Property Description

KEX. It's the Icelandic word for 'biscuit' and new social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love?

Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late-night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions.

Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features, including a café and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room and free Wi-Fi.

In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms.
The Double Plus has one double bed, a private bathroom, linens and towels and a fantastic seaside view.
The Double Standard has one double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels and - if you are lucky - the same fantastic view.
The Twin Private has two single beds, linens and towels and a better-than-average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed.

Ladies - for your comfort and peace-of-mind, we offer female-only dorms. If you would prefer to reserve a bed in such a dorm, please make sure to do so directly from the reservation window. If none are available, you are welcome to contact us after booking to double-check.

Families - a few of our four-bed dorms are equipped with bunk beds which can be pushed together to form what we like to call a double bunk bed. This has Mom and Dad on the bottom and kids on top. Baby cribs are also available to families traveling with a diaper bag. Please be sure to contact us after booking in order to arrange for this type of room. Space is limited, and family rooms are reserved on a first-come basis.

Children under the age of 3 stay for free and children under 12 pay 50%. The same is true for many of the excursions which can be booked directly from the hostel reception.

Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 200 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting new travel buddies from exotic places.

Our hostel just oozes personality and soul, just like our guests. Every piece of décor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, the design is an organic concept blending Iceland’s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel.

With the affordable nightly rates, you’ll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hákarl‎ and brennivín.

We’re located in the centre of Reykjavik with a view across the bay to Mt. Esja. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. We’re within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions and other points of interest in the city centre. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city’s public bus system.

Please note that children under 16 cannot stay in shared dorms. Children over 16 years of age can stay in shared dorms when travelling with a guardian. View House Rules

Overview

KEX Hostel is your perfect travel base in Reykjavik. You'll get a dose of Iceland’s past with a modern twist: this biscuit factory-turned-hostel is crammed with Instagram-worthy social areas. Think salvaged materials like vintage artwork, a floor-to-ceiling library and a heated outdoor patio area – all in an edgy, industrial-style setting. Grab a warming coffee or a locally-made Viking beer in our open-plan café/bar, or hire a bicycle from us and get exploring.

Location

You’ll find us in the centre of Reykjavik in a buzzing area packed with cafés, bars and music venues. Browse handmade items in the boutiques, learn about Iceland's history in one of the museums or relax in a geothermal swimming pool. Any art lovers out there? The National Gallery of Iceland is just a 20 minute walk away. With the main bus station, Hlemmur, a two minute walk from us, it's also easy to get to sights like the famous Blue Lagoon. If you're arriving from Keflavík International Airport, hop on the airport express or Flybus. They'll bring you to us via the terminal in central Reykjavík.

Rooms and Dorms

Whether you book one of our private rooms – like our Double Plus, which comes with a sea view and a private bathroom – or choose a mixed or female-only dorm, you'll find airy spaces with unique décor and original wall art. There are large, backpack-sized storage lockers to keep your belongings safe and organised, and fresh bed linen is included too (we love to take care of our guests!).

Extras and activities

Grab dinner at our on-site gastropub, which serves classic Icelandic dishes like fried ling fish and classics like hearty hamburgers and tacos. We've got free Wi-Fi for planning those action-packed days, as well as free city maps. On a budget? Cook up your own feast in one of our two shared kitchens. Our comfy common room, board games and regular movie nights make it easy to bond with your fellow travellers.

We had a great stay. We stayed in a 6 bed room. Everyone was very friendly and respectful in the hostel, both staff and guests! Breakfast was tasty, linens were clean, and location was nice for walking around. Just tough to get to from the airport!

Staff were friendly and helpful. There are a lot of communal areas throughout the hostel. Plenty of showers and toilets on each floor. The room I stayed in had no air movement aside from a small window so it smelled really bad the entire time, especially at night when more people were in the room.

Very cool looking hostel only a short walk to the Centre of the old Town. Rooms are well decorated and showers great, wifi was strong and beds comfy. There were No plugs by the bed which is a bummer and the door to room was loud. Kitchen is fairly basic possibly to incentivise you to use their restaurant. Overall great affordable stay and recommend.

Booked room with two twin beds. View out window of Esja mountain, Reykjavík harbor, and sun voyager sculpture. Loved vibe of converted Kex cookie factory. Staff very helpful and ability to lock up excess gear on site facilitated our Laugavegur backpacking trip. The only drawback—it is expensive in high season. High grade hotel prices in most other cities. Kind of the issue with Iceland in general.

    Fabulous

Overall a great clean hostel with friendly staff and useful facilities. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and the price is very good considering how expensive things are. The view from the hostel is breathtaking! The cons- there is a building site literally next door so it’s tough to sleep from 8.30 am to 6 pm. They charge extra for linen which I then had to chase for twice Also workmen block open the entrances meaning anyone can walk in and around.

    Very Good

    10 Aug 2019
Place was worn and had a weary feel about it. Everything is old and looks like the public areas were furnished from a flea market. Strong smell of cooking hit me on arrival. But it is big and has a large turnaround, especially young adults. It could do with a facelift inside and out. Especially now it’s neighbour is going to be a swanky new Raddison Red Hotel. I can’t imagine Raddison wanting to have Alex as its immediate neighbour.
