Property Description

KEX. It's the Icelandic word for 'biscuit' and new social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love?

Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late-night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions.

Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features, including a café and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room and free Wi-Fi.

In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms.
The Double Plus has one double bed, a private bathroom, linens and towels and a fantastic seaside view.
The Double Standard has one double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels and - if you are lucky - the same fantastic view.
The Twin Private has two single beds, linens and towels and a better-than-average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed.

Ladies - for your comfort and peace-of-mind, we offer female-only dorms. If you would prefer to reserve a bed in such a dorm, please make sure to do so directly from the reservation window. If none are available, you are welcome to contact us after booking to double-check.

Families - a few of our four-bed dorms are equipped with bunk beds which can be pushed together to form what we like to call a double bunk bed. This has Mom and Dad on the bottom and kids on top. Baby cribs are also available to families traveling with a diaper bag. Please be sure to contact us after booking in order to arrange for this type of room. Space is limited, and family rooms are reserved on a first-come basis.

Children under the age of 3 stay for free and children under 12 pay 50%. The same is true for many of the excursions which can be booked directly from the hostel reception.

Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 200 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting new travel buddies from exotic places.

Our hostel just oozes personality and soul, just like our guests. Every piece of décor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, the design is an organic concept blending Iceland’s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel.

With the affordable nightly rates, you’ll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hákarl‎ and brennivín.

We’re located in the centre of Reykjavik with a view across the bay to Mt. Esja. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. We’re within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions and other points of interest in the city centre. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city’s public bus system.

Please note that children under 16 cannot stay in shared dorms. Children over 16 years of age can stay in shared dorms when travelling with a guardian. View House Rules

KEX Hostel is your perfect travel base in Reykjavik. You'll get a dose of Iceland’s past with a modern twist: this biscuit factory-turned-hostel is crammed with Instagram-worthy social areas. Think salvaged materials like vintage artwork, a floor-to-ceiling library and a heated outdoor patio area – all in an edgy, industrial-style setting. Grab a warming coffee or a locally-made Viking beer in our open-plan café/bar, or hire a bicycle from us and get exploring.

You’ll find us in the centre of Reykjavik in a buzzing area packed with cafés, bars and music venues. Browse handmade items in the boutiques, learn about Iceland's history in one of the museums or relax in a geothermal swimming pool. Any art lovers out there? The National Gallery of Iceland is just a 20 minute walk away. With the main bus station, Hlemmur, a two minute walk from us, it's also easy to get to sights like the famous Blue Lagoon. If you're arriving from Keflavík International Airport, hop on the airport express or Flybus. They'll bring you to us via the terminal in central Reykjavík.

Rooms and Dorms

Whether you book one of our private rooms – like our Double Plus, which comes with a sea view and a private bathroom – or choose a mixed or female-only dorm, you'll find airy spaces with unique décor and original wall art. There are large, backpack-sized storage lockers to keep your belongings safe and organised, and fresh bed linen is included too (we love to take care of our guests!).

Extras and activities

Grab dinner at our on-site gastropub, which serves classic Icelandic dishes like fried ling fish and classics like hearty hamburgers and tacos. We've got free Wi-Fi for planning those action-packed days, as well as free city maps. On a budget? Cook up your own feast in one of our two shared kitchens. Our comfy common room, board games and regular movie nights make it easy to bond with your fellow travellers.

We loved it. Stayed our first night here since its about 50 minutes away from the airport. You can easily walk to all of the cool stuff in the city (nightlife, food, coffee shops, and sites). There is bar in the hostel with a happy hour! You can buy their breakfast buffet (cheaper if you buy a head of time). The decor is amazing. The heating is great! Tons of area in the common room/front desk area. Would totally stay here again!

I stayed in a mixed dorm on the Christmas day and New year's Eve. Both times the hostel felt safe, had a friendly vibe and a youth atmosphere. I liked my stay and would recommend the hostel.

Great hostel along the water front decorated in a charming old way. I stayed in the 6 and 16 bed dorm rooms while there. Both were restful. Breakfast is 1790kr if bought the night before, otherwise 1990kr the day of. There are private shower and toilet blocks and also communal ones which are ‘very’ communal. Separated into genders of course. A close walk to the rest of Reykjavík, sightseeing, shops, museums, food etc

The hostel was very nice, super cute and hipster. Feels more like a hotel than hostel. Had a nice lounge and bar area to relax in. Stayed in a private room, very clean, nice big bed. Shared bathrooms, I felt there was alot of facilities, shower closets, just toilets and a common area for men only and private area for women only with toilets, sinks, mirrors and hair dryer. Kitchen was a little smaller compared to other hostels, but still had the basics and a large refrigerator.

KEX is an attractive, cool and comfortable hostel with an exceptional amount of showers and a well equipped kitchen on each floor. The bar is sociable and there are plenty of nooks and crannies to sit and chill. The location is 10 minutes walk from the shopping area. Staff were informative and mostly friendly. Our room felt a little small for 6 people, and each bed would benefit from its own reading light, a small shelf and more plug sockets. The hostel is very clean.

The bar/reception area is chic, rooms much more basic. My dorm overlooked a construction site on which very loud work commenced 7am in the mornings. Plenty of individual, well-maintained bathrooms and a good kitchen. The member of staff who checked me in was great and very accommodating of requests, others much slower and overall more distant than friendly. Location near the waterfront offers good views but on windy days is very exposed! And a bit far from main downtown area. Not much atmosphere

This is less of a hostel and more of hotel with shared rooms. The linens are an added cost, the bar is hardly affordable (11pm close) and the hostel’s idea of “social environment” are some card games available. While it’s a neat setup throughout — kitchens on each floor and plenty of bathroom spaces (both shared and private) — the rooms are crammed with as many beds that can fit, the staff is uninterested and it’s less of a social hostel and more where the party goes to die.

Unfortunately didn’t get to stay here. Got stuck way out east and tried to call and cancel the bed. The lady on the phone was probably the most unhelpful and least understanding person I encountered. I still got charged for the room and a deposit. Do Not Recommend!
