Property Description

The Hamakua House is a rustic guest house located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Make your next getaway greener by staying in this off-the-grid house. Our house is 'off-the-grid' which means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Hamakua Coast (Hawaii's 'green' side of the island) is the perfect place for an adventure vacation.

Easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. Located about 9 miles (13 minutes drive) North of Hilo (Hawaii's second largest city), the Hamakua House is remote and peaceful, while still being a short drive to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and galleries.

We offer a series of private (double occupancy) rooms with shared baths great for couples, individuals, or families. Shared bathroom with shower and tub. Access: our full kitchen, the common room (with a Netflix TV), our common dining room, our washing machine (hang dry clothes), and free WiFi.

We also offer hammock camping cabanas (both private or dormitory). Many travellers prefer this 'glamping' option.

I had an amazing stay and made some amazing friends and unforgettable memories. Falling asleep in a hammock every night to the sounds of the rainforest, you can't beat that. Will definitely recommend to everyone and maybe one day I'll get to stay here again :)

I absolutely loved this hostel! I ended up extending my stay. The location is wonderful - even though you’re minutes from town it feels like you’re sleeping out in the jungle. The guest house is very nice and the full kitchen is clean and stocked. As an added bonus there’s a very cuddly cat roaming the grounds.

Hamakua was a great place to stay! We stayed in one of the rooms inside the house, so can't comment on the cabanas. The room was lovely and the bed was large & comfortable. The house can be a little noisy, but management go to great lengths to let everyone know to stay quiet. They have all bases covered with helpful notes around the place, making it really clear what to do. They have free WIFI too.

Amazing awesome! Dani the manager-was so considerate and on point with everything! I absolutely loved the accommodation, it was posh rustic camping meet jungle. I had a cabana and hammock, which was really up my alley, and the outdoor shower in the main house was one of my favorites... other than Dani!

This place will blow you away. It's easily the most beautiful location for a hostel I've ever seen - in the middle of the gorgeous Hamakua Coast, and the outdoor cabanas (had mine to myself), outdoor shower overlooking the coast, and comfy hammocks made this super memorable. Make sure to check out the waterfall on property. Only drawback is that I had to call to get check in instructions emailed to me, and it wasn't clear there was staff on site, so be sure you have access to email/phone day of.

We had a loooooong day hiking/exploring Narnia and didn't get in until well after 10pm and then left around 7 am so our stay was short and sweet. The property had a beautiful layout and clever little netted bungalows with two hammocks each (actually slept quite well!!) The shared space was semi indoor/outdoor and clean/friendly. Morning view over the ocean was epic!! For big island this was a great deal and unforgettable experience :)

This was absolutely the cutest hostel and accommodations! My party and I were only able to stay on the island one day, and I chose this option because I loved the eco-friendliness and open air options. We stayed in one of the cabanas with hammocks which was great. If you’re a light sleeper considering ear plugs because the frogs get loud, but that was something I enjoyed and gives you a closer experience with nature. 10/10 would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay here in the future.

Enjoyed my stay. Really cool place to relax. I loved the rain at night and the hammocks were interesting! Not the most comfortable but they never are so it was as expected. Had lots of fun! Thank you
