Property Description

Vintage character, retro cool, and modern amenities – HI –San Francisco City Center’s got it all. The City Center hostel started life in the 1920s as a boutique hotel, and while period details like a marble-tiled lobby and mahogany-railed mezzanine still remain, it’s the 21st century amenities our guests love most. Connect to fast, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, grab evening drinks and free morning breakfast at our speak-easy-chic café, and enjoy private bathrooms in every room (yes, even dorms!).

The City Center hostel is off the beaten tourist path but still close to it all. Located between the edgy Tenderloin District and the clean marble columns of the city’s Civic Center and Arts Districts, our neighborhood is a hub for some of the city’s best cheap cuisine, as well as great nightclubs and live music venues. We’re just 7 blocks from the Civic Center BART station, making it easy for our guests to get all over the city, as well as to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.

Best of all, whether you want to explore the city or chill at the hostel, our staff is here to help. We're always hosting movie nights, group dinners, and tons of other special events on site. We also organize free or cheap activities like pub crawls, walking tours, and museum days to help you experience everything our city has to offer.

On-site amenities include:
*Fast, free Wi-Fi
*Free breakfast
*Large, professional-grade guest kitchen
*Free linens and towels
*Daily housekeeping
*Discounted airport shuttle

The Hostel has all the services. The local is clean and comfortable. Only you should know that you will found homeless all around in this area. I think because they received free food from some organization in the zone. Well, homeless is part of the San Francisco, you know.

I was surprised how beautiful decorated this place is! When I checked in, Michael, if I didn’t remember wrong, helped me with everything. He was very efficient and polite. As he checked me in, he was telling other parties who came checked out that he would take care of them ASAP. Breakfast was included. Breakfast area was a little busy and crowded but I did chat with some friendly travelers from other countries. Outside, there were many homeless on that street. Check out was easy!

    Fabulous

Easy to find, though the area is quite rough - Hyde street is really disgusting so I recommend coming from Van Ness. It was nice to have a bathroom in the room, though it was incredibly small and very difficult to move around - I had to change in the shower, which was not ideal. Free breakfast was nice - standard bagels and coffee and orange juice. Staff seemed a bit disinterested though, and more interested in their own conversations.

    Fabulous

Generally good. But the neighbourhood was quite sketchy. Personally I think this is a bit worse than in NYC. I felt safe when I’m in hostel though. By the way the lobby is cool but if you sleep early or enjoy some relaxed vibe before midnight then it could be quite distracting due to the cool music. Or just do some yoga with that.

The location was a little uncomfortable to walk in if alone, but the security of the building was great. Breakfast was amazing and the hostel had a great set up. Location was central to a lot of stuff in the city.

    Very Good

Location is not the best on SF. Lots of homeless in the neighborhood which limits if you want to wander and get back to the hostel late night. Rooms were small and can get packed when everybody has their suitcases around but overall they’re clean. If you like those beds that are soft and “hug” you, you will love their bed.

    Very Good

The room was good, but prior warning about which streets to avoid walking down would have been appreciated. Jarring to walk through a lot of open drug use/violence etc. at the beginning and end of each day on holiday.

The location was far out of the way for most of the activites. No parking available for guests unless you pay to park at the hotel next door. Biggest issue was the staff working to front counter. The snail pace to check people in was ridiculous. It takes normally at other Hi hostels and every hotel I've ever been in 5 mins to check someone in not 20-30 mins. There needs to be a better system in place to speed this up. The washroom in the room was also dirty with hair all over the tub.
