Clean and easy. Awesome amenities as expected with SYHA, lovely staff and easy location. Very accommodating for early and late arrivals/departures since ferry commutes require such flexibility.

Great place! We stayed in two-bed dorms, which were nice and clean. Access to kitchen facilities and lounge during our stay. They also held our luggage and were accommodating with our use of the late-night ferry. Only complaint would be the lack of WiFi in the rooms (only available in kitchen and lounge).

Pretty good hostel by most measures. A little bit far from the city center, but manageable. Wifi does not work in the rooms, which is a bit antequated. Decent breakfast and nice staff. Would stay here again.

A fairly basic hostel by today’s standards and a bit tired - maybe a bit understaffed..? Located on the outskirts of town which meant it was nice and quiet and overall it met my needs.

This is the only hostel in Kirkwall so it’s a real shame that it’s so grim. The main dining area feels like a cafeteria with little to no character to speak of, and it’s extra frustrating that the WiFi doesn’t reach into the guest rooms. I don’t know why it’s called a “youth” hostel when it was mostly full of older people in their sixties. Definitely not the atmosphere that any other youth hostel has. The bathrooms are clean enough but have low water pressure.

The hostel is in serious need of a thorough refurbishment. The bathrooms are unkept and have mould and mildew smell issues. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment and was the best part of the hostel. The location is a bit of walk outside of the town centre, but only takes around 20 minutes. Onsite parking for cars and bikes available.

Hostel could really do with renovation. Looks like its had better days. No hot water for shower in morning occasionally. Soap dispensers in toilets empty. Could do with mop in shower and curtain between showers and wash room. And fixing the hole in the corridor floor would be good. Well equipped kitchen, with recycling facilities including food waste. They have storeroom for left luggage if you arrive before 10am as reception closed rest of day until 5. 15 min walk to town, easy to find.

The hostel is in dire need of upgrading. Highlighter green is an uncomfortable colour for the walls. The rooms were cold, impersonal and fairly clean. The shower curtain was old and smelled like cat urine. A bench or chair would have been nice to put your clothes while showing as well. The rooms lacked storage space, nowhere to hang wet clothes from the rain. The bed mattresses are needing replacing. I was most peeved about the daily charge of £3 charge for Hostelling International member
