Weirdly, I really ended up liking this hostel. Sure the rules and regulations are a bit strange at first, the curfew is a little hard to deal with and it doesn't have much atmosphere and perhaps feels like living in a commune. BUT it is super clean, onsen is a massive plus after sightseeing all day, staff are super helpful and there are perks like free bike rental for an hour (to cycle to the delicious ramen place down the hill). And in fact I met some nice travellers so it's what you make it!

This place seems to be more of a resort than a hostel. It's pretty upscale with public bath and all. You even give your key to the reception when you leave. This place has it all. There only major downside is that this place is quite far from Kyoto. Very few rails lead to the hostel and it's much more common to take the bus. Which are usually half an hour apart in pickup times. A very nice place, but I personally would sacrifice some comfort and luxuries just to be in a better location.

This is a really clean hostel with very nice facilities, BUT it is an extremely odd experience. There are tons of families with young children staying at this hostel. As a result, the atmosphere is very strange (kind of like being on a school field trip as a chaperone). That being said, the rooms are very nice and the location is really beautiful (basically the outer suburbs of Kyoto). I’d recommend this hostel to anyone as long as you’re not hoping for a very social atmosphere.
