Property Description

Do you want to experience the desert like a local? Are you hoping to find yourself? Need a break from the craziness of Fes or Marrakesh? Don't have the money for an expensive "desert tour," but have plenty of time to enjoy what the desert offers? If your answers are all yes, Le Gout Du Sahara hostel is probably for you. Whether you're traveling alone, as a group, or as a family, there's a place for everyone at Le Gout Du Sahara hostel (Hostel Hassan).
We're not luxurious. We're just a basic hostel with beds, toilets, showers, breakfast, wifi, outlets, and a whole lot of heart.

Get to know our Amazigh hospitality. Our door has been open to travellers since 1994. Arrive morning or night. Have some tea. Take a rest. Plan your stay. Ride a camel into the desert to watch the sunset. Camp in the desert. Sleep under the stars. Hike to Erg Chebbi summit to watch the sunrise. Take a traditional sauna by being buried in the sand. Sandboard down the dunes: Share meals. Life lessons are free of charge.

We're located in the center of Merzouga, less than a two minute walk from the Supratours bus station ( and local taxi stand. It's a very small town, but you can find nearly everything you need. Le Gout Du Sahara is close to all the major attractions of the Erg Chebbi desert. The dunes can be explored by foot at anytime, while the nomad camps and black desert are more easily reached via camel or atv.

WARNING: 'While CTM ends in RISSANI, an additional 15MAD shared taxi will bring you here. Note that 4x4 guides will offer a ride for 10MAD, but they will take you deep into the desert an overcharge for camel tours.

After trekking you can relax on the outdoor terrace just in front of the house, or in the spacious common area. Both are also a great place to plan your next adventure and meet fellow travellers. Reception is open 24/7 and the hostel owner, Hassan, is happy to answer any questions you may have. Desert trips can also be arranged on request.

The hostel is decorated in the traditional Berber style. A mix of private rooms and dorm rooms, along with a bathroom, surround an open courtyard from which you can see the stars at night. In the back, overlooking the west oasis, you'll find a second terrace where it's possible to enjoy a bonfire in the evening. The hostel is clean and well maintained with a friendly informal environment. Wifi, breakfast, tea, and luggage storage before and after check-in are all included.

Cancellations or changes are accepted up to 24 hours prior to arrival. View House Rules

This stay was absolutely amazing one of the best hostels I’ve ever been in! :) it felt like home as soon as we were welcomed inside by Hassan. Hassan is an incredible person and he can help you with anything you need. Our bus did not leave until 7:30pm and Hassan was more than happy for us to hang about the hostel until then. Rooms were comfortable with beds, fan and tables. Chill out area is awesome. And we were even allowed to paint on the walls! Thanks for everything Hassan!!!!

What an incredible experience! If you've got the time, come to the desert, and live here like a local. Hassan can arrange all of your wish list items with local families. Walk to the desert, and be burried in the sand. Ride a camel to watch the sunset, or spend the night in the desert in a tent out under the stars. The desert has a way of showing you down from your hectic life, but it takes time to work. Book one night, stay a week; you'll be a whole new person.

We had a wonderful time at Hassan’s. The location is close to the dunes, and you can go there in your own time on foot. The place is a traditional home with large communal areas to chill should you wish to shy away from the sun. The hospitality from Hassan is truly one in a million, we felt relaxed and at home throughout the stay.

Could not recommend this hostel more. Hassan showed the best hospitality I have experienced from hostel staff in my years of travelling. We turned up very early from our overnight bus and our rooms weren’t available yet, but he accomodated us as he gave us a place to rest while he made us breakfast and coffee. He cooked everyone dinner, and he offered to do our laundry free of charge. He organised all tours and transport for us and made our trip so stress free. Couldn’t fault this place. 10/10

This hostel was simple but awesome. Hassan is like the nicest guy ever, so helpful with everything anyone needed. I was able to book a Sahara tour through the hostel for a reasonable price and there was even a nice free breakfast. Overall great atmosphere too. I can't recommend this hostel enough.

    Very Good

Hassan, the owner of the hostel, is a really nice guy, very generous and welcoming. I was upgraded to a private room, which was very nice. The hostel is quite cute. For the price, the facilities are acceptable, though the hostel needs a deep clean and some upgrades, especially the toilet. But, you have to remember you're in the middle of the desert! Breakfast was delicious. For the price, a good stay. Thanks Hassan
