Property Description

The Hamakua House is a rustic guest house located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Make your next getaway greener by staying in this off-the-grid house. Our house is 'off-the-grid' which means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Hamakua Coast (Hawaii's 'green' side of the island) is the perfect place for an adventure vacation.

Easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. Located about 9 miles (13 minutes drive) North of Hilo (Hawaii's second largest city), the Hamakua House is remote and peaceful, while still being a short drive to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and galleries.

We offer a series of private (double occupancy) rooms with shared baths great for couples, individuals, or families. Shared bathroom with shower and tub. Access: our full kitchen, the common room (with a Netflix TV), our common dining room, our washing machine (hang dry clothes), and free WiFi. View House Rules

Finding the property was much easier than expected, even in the dark of night. Great location, less than 10 minutes from Akaka Falls. The property is gorgeous and our stay was quiet and relaxing. Hamakua also downplays the amenities they offer to make your stay carefree and easy.

Great place, great vibes, awesome waterfall on location that’s great to swim in. Would help to have a car but not absolutely essential.

The most amazing stay I’ve had. The place is absolutely beautiful, the owners are so friendly and helpful if you need anything, and the cabanas were awesome to stay in. It’s super close to a great town, the Akaka falls, and Hilo, and I got great recommendations from the owners on where to go see. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Only occurance but non-issue was that I didn’t really check-in or check-out anywhere, not a problem at all but was a bit confused arriving.

Great hostel in Hawaii! Definitely need a car as it's north of Hilo by about 20 minutes but it's a gorgeous setting and very cozy hostel. We stayed in the house which was comfortable and we even got breakfast coupons at a shop in the next town which was a nice surprise! We would LOVE to stay here again.

This place was really cool! You have to drive through some THICK rainforest, which was the coolest part. (I did it in a car, so very easy to get there) the swimming spot was really nice too. The hammocks are comfortable and there’s plenty of blankets. They had coffee and tea for everyone, and plenty of space in the kitchen to work, plus an outside part. The cabanas don’t lock, which kinda sucked, but it was fine. I didn’t interact with the staff at all so I’m not sure about the customer service.

The location is beautiful but really in the middle of nowhere.. There is no supermarket or anything close by. Everything is far. Also I didn't feel safe as a girl at night because there is no lock on the door of the cabins. So anyone can come in at night. They where not friendly or thoughtful by email. Also when there is a problem. They are NOT reachable or thoughtful. Strange, because you also pay for the service when you stay somewhere.
