Property Description

Hootananny is a lively hostel with spacious rooms in a traditional Edwardian public house dating back to the early 1850s. We offer large, airy, comfortable rooms and have a great reputation for a warm atmosphere and helpful staff. We're located in the heart of Brixton with excellent transport links - a great location to stay and explore the city of London.

With just a ten-minute walk to Brixton underground station, you are straight into Central London on the tube in less than 15 minutes. As one of London’s most diverse and vibrant areas, Brixton has world famous covered and street markets, is a hub for music venues, is full of atmospheric pubs and has the pick of the world’s best cuisine with a great selection of restaurants. Hootananny is located right next to two bus stops with 24-hour connections to the city centre.

Hostellers are treated to a 20% discount on drinks at the award-winning bar downstairs that was recently crowned Best Live Music venue in London. Festival headliner Manu Chao chose Hootananny bar to give a secret show after his festival performance, and Hootananny star gigs include big gypsy bands, hip hop, dubstep, afrobeat, live reggae acts from Jamaica, ska, world music and indie rock. Fridays during winter also feature live comedy, and entrance is free before 10pm.

I enjoyed my stay. The atmosphere was nice and the people also staying at the hostel were friendly too. It's nothing too fancy, but it is nice and simple and has everything you need. Can't argue with the price either!

We came to this hostel jet lagged and confused after a 24 hour flight from Australia to be treated like absolute family by not only the staff but the other beautiful people staying here! I woke up a 3am and was given a big bowl of pasta, given the best advice on where to go by Thommo 🖤 who went out of his way to make sure we were having fun! Thank you thank you thank you for kicking off our trip on such a happy note! We will be baaaack!

Great staff, lovely atmosphere. Amazing value for money, especially if you're looking to stay in Brixton for a short while! Showers were nice and hot, fully-equipped kitchen with oven and pantry / fridge for longer stays. Very clean. Close to multiple supermarkets. Only downside is that it is located above the bar which plays music until quite late. Free earplugs are provided upon request but they are useless - you must bring your own if you have any intention of sleeping before midnight

    Very Good

I booked a 1 night stay here for me and my friends for a gig at Brixton o2. It was about a 10 minute walk to the gig and the area is really cool and trendy. The hostel is very basic but for £16 a night you get what you pay for. I don’t know if I’d stay here more than 2/3 days BUT the staff are really nice people very chilled, there’s a bar at the entrance good music, you get discount on drinks when you show them your key to the hostel so overall I thought it was a good stay.

Overall a good place to stay for a night, hostel staff is very nice. Young female solo travelers I would suggest a different hostel as I found it a little overwhelming staying in a dorm as one of two women with men who were 30+ and seemed to be staying there for extended periods of time, additionally upon my arrival a group of drunk men outside the bar gave us "advice" on how to get in the hostel that went directly against the directions stated on the door and accosted us when we rang the bell.

The hostel dorm was very smelly, and the hostel wasnt very clean. Soon as I woke up wanted to get out of there. Not somewhere where you want to sit and chill, maybe different on the weekend. Some nice guests but no one appeared to be travelling, most guests I spoke to were between homes in London. Stayed for two nights but I couldn't of stayed any longer. I wouldn't recommend staying here, but the bar downstairs is alright. Plus side is good location in Brixton and staff were nice enough.

The beds make to much noise so the slightless move cause the bars to screech. While in my stay the female shower bathrooms had leeks, so they destroyed 2 showers, leaving only one. The bathrooms had big spiders on the roofs and not that clean. There was a guy from the staff that seemed so unwelcoming for having us but the rest was really nice

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the smell. I'm not a picky person but this was hard to deal with. It's like it had seeped into the building itself and just wasn't going to ever leave. Then I was taken upstairs to the office for check-in. I had to wait about half an hour before it was convenient for them to get me checked in. When I asked if it was safe for me to leave belongings in the room the response I got was, "Oh yes, it's relatively safe...well...maybe for clothes?"
