Property Description

This former monastery, dating back to the 13th century, called Antico Spedale del Bigallo, has been renovated and equipped with all the necessary comforts to offer modern travelers the same shelter and unique experience as once, in its original medieval atmosphere.

At our Bigallo Hostel, you can choose to stay in one of our 3 characteristic dormitories accommodations:

If you’re traveling with your friends, family, or in an organized group, we suggest that you choose one of our luminous dormitories – one that sleeps 5 and the other 8; an ideal solution given their spaciousness and comfort.
The decor was created by local craftsmen following designs of renaissance beds found in paintings from that time period. Each bed has its own storage space (locks can be requested at your arrival).
Each dormitory is equipped with shared bathroom with shower. It is possible to request a set of towels with a supplement of €.3,50

Sleeping in the alcoves is without doubt the most unique solution that the Bigallo Hostel offers. It is inspired by monks, that traditionally slept in small wooden alcoves. The Hostel offers 20 beds in the wooden alcoves, each alcove with two single beds, creating a spacious and luminous dormitory. The bathrooms are shared. It is possible to request a set of towels with a supplement of €. 3.50.

Private Rooms:
And if you prefer some more privacy, just choose one of our 5 double rooms (with the possibility to add one or more single beds), all equipped with private bathrooms with shower. It is also possible to add one or more single beds in the rooms. Sheets, towels and daily cleaning are included in this accommodation. View House Rules

This is the 2nd time I have stayed here and it was even better the 2nd time! It is a perfect hostel all around. Ferdi is the sweetest and all of the staff are awesome. The view is phenomenal and the weather is better up on the hill (though you do have to walk about 10 minutes up the hill). The rooms are clean and the garden is an amazing place to spend time (and stargaze!) I love the pasta times; 8eu for pasta, wine, an awesome view. The occasional concerts are great too! BEST HOSTEL EVER!

So the 2minute walk is a bit of a downer but COMPLETELY WORTH IT!! The view of the city, sunrise, sunset, the pasta nights, the breakfast, the staff!! There’s nothing bad I could say about this place!! I ended up staying an extra night because of how wonderful it is! Yeah its a bit out of the way but this place is a treasure for sure!! Added bonus: theres a cat and I met surprise dog who was the sweetest girl!

Clearly one of the most beautiful places I ever stayed at, the atmosphere is so familliar, friends meeting at the diner let you exchange easily with everyone. The location and the view to Florence at night is so dreamy. The Garden is a the ground for calmness, to relaxe and fly above the clouds. The staff are so close to everyone, you feel just home. For all travalers, looking for a quite special hostel, the hostel will mark your journey! Bless you guys!

We loved our stay here! A really calming place where you could just chill out all day in the beautiful environment - totally different from most other hostels. The pasta time at night meant they everyone socialised and had a great time - super good deal as well. Free breakfast was good. Other people mentioned bed bugs but our 5 bed room was perfectly clean and had none. Bathrooms nice and clean. Cool experience to stay in a place like this at that price. Cute kitty cat

Stayed here for 2 nights during my stay in Florence. First thing first, the location is just amazing but for that you need to walk 25 minutes on a steep road to get an amazing view of the city. We had luggage with us and hence the walk was a tough one. However ,once we reached there it was worth it. So for people thinking of walking from the bus station ,just a casual warning. The experience of staying in a 800 year old monastery turned hostel is amazing. You will love the place. Just go for it

This hostel was in a different class - expect a quieter place, small town feels while still being fairly close to Florence (30 min bus + 20 min uphill walk - mark on your map where to go if you’ll arrive after dark). It has fantastic views, and is in an incredible old monastery - a very neat place to stay. Comfortable beds, incredible olive grove and orchard, great breakfast and the staff were friendly.

I truly did enjoy my stay here. It started off in a bad foot because my boyfriend and I walked a mile and a half uphill more than we should have just because there wasn't really a sign for the hostel and the directions weren't the best. The place is unique, theres history and delicious dinner that makes it easier to meet people and chat, that's the best part! OH and the view of course. If you're on foot and exploring... It's a bit inconvenient.

The old history of this building is neat but it feels like that is being used as a crutch to avoid what would otherwise be considered basic cleanliness standards (dirty armchairs in waiting area, cobwebs & dirt on edges of room, stained bedsheets). The hostel is far from Florence and requires a long walk to the nearest bus stop - fine for those looking for a more relaxing/spiritual experience but not for those with limited time to experience the city. On a positive note, the owner was lovely!
