Property Description

In 2011 a pirate and a mermaid fell in love and started La Ruka. Being travelers we understand what it can feel like to be constantly on the go and/or “homesick.” Our goal was to create a home, not just a hostel. We would like our guests to feel as if they are at home and feel free to relax, unwind, and just be themselves. With the help of our friends and family from around the world we have been graciously able to make this happen.

Located just on the edge of the town, La Ruka is a short stroll away onto a beautiful and vibrant jungle side property. It is just far enough way to hear the true sounds of the jungle at night, but close enough for a walk or bike ride to grab a bite to eat and listen to some live music. Walking into the reception you will be welcomed with a warm smile and positive vibes. If you arrive in the morning the person behind the desk will most likely be one of the owners, Dannie or Dave. And if not they, another fellow backpacker will guide you through the property to get your bearings and meet up with other travelers playing pool, sharing a community meal or enjoying good conversation over a little Caribbean green.

This was my third time staying at La Ruka hostel, this time in the Arenal Dorm. Wonderful atmosphere, nice hot showers, the cold water dispenser in the lobby, towel rentals for $1 and quick and easy bike rentals are really nice conveniences. A big aspect I love about La Ruka is I always seem to meet interesting, open-minded fellow travelers here from all over the world. Being able to just do a short bike ride or walk to Playa Cocles is great too.

La ruka was a very comfortable experience! It was easy to feel at home here and the staff were great with questions. Free coffee, kitchen to use, common areas, bikes for rent. Highly recommend!

Great hostel. Outdoor kitchen and big hang out area to socialize. WiFi is only available in reception area, but has plenty of couches and seating, plus a cool area to shop clothes and jewelry, etc. Ice cold drinking water was nice. Dorms were basic, clean. Short walk to town but lots of places to eat and drink and a mercado right next door. Bikes available for rent. Would stay again.

This was a really nice hostel - friendly, helpful staff, lots of dogs, nice garden area to chill in. I wouldn't describe it as a party hostel or super lively but it's a great place to chill and you feel safe and secure.

Very nice staff. Luis, one the them, is also a guide in the Jaguar rescue center and gave me a lot of recommendations of thing to do in Puerto Viejo. Not the most clean hostel I’ve stayed but it was ok. The main problem is that there is no sound isolation and the rooms are just a few meters away from the road.

This is the first hostel I’ve been to with two kitchens, one for staff and volunteers the other for guest. Guest kitchen has absolutely nothing to offer, I’d say all items guest leave behind, salt pepper oil, spices, paste, rice, sauces must all go to the staff kitchen. Disappointing also not sure what the volunteers were there for, there was no interaction with guest, so not a social hostel. Staff were friendly and hostel was ok. Dogs were the best thing there.

One of the more reasonably priced hostels in Puerto Viejo. It was nice enough, with good facilities and a solid location between the Playa Cocles and the main village. Not the cleanest hostel in the world but no major issues. Staff were lovely.

For the hostel itself it's good - comfy beds with nice touches like shelves and good ladders for on top, big showers (and hot with decent pressure) and clean. A lot of thought has gone into the construction but I was confused by all the reviews about friendly staff. They answered questions/gave coffee but very much kept to themselves in a group, I personally felt like I was invading their house. Not good but I doubt they care about a guest's opinion as they are there for their own good time.

Staff was very friendly, helpful, and were able to upgrade us to a private room. However, both the private and mixed dorm were very dirty. There was sand all over the floor in both rooms. It came out to about $12 a night in the mixed dorm and I feel this is way to expensive for what is offered. Yes Costa Rica is very expensive but I’ve had much better for cheaper in the country.
