Hostelworld says

Travellers looking to experience the unique atmosphere of Granada would do well to start at Makuto Backpackers Hostel. This friendly, laid-back hostel in the Albayzín features an outdoor terrace with a bar and a treehouse as well as comfy lounge areas with hammocks, cushions and guitars. One Hostelworld guest told us, 'after trying two other highly rated hostels in the city I much preferred sitting in the tree house in the sun'. They also serve budget-friendly home-cooked dinners. We like their free evening walking tours of the Albayzín and Sacromonte.

Squeeze every drop of fun out of Granada by staying at Makuto Backpackers Hostel. The best sights are within walking distance of our 18th-century mansion, but if you want to relax, that's OK, too! We're all about uniting the backpacker spirit with laid-back Spanish vibes. So hang out on a hammock on our patio or put your feet up in our lounge while you watch a movie or play a musical instrument. We'll set you up for the day with a free breakfast and we'll take you on free sunset walking tours through local neighbourhoods!

From Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, hop on the bus to the city centre and get off at the cathedral. From there we’re about a 13-minute walk. We’re surrounded by the historic neighbourhood of Albaicín, just five minutes' walk from the San Nicolas viewpoint where you can take in (and snap) amazing views of the Alhambra palace. There are sunny squares to wander through and impressive Arabic architecture to spot. The Santa Isabel la Real monastery is pretty much on our doorstep.

Rooms and Dorms

We have a choice of dorm sizes and you can opt for mixed or female-only. Some have air con and en-suites. There's free linen on every bunk and free shampoo and soap in the bathrooms. You can hire a towel from reception if you haven't brought one and hairdryers are free to use. Secure your stuff in a locker to keep it safe when you're out and about.

Extras and activities

You're invited to get stuck into our cheap ‘family style’ dinners and sample some of the best mojitos at our bar. Tea and coffee are our treat all day. Our barbecues are perfect for meeting new mates and if you've an eye on your budget, feel free to use our kitchen. Our friendly team is always keen to help: whether it's arranging activities (including diving, paragliding and flamenco shows), exchanging your book or storing your pack after checkout, just ask. Our Wi-Fi's free too!

Makuto was amazing! Our flight was delayed and then cancelled and we did not arrive in Granada until after the reception desk was closed. Makuto contacted us and let us know to go to their sister hostel which let us have beds for the night and Makuto and Eco hostel worked out the cost of the beds between them and did not charge us extra. They were very accommodating for us when we had a travel nightmare!

Really enjoyed my stay here as a solo female. Common areas are very social and the overall place has a nice vibe. Family dinners and walking tours were good. 1 euro beers at the bar. Good location. Highly recommend.

The Pros: Amazingly relaxed hostel; incredibly laid back atmosphere; lots of outdoor areas to lounge; bar on premises with cheap beer and sangria; social dinner for only 6€ and drink included; fun free walking tour. The Cons: Annoying location (must hike up difficult to walk, winding roads, away from the city center).

Makuto was the most beautiful little hostel. From the streer it looks like any other buolding, but as you enter it becomes an artists oasis with every nook and cranny filled with handpainted treasures, hammocks, instruments and a very funky cactus. Staff were always so keen to talk and help. Great atmosphere, great stay.

A little bit of a walk up the hill to get there. The hostel common areas are cool, and the beers are very cheap. The rooms are not as nice though, the room I was in had a 3 story bunk bed on one side and a 4story bunk next to it, very cramped - no floor space or lockers to put away bags so there is junk everywhere. Hostel puts on good events every night so it’s great for mingling

    Very Good

    06 Aug 2019
Wonderful vibes with an energetic and super friendly staff that established a respectful atmosphere without hindering anybody's fun. The hostel rooms were very small, without A/C, and mine had zero air flow, making for an impossibly hot hotbox. No room/locker space for people to place their luggage and other things. 3 outlets for four people. Slightly disorganized but to be expected.

Good vibe if you are solo traveling. There is a bar and nightly dinner for 6 euro. There are shared spaces too. It is a bit off the main road, so you have to walk through some trickier, darker allies which made me a bit uncomfortable. I thought the bathrooms were clean but my bed didn’t have an outlet by it which made it hard. I also woke up to bed bugs in the middle of the night. up leaving early and they were nice and prompt about refunding me.

Makuto Backpackers Hostel says

I think what makes us really special is that we pay a lot of attention to our common areas since we think this is what a hostel is all about. That's why we have three main outdoor areas - a patio and cosy bar to meet your fellow travellers in; Mexican hammocks for relaxing in; and a superb tree house for hanging out or catching a bit of sun. Plus we've got a chill-out area with a tree inside, a big BBQ close to the kitchen and tons more. We've really run away from the modern, impersonal set-up of some other hostels. For instance, it's free to use our shower, internet and kitchen after check-out if needed!
We're in a superb location in the Albaicin. It feels like a village in the middle of a city because 90% of the streets in our neighbourhood are cobblestone and pedestrian, with white facades, nice little squares, labyrinthine streets and cute houses. I always recommend that guests visit the Daral Horra Palace (where Boabdil's mother lived) and Bañuelo (Arab baths from XI century).
I think generally our hostel is suited for backpackers between 20 and 30 years old, but it really depends on guest's spirit, open mind and feeling. We have had older guests that loved Makuto because they said it has the essence of a hostel and loved common areas and younger ones whose parents have sent us presents after their stay as thanks for making them feel so comfortable.
