Picture this – you, fruit juice in hand, soaking in a hot tub while you gaze at the stars – that’s the way we do it at Nomads Auckland! From this prime spot on our rooftop terrace, you'll have panoramic views of the city skyline and the harbour. There’s a kitchen up there, too, so you can cook while you watch the sunset. Our historic building also houses a free sauna to soothe those muscles. We’re an alcohol-free hostel, but if you’re up for a party we’ll take you down to Habana Joes – an 8-minute walk away – to mix with other travellers over cheap drinks.

We’re right in the centre of Auckland, 9 minutes' walk from the 300-metre-tall Sky Tower. From Auckland Airport, jump on the Skybus to Queen Street – 100 metres from us – and you’ll be at our hostel in around 55 minutes. Take the short stroll down Queen Street down to Queens Wharf for harbour views and bars. Want to explore more? The Downtown Ferry Terminal is 7 minutes away on foot. Hop on a boat to Birkenhead for bush walks or head out to Rakino Island for kayaking.

All of our private rooms have en-suite bathrooms and flatscreen TVs. A stay in our mixed and female-only dorms comes with free linen, and you can hire towels at our front desk. Backpack weighing you down? Take the elevator up to your room and get rid of your luggage in the under-bed lockers.

Extras and activities

Stop by our travel desk to ask about tours, plan your next stop or pick up your free city map. Need to take time out? Pick up a new book from the exchange in our lounge. You’ll find board games and DVDs there, too. If that isn't enough, we have free Wi-Fi, bean bags and a huge TV.

Overall a good stay but my bed was terribly uncomfortable and the shower kept going from scalding hot to freezing cold. Otherwise a decent hostel at a reasonable price.

There were no lockers in my room. Only drawers under the bed. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. The staff were clearly trying to keep the common areas clean as well. Very nice rooftop sitting area, spacious well-equipped kitchen. Great location - 5-minute walk from the harbour, close to a big supermarket and lots of restaurants, shops, etc. Quite noisy. Very good value for money! Very social bar offering free meals every day!

Really good vibes, super sociable but such a busy kitchen with no way near enough stuff or room for food and people to eat. Also no recycling :(

A lot of people in nomads are long term stayers. That changes the atmosphere. Toilets are dark and smudgy. The elevator half-works. Visitors in rooms facing the bar next to it won't get a lot of quiet.

Too many long timers who were already in cliques. Nobody made an effort to speak so it was hard to make friends to potentially travel with. I’ve been travelling for 6 months so I can make friends very easy but I met NO ONE. The only guy that spoke to me told me not to buy too much food as people steal it. The room looked like a bomb had exploded it was such a mess - I blame long termers who make themselves at home. One small fridge. Everyone was quite young, I’m 26 and I felt old. Wouldn’t stay.

Kitchen was a mess! Everyday! Felt like they were very understaffed and didn’t have enough people to clean. Location was nice though.

I was very unhappy with my stay at Nomads. Although the location is great, the cleanliness was definitely inadequate. I booked a double room (as I didn't want to stay in a dorm due to the Corona virus), and was actually disgusted by the state of the room: it looked as if there was a stain of blood on the bathroom floor, there was snot on the wall above the pillows, the curtains fell off. I tried to reach the reception at 8 (went downstairs + tried to reach them by mail) but they didn't respond.

My code did not work and staff never got around to give me a card key as they promised.

Probably the dirtiest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Whoever they have cleaning is doing the bare minimum. The kitchen is a disaster- not enough storage space for everyone’s groceries and on multi occasions I couldn’t find a single fork anywhere. The common room bean bags are stained and look like they we’re just picked out of a dumpster. I can’t recommend that you don’t stay here enough.

The bathrooms were gross, 2 out of 5 toilets werent working and were always full of boys with the door open. The beds were so creaky, when anyone moved everyone in the room woke up. People were using the washing machines outside my room at 6am. Honestly the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed, and I’ve stayed in good nomads before. It wasn’t clean and the room and stuff clearly not cleaned from the last people as there were only two of us in room. Avoid, I’ve also heard the same from others!
