Native art-style paintings, sculptured walls and mosaics set the scene here at Hostal Rural. We're a magical place with hammocks and an outdoor terrace, plus a 'chill cave' for escaping the every day. Ask fellow travellers at our on-site bar about their favourite things to do in Chile (though they might just say it's staying here!). Every morning, grab breakfast for free or use our kitchen to fix yourself a custom snack. There's a BBQ too, and we do al-fresco grilling some evenings.

We're in a handy location just a block away from Caracoles, the main street in bohemian San Pedro de Atacama. Take a wander and choose from the many cafés for a frothy pisco sour. To get to us from El Loa Airport, make your way downtown to the Calama bus terminal (20 minutes by taxi). From here, the bus to San Pedro de Atacama takes about 90 minutes, then it's a 6-minute walk to Caracoles and a short stroll to the hostel. Follow Caracoles until the intersection with Calama, take a left and we're on the left-hand side.

Rooms and Dorms

Free linen and Wi-Fi help you save money for a tour out to Moon Valley. Our mixed dorms are super cosy, and you can store your valuables in small security lockers in the downstairs courtyard. We have great hot showers and there are towels for hire – handy after a day of desert trekking!

Extras and activities

Our staff can arrange trips to the Salar de Uyuni – the world's largest salt flat – as well as local tours. We can only accept cash (pesos chilenos), so do remember to exchange your money in town. We'll give you a free city map to help you find your way to the bank, as well as to other more interesting sites! We've also got a book exchange (great for those hammocks we mentioned) and cable TV for catching up with the outside world.

Lady at the reception loaned me cash so I could pay the other half of my tour. I was frantically running around town trying to get hold of cash but had no luck (Revolut card giving me problems). Really appreciated it.

Absolutely loved staying at Hostal Rural. It’s in the best location, (right off the main road) and it is well taken care of. The place over all is decorated with tons of artistic details and the staff is super friendly. Alejandra and David are the best when it comes to recommendations! Really glad I stayed here on my visit to Atacama, met lots of amazing people and had the best time exploring the area. Thank you Hostel Rural!

Was recommended this hostel by another traveller and wasn’t disappointed! Really nice and chilled, lots of friendly sociable people and super easy to meet people without it being overly “party hostel vibe”. Only downside is that it’s quite pricey but was overall worth it because of the people we met and experiences we had!

Great hostel with a true backpacker feel located right in the centre of town. Perfect for solo travellers. The hostel seems to have many rules. Keep in mind that the bar is expensive and outside alcohol is not allowed.

Great hostel. Staff were so friendly and really helpful when booking tours. In a good location, close to restaurants and mini markets. They do burger nights and BBQ nights, so this was a great way to meet people.

Nice hostel that’s pretty social. The tours they run are good value and it’s nice that you get grouped with other people from the hostel. Reception staff are really friendly and helpful! There’s a rule that you have to put all your stuff in the lockers, and while I get they do it because the rooms are small, it’s really annoying. The lockers are quite small so it’s a pain to jam your bag in and out, and you don’t have a space to place your valuables separate to your main bag in the locker.

We really enjoyed our stay here in a nice and chilled atmosphere but the staff were a bit unhelpful at times. Overall our stay was good and we’d definitely come back and recommend

I stayed at this hostel because it had a lot of reviews and all very positive. Upon arrival, staff were very awkward and I had to pay for all nights in advance (in my previous hostels throughly South America you could pay for the first night or at the end of your stay). They said the hostel was full but it felt very empty, no vibe at all and were very strict with rules. I’m all for rules but it was to the point that I felt like I was being watched. Overall would not recommend
