Get a taste of the Caribbean life at Hostel Masaya Santa Marta. We've got two swimming pools, not to mention a chilled-out rooftop terrace with a barbecue and an on-site bar. The aim of the game at this cool colonial house is to get you involved in Colombian culture, so we put on activities like salsa sessions and empanada-making classes. With a mix of spots for lounging, partying and socialising (including a cinema and games centre with a pool table), you can hang out with other backpackers or just take it easy.

If you're flying to Santa Marta, catch a bus or colectivo (minibus) from Simón Bolívar International Airport to the city centre where we're based. Just look for one that says 'Centro' or 'Kra 5' and you'll be with us in about half an hour. South America's first cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Marta, is a 3-minute walk from the hostel. When evening falls, take the 7-minute stroll to Parque de Los Novios, a square surrounded by lively bars, restaurants and clubs, to experience the buzz of the city after dark.

Rooms and Dorms

Settle into a mixed dorm to really enjoy the hostel vibe. Each bunk comes with a power socket (handy for overnight charging), a locker and free linen. A curtain gives you that bit of extra privacy, and there's a fan to keep the air fresh. Private rooms blend hostel attitude with boutique hotel style. All rooms and dorms are en-suite and have air con – something you'll definitely appreciate during Santa Marta's tropical summer.

Extras and activities

Sway in a hammock with a novel from our book exchange or FaceTime friends back home using the free Wi-Fi. We've got a kitchen where you can make snacks – using ingredients picked up from our shop – and a café for hot drinks and treats. Our staff can arrange trips, whether to the Caribbean beaches of Tayrona up the coast or treks to the Lost City hidden in the jungle.

Best hostel I’ve stayed at! Felt like a luxury hotel rather than a hostel. Great location, good atmosphere, very clean and well organised. One thing worth mentioning is that it can be a little loud overnight on Sunday nights when they have the party. Wasn’t a problem for us but maybe a consideration for others. Close to ATMs, markets, great food. Wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Santa Marta!

Amazing hostel! Very beautiful shared spaces, including a rooftop bar. Delicious buffet breakfasts. The staff were very helpful and stored our luggage for us while we went on a trek, and helped us reserve bus tickets to our next destination. I would definitely stay here again!

Only stayed for one night but the hostel was clean and the bar and pool on the roof made for a great social atmosphere. Also looked like they organized a lot of tours through the hostel to some places beyond just Tayrona and the Lost City. A little oasis in the middle of busy Santa Marta

Great hostel overall, great rooftop with pool, bar and many hangout/ socializing areas. Rooms can get a little crowded due to the small size but the curtains provide privacy. Friendly, helpful staff. Would def book again.

Very cool place to stay. Only issues were our ac didnt have a remote and it only worked one night. Also the bathrooms get pretty gross at night but i guess thats just going to happen with so many people using them.

We had a good experience at Masaya, staff was friendly, dorms were clean, beds have privacy curtains, bathroom were nice. The rooftop lounge + bar was super nice, the shared kitchen as well. It was quite hard to fit a backpack in the lockers though. They have several tours to book at the hostel and that are helpful with directions and the receptionist helped us find another laundromat when theirs were fully booked. Air conditioning was really bad and very noisy fan in the ceiling. Good location.

Masaya is in a great location with an elegant structure and vibe. We had some ongoing problems with a malfunctioning lock to our room which was the only major issue during our stay and did lead to some concerns with safety.
