Akari is a very homey and simple hostel with friendly staff that are happy to chat in English or Japanese. The Civic Hall tram stop is also very close by which made it very convenient to explore the city. There were also some traditional dishes made in the kitchen by staff that allowed people to try some Japanese cooking and socialize.

Good hostel with easy access to trams and you can walk to downtown. It was pretty empty when I went, reason for the minimal atmosphere, but the place is a decent setup. I paid for a couple nights, and ended up leaving after one. Would have been nice to be given a portion of the 2nd night's payment back, but it's no sweat.

To be honest it was fantastic in everyway. However this is the first hostel I have stayed at where they kick you out after check out. I had a flight at 8pm and wouldnt let me chill in the common room. Ive never seen that from a hostel before. Other than that it was awesome

Good hostel, the owner is very friendly and can speak English well. He has a good map and list of recommendations of places to go around the city. The hostel beds are nice and have curtains around them for privacy. The common room is nice. The building felt a bit old, but it's not a big problem. The bathrooms on the top floor are a bit small and uncomfortable too. Overall I would recommend this place.

Pros: very clean dorm and bathroom, friendly staff, comfy bed (curtain, outlet, lamp), nice kitchen and common room, lots of information and thoughtful travel tips on the walls, amazing water pressure in showers. Cons: the toilets are a tight squeeze, and the lockers won’t fit much bigger than a handbag. Overall, a definite recommend.
