Property Description

De Helleborus is a gentle gem on the outskirts of Groningen, located in the village of Engelbert. As an eco-hostel and permaculture centre, we are passionate about sustainability, green living and a connection with nature. Our food forest bursts with different colours, changing with the seasons, while cats and chickens roam freely among the trees. In winter, we offer beds in our shared dorm room inside the house, while in summer you can stay in a ready made tent, caravan or yurt, peacefully nestled in the forest! We have a few lovely spaces to sit by a campfire and play your guitar, as well as a wood fired hot tub, bicycle rentals and a beautiful outside kitchen in the forest. Don’t forget to do your grocery shopping in Groningen though- while we offer a delicious breakfast, we do not currently serve lunch or dinner, and there are no Grocery stores within Engelbert.

Fantastic hostel! A bit tricky to get to from the city center, but well worth it. Loved the animals and the garden was beautiful, breakfast was fantastic, and the staff were helpful and fun to talk with

    Superb

Loved my stay here. The garden area is amazing and the whole hostel space is beautiful. The volunteers were kind and welcoming which made it easy to socialize with others. Outdoor spaces are 10/10. Location is 35 minutes by city bus to Groningen, but the neighbourhood is beautiful. Beds are very comfy and well designed and kitchen is amazing. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something further from the busy city. Doors seemed to always be left open but I never felt unsafe.

    Fabulous

A little far out of the main city, however bus stations are right nearby that take you directly into the heart of the city. Staff were polite, helpful and super charming. It was a quiet place, no bar, but still had areas where people could talk (and pet some adorable cats). Very clean, comfortable beds and also well-kept, decorative bathroom facilities. Definitely worth the value. If you’re looking for a genuine, non-touristy feel, this is the perfect location for you. (Bike rental was great).

Loved staying here. They have a workaway programme with volunteers and I was very lucky to be shown around the permaculture garden by one of the volunteers. They were super nice people and a great atmosphere. They have pigs, a chicken coop and compost toilets. Everything is super cool and the garden was my favourite part. Will be coming back for sure!

    Good

It's located far away from the city. Due to that, I was charged a late arrival fee of €7.50. I shared room with four girls and an old guy. It was a horrible night: the old guy kept making noise and the four girls returned around 5AM, drunk. They made too much noise and I had a horrible sleep in the end. I hated it! The bed was at the corner of the room. It was cold and humid. The staff and volunteer were really nice. I enjoyed the explanation and accompany. The breakfast was the best part.
