Property Description

One of the most existing places in South East Asia to watch wildlife and its not in the zoo!

Nature Lodge Kinabatangan (NLK) is located within Kampung Bilit, a village along Kinabatangan river and takes its name from the white trunked-kabilit trees found in the nearby forest. We are easily accessible by car, and this village consists of only 150-180 people from about 30 households.

These villagers are mainly Orang Sugei (literally means River People) who make the living from fishing and making of crafts work such as fishnets and boat. They will later sell their crafts to the nearby villages.

The basic accommodation of NLK is built within the Kampung's lush green forest and it promises an unforgettable stay filled with adventure.

You will be able to spot primates such as the ever-energetic long tail and pigtail macaques, the amazing sounding gibbons, the elusive tarsier, lazy slow loris and human liked orang utans. The main attraction is the proboscis monkeys; with its long nose and big belly, this primate is only found on the island of Borneo.

You will also be able to experience close encounters with a subspecies of the Asian elephant, the Borneo Pygmy elephant. These elephants are smaller in sizes, have rather large ears and longer tails than its Asian counterpart.

While trekking to the near by Oxbow lake, Danau Bilit, you will continue to be amazed by the sighting of crocodiles basking along the muddy river banks, bearded pigs sniffing away for food, deer, wild cats such as the civets and clouded leopard and the workaholic otters. Our trained guide will also be able to show you a variety of insects and many species of colorful birds such as the Stork-billed kingfisher, the Oriental Pied Hornbill, the Crested Goshawk and many more

Nature Lodge Kinabatangan is a well run resort with comfortable and clean accommodation in a beautiful garden setting on the river. Our guide was exceptional, super knowledgeable about the animals and plants and highly skilled at spotting wildlife. The food was good and the lodge was well run with attentive staff. We would highly recommend Nature Lodge Kinabantangan.

The staff was great, and our guide Kairul was really friendly and knowledgeable. The days were perfectly organized with several activities (two river cruises plus day and night walks) which gave us the opportunity to see plenty of wildlife (proboscis monkeys, macaques hornbills and even crocodiles!). We also enjoyed the funny dance activity and the interactions with other guests (dining table is shared). The atmosphere was very relaxed and we would definitely like to come back again!

Our stay at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan in Sandakan, Malaysia was wonderful. Staff were very nice and helpful. They even had special vegetarian food specially cooked for us. We enjoyed our stay there. Only thing was we could not get to see any UrangUtan or elephant or bear in the wild and the weather was a bit overcast and rainy. We had to pay extra to leave early to see the feedings at Sepilok Rehab center to see the UrangUtans.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to nature KLodge Kingabatangtan. It was the highlight of our trip around Borneo. The Lodge was fantastic, the staff very friendly and the guides very knowledagable. The food provided was great. We stayed in a dorm room, and had full use of the balcony, so plenty of room to relax when not on river trips. The night walk was excellent, the best I did in Borneo, we seen many sleeping birds, spinders, large snails, mouse deer, civet, snake. Toilets need upgrading.

Great value for money. Knowledge and friendly staff. Accommodate meals for vegans. I didn't like that the guides used lasers to point out the animals and often got too close to them which visibly disturbed and irritated them.

Great location and guide was helpful and informative. We stayed in a dorm which was booked as a four bed but we were put in a six bed with another couple, not good as we have an eight year old child. The staff sorted this out quickly with little fuss. Food was good, river trips fun and good sightings. The shower block was not clean but bearable. Walls between dorm rooms are very thin so one night we needed ear plugs to keep out the music and shouting. We enjoyed the night walks and village trip.

Had a lovely stay, saw lots of animals (although no orangutans or elephants, sadly) and enjoyed the boat trips, jungle walks and the feel of the site. Chalet was air conditioned but otherwise very basic/budget. Food was edible but repetitive- breakfast however was big and tasty. Our guide was friendly. What made the stay was being in the forest, seeing creatures up close, even within the lodge grounds.
