Property Description

The Hamakua House is a rustic guest house located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Make your next getaway greener by staying in this off-the-grid house. Our house is 'off-the-grid' which means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Hamakua Coast (Hawaii's 'green' side of the island) is the perfect place for an adventure vacation.

Easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. Located about 9 miles (13 minutes drive) North of Hilo (Hawaii's second largest city), the Hamakua House is remote and peaceful, while still being a short drive to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and galleries.

We offer a series of private (double occupancy) rooms with shared baths great for couples, individuals, or families. Shared bathroom with shower and tub. Access: our full kitchen, the common room (with a Netflix TV), our common dining room, our washing machine (hang dry clothes), and free WiFi.

We also offer hammock camping cabanas (both private or dormitory). Many travellers prefer this 'glamping' option.

I absolutely loved this hostel! I ended up extending my stay. The location is wonderful - even though you’re minutes from town it feels like you’re sleeping out in the jungle. The guest house is very nice and the full kitchen is clean and stocked. As an added bonus there’s a very cuddly cat roaming the grounds.

Hamakua was a great place to stay! We stayed in one of the rooms inside the house, so can't comment on the cabanas. The room was lovely and the bed was large & comfortable. The house can be a little noisy, but management go to great lengths to let everyone know to stay quiet. They have all bases covered with helpful notes around the place, making it really clear what to do. They have free WIFI too.

Amazing awesome! Dani the manager-was so considerate and on point with everything! I absolutely loved the accommodation, it was posh rustic camping meet jungle. I had a cabana and hammock, which was really up my alley, and the outdoor shower in the main house was one of my favorites... other than Dani!

Camping cabanas were great; fun to sleep in a hammock once in a while. Outdoor eating area has geckos and some bugs around sun rise/set, but the cabana was completely free of insects and wildlife. Nice nature-y area to just hang out, but the road up is a pain, so make sure your car has good clearance.

Enjoyed my stay. Really cool place to relax. I loved the rain at night and the hammocks were interesting! Not the most comfortable but they never are so it was as expected. Had lots of fun! Thank you

The location is pretty remote so if your looking to get away from tourists, this is the place to go. It was kinda cool sleeping in the jungle outside, but really noisy with all the wildlife and rain. It's not easy to sleep in a hammock if your not used to it. Overall it was a cool experience for one or two nights, but I probably wouldn't stay there again in a cabana.

    Very Good

The camping cabanas are great! Super comfy and a bit different to the usual hostel stay. The main house seemed nice too but if you’re thinking of staying here, definitely do the camping! The area is OK, not a lot going on and I wasn’t impressed with Hilo itself but we went to a few cool places nearby which was great Definitely need a hire car. We didn’t have a 4x4 and it was fine but I think we’d have felt a bit more comfortable with a 4x4 just because the roads were a little bumpy
