Property Description

The Octopus Garden is a large old house with a beautiful shady garden patio in the traditional village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. Opening of f the patio is a gallery of Huichol art, spectacular visionary yarn paintings, beaded jewellery and weaving from the indigenous people in the nearby mountains. For over twenty years this was a screen-printing business and the building that now houses the Hostel was built for 3 large 8-armed presses, called “octopus’s” in Mexico. This and the fact that the family that created this place sailed from England, UK, explain the name which also refers to the famous Beatles song. Through the winter there is a program of dance and exercise workshops on the sprung dance floor and language and art classes in the event areas. .Riviera Nayarit Marina and the bathing beaches are only 4 or 5 blocks away. The Hostal is part of a small complex built around a garden patio with cafe serving the house roast Nayarit coffee, home baked goods and breakfsts and lunches in season. It is situated in the traditional town centre, only five blocks from the town plaza, the beach and the Marina Riviera Nayarit. The Octopus´s Garden is well known in the town and has been under the same ownership for over 20 years. The town is small, but well provided with corner stores, taco stands and restaurants. It is located on the northern edge of Banderas Bay, a popular anchorage in the sailing season which is November through to April.

Set on the north shore of Banderas Bay there is a lively sailing community and boat trips are available from the Marina. There are popular spots for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing in the vicinity. Just to the north are the picturesque towns of Sayulita and San Pancho, and to the south is the city of Puerto Vallarta.

Three of the rooms are completely enclosed, and the others are built with privacy but also plenty of ventilation. The beds are simple wooden beds with traditional spring mattresses, and we provide sheets, pillows, towels and covers in case of cold weather. There are floor fans, bedside lights and plug in points in each room. The rooms share a kitchen and 4 showers, 2 toilets and a face-washing area. Ample lockers are provided for each bed in the dorms.

Great place and great people. Had a lot of fun there. Entertainment was great with bands and solo performances. Twice a week a Spanish class is held for local children by snowbirds / expats and the jarden de pulpo lets the group use the facility. I recommend this place to the travel on a budget. One thing bring earplugs for the roosters in the morning. It is Mexico after all lol.

I loved my stay here. It was quiet and clean and in a great location near the bus stop and the beach. The staff was so friendly and kind, and so were the other people in the hostel. It’s also wonderful because it’s not a party hostel, so you actually can get some peace and quiet if you want that!

The Octopus Garden, located in the charming village of La Cruz, was quaint and simple. The noise factor from neighboring music venues made it hard to sleep most nights even with ear plugs. I was hoping for some quiet being in a small village but that did not happen. Just be aware of that factor. The location is about a 10 minute walk to the beach but it is a nice stroll and several blocks down is a small corner neighborhood store for provisions. I loved our stay in La Cruz.

The owner is nice and the handy man I a great guy to chat to. It's a small hostel in a tiny town so shops, bars, restaurants, beach, port and fishmarket all very close. Rooms and all is clean and it got a good vibe.

wonderful hospitality, helpful friendly staff, daily activities in the studio. variety of cultural interests ! Lots of indoor and street side restaurants within walking distance. Walk to English friendly corner stores for fresh fruit and veggies, or take a 14 peso bus ride to Bucerias supermarkets. Sunning on the beach in the afternoon or sea -wading! Sunset on the beach also pleasing- 5 stars for hostel location and friendliness!
