Get a taste of the Caribbean life at Hostel Masaya Santa Marta. We've got two swimming pools, not to mention a chilled-out rooftop terrace with a barbecue and an on-site bar. The aim of the game at this cool colonial house is to get you involved in Colombian culture, so we put on activities like salsa sessions and empanada-making classes. With a mix of spots for lounging, partying and socialising (including a cinema and games centre with a pool table), you can hang out with other backpackers or just take it easy.

If you're flying to Santa Marta, catch a bus or colectivo (minibus) from Simón Bolívar International Airport to the city centre where we're based. Just look for one that says 'Centro' or 'Kra 5' and you'll be with us in about half an hour. South America's first cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Marta, is a 3-minute walk from the hostel. When evening falls, take the 7-minute stroll to Parque de Los Novios, a square surrounded by lively bars, restaurants and clubs, to experience the buzz of the city after dark.

Rooms and Dorms

Settle into a mixed dorm to really enjoy the hostel vibe. Each bunk comes with a power socket (handy for overnight charging), a locker and free linen. A curtain gives you that bit of extra privacy, and there's a fan to keep the air fresh. Private rooms blend hostel attitude with boutique hotel style. All rooms and dorms are en-suite and have air con – something you'll definitely appreciate during Santa Marta's tropical summer.

Extras and activities

Sway in a hammock with a novel from our book exchange or FaceTime friends back home using the free Wi-Fi. We've got a kitchen where you can make snacks – using ingredients picked up from our shop – and a café for hot drinks and treats. Our staff can arrange trips, whether to the Caribbean beaches of Tayrona up the coast or treks to the Lost City hidden in the jungle.

Masaya Hostal is an all-around winner! I cannot wait for my next opportunity to travel to Santa Marta, so that I can stay there again. We were drawn to Masaya because of the overall "positive vibe" we got from the website, and the actual experience totally delivered. We were there during high restrictions due to covid, but the staff did everything safe and possible to give us a wonderful and healthy experience.

Amazing hostel, the two pools were great, food is good. The vibe was pretty chill, if you’re looking for something relaxing this is the spot. AC only turns on at night FYI, no wifi in the dorms only in common areas. Lovely place tho, I would stay here again!

Very nice and beautiful place, central location, nice people around. 2 swimming pool (very convenient with the heat). The only "negative" point is that the room I was in didn't have any window showing the outside (only one with a view on the "living room", so not much natural light). But most of the time is usually spent outside, or on the (amazing) Rooftop terasse, so whatever!

Great hostel overall, great rooftop with pool, bar and many hangout/ socializing areas. Rooms can get a little crowded due to the small size but the curtains provide privacy. Friendly, helpful staff. Would def book again.

The place was good. The main bartender seemed to have an attitude with anyone who preferred to put their bill on their room rather than pay each time of service. Management might want to talk to him about how his personal preference shouldn’t interfere with his ability to provide service. He was very rude to customers.

    Very Good

    26 Sep 2020
I was at Masaya end Sept 2020, when things slowly started opening up again. Pros: location is great, hostel is beautiful, AC in room, warm shower. Cons: my room was nothing like the modern, bright and colorful pictures advertised, instead it was quite stuffy, old and dark. I couldn’t get a later checkout even tho I was about the only one in the hostel. Staff wasn’t that accommodating, didn’t feel like they wanted to do any effort to make the best of the current situation.
