience everything our city has to offer.

On-site amenities include:
*Fast, free Wi-Fi
*Free breakfast
*Large, professional-grade guest kitchen
*Free linens and towels
*Daily housekeeping
*Discounted airport shuttle

Overview

Get a taste of retro chic at HI San Francisco - City Centre. We're set in what was a 1920s boutique hotel, and we've kept its historic features so our vibe is really unique. With period décor in our double rooms you'll feel like you've stepped back in time, while fast, free Wi-Fi and our professional-grade communal kitchen are definitely from the 21st century. The Jazz Age theme continues in our speakeasy-style café, where you can get to know the rest of our globe-trotting guests over a cappuccino or a round of beers.

Location

Just as our name claims, our hostel's right in the city centre, just a 10-minute walk from Market Street (the city's main shopping area). Our nearest BART station is Civic Center, also on Market Street. From here you can travel across the whole city or out to the airport (that takes about 40 minutes – give us a shout and we can set you up with discounted airport transfers). If you want to stick around our neighbourhood, you'll find plenty of places to eat on a budget or grab some last-minute tickets to a gig at The Regency Ballroom.

Rooms and Dorms

Choose from mixed or female-only dorms, or splash out on one of our fancy private rooms. They all have en-suite bathrooms (even the dorms) and everywhere's super-clean thanks to our daily housekeeping service. Free bed linen and towels are just another way we show you a Californian welcome and help make your backpack a little lighter.

Extras and activities

Though we're in a neighbourhood known for cheap eats, you can't beat the hearty – and free – breakfast we serve up in our café every morning. If you don't have plans for the rest of the day, join us for a walking tour around the city's best bits. We also organise regular pub crawls, group dinners and movie nights – ideal if you're in the market for new travel buddies.

I enjoyed my stay. Staff were friendly and helpful and accommodations were very comfortable (private ensuite room). Parking was in convenient valet lot nearby (cost extra). I would definitely stay there again.

Really a wonderful hostel, I wish I’d stayed more than 1 night! The building is a lovely historic one, decked out with nice fixtures and comfy couches in the common area. Staff were lovely, and the 4 person room was very spacious and convenient, with the included bathroom.

Loved the unique artwork by the staff, evident of a committed team to create a warm, homely and friendly experience and they had a bath!!!!. Area may be challenging for some, my experience with one homeless gentleman was very positive when he helped me to buy my BART ticket in a gentle humble manner, as I was unsure. I was not harassed by the local homeless, but caution may be necessary.

When inside the hostel, I felt very safe. It was clean and has a great layout in the common areas. The location has its good and bad qualities. It was only 2 blocks away from a concert venue that was the purpose for my trip. You’re in the middle of city and within easy access to many destinations. The downside is the environment surrounding the location. There are many homeless people drugged out and sleeping on the sidewalks nearby but I was aware of this when I booked my stay.

We enjoyed our stay at this hostel, but we were a little creeped out by the neighborhood. We were warned by our Uber driver on our way to the hostel. Once checked in, we felt safe being in the hostel, the staff was nice, we had everything we needed. Thank you!

    Fabulous

Decent hostel EXCEPT for one major complaint, they let transients stay here. I have had to request to change rooms the last two times I stayed there because of transients in room that smelled so bad. And it's obvious they were transients...no luggage etc. When I asked why they let them stay there the staff said as long as they have a credit card and ID they have to let them stay there...otherwise considered discrimination!

    Fabulous

The hostel was FANTASTIC, honestly one of the coolest I’ve stayed at ever, but the location was super sketchy with a homeless encampment right next door and people shooting up heroin all over the place. Parking was a nightmare, I circled for over an hour and ended up having to park on the side of the street that I guess was due for cleaning and got a $90 ticket. I ended up parking in the hotel lot next door for $30 the second night.

This is a solid hostel. Stayed in early March 2020 and had no issues. Staff were great, rooms and facilities were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was good. Neighbourhood is a little seedy but also has lots of character. Great location and close to a lot of neat places/iconic San Francisco areas. Definitely recommend.
