Property Description

'La Palapa Hut', a boutique nature hostel with camping is located in the heart of Puerto Jimenez, nestled into a tropical garden of 1.5 hectares or 4 acres bordering forest, pasture, creek and mangrove. This is an extremely tropical oasis just on the fringe of downtown, that you can call home for a few days. It can be hot on the Osa so maybe sip a cool one or enjoy a free coffee. If you're into a friendly welcome, super economy, great staff, cleanliness, lots of green space, large and well equipped kitchen, a central location, pond, gardens and animals then visit La Palapa when you're in town.

The main reason for visiting La Palapa is that you can actually see many animals without actually leaving the property. Onsite wildlife sightings include: all four species of Monkey, Kinkajou, Raccoon, Coatis, Armadillos, Anteaters, Sloth, Raptors, Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, Hummingbirds, Herons & various other Birds, Crocodiles, Caymans, Lizards, Snakes, Beetles, Butterflies, Iguanas, Insects, Reptiles & Amphibians. All photos were taken onsite. Bring your cameras & enjoy!

We offer a tropical lodge experience without a tropical lodge price tag in the heart of Puerto Jimenez, which means you'll be close to everything & everyone else when visiting PJ, but still be spending time in a beautiful, tropical environment versus not! Our communal kitchen is well equipped for breakfast, lunch and dinner, (not the food though, bring your own). The large property is connected by raised trailways, internal trails, sidewalks & bridges with a number of open-air lounges, garden sitting areas, outdoor garden showers and even a pond. These amenities allow up close viewing of many species and at the same time offer great photo ops in the garden which you can then send to friends & family using the free WIFI.

We cater to all ages of travelers looking for an authentic, tropical experience without compromising quality, cleanliness or economy. Lodging options start at range from $7 per person per night. The rancho & tent, dorms, singles, doubles & family rooms include sheets, blankets, pillows, towels & soap. Tent rentals include a choice of campsite, tent, bedroll, top sheet, towel & soap and a locker which requires YOUR OWN personal lock. If you forget to bring one, don't worry, we have them for sale at the front desk.

We do strive to maintain a healthy level of cleanliness & comfort in this tropical property between the primeval Osa forest of Corcovado & the abundant tropical waters of the 'Golfo Dulce' & Pacific ocean, but please understand where we are only 8.5 degrees north of the equator, 'the tropics', so don't be surprised that insects are visiting at the same time as you, after all this is their home.

Upon arrival make sure to ask about our beach and mountain excursions. We offer a large selection of camping equipment and a few remote campsites. We'll be happy to send the more adventurous on their with only a digital map and some geo coordinates, but we can also escort you to the beach or the center of the Osa from where you'll wake to the forest beginning a new day with the hoots and howls of congo monkeys and the squawks of brightly colored Scarlet Macaws. Wow!!

One of my favourite hostels! Beautiful location in tucked away in nature with towels and great breakfast provided. The owner truly loves her place and the people who visit, make sure to ask for a shot of her infamous chiliguaro :)

Andrew is very nice and super helpful! And there really are animals all over the place. You will for sure see monkeys right on the property! The kitchen is well equiped and clean, nice big common area with comfy seating.

Probably the best hostel in Puerto Jimenez. It’s a 5 minute walk to town but that means your on the edge of the jungle with spider monkeys stealing your bananas and scarlet macaws as your alarm clock. It’s a hotel most of the time so the facilities are excellent and it was very sociable when I was there. Thanks for a great stay Andrew!

A great place to stay as a stepping stone into Corcovado National Park. If you haven’t already sorted a guide - they will arrange for one to come and visit you at the hostel once you arrive. Other than perpetual coffee - it’s a self catering hostel. There is a small supermarket across the road and a bigger one about a 5 minute walk away. There are also plenty of sodas and restaurants in the town or on the waterfront. There’s abundant wildlife in and around the hostel.

Great place where we spent 2 nights. Andrew was really kind and helpful! The private room was small but clean and it was lovely waking up surrouned by birds and monkeys (and other animals)! Laundry place is across the road, the restaurants on walking distances. We did take a taxi from the bus stop as with our backpacks it was too far (in the rain). Car rental around the corner. Thanks Andrew!

    Very Good

Lots of bugs! No one else really staying there (or the town itself!) but probably because its a bit far out, this meant the atmosphere was a bit dead but if you want some peace and quiet would be ideal. The closest beach wasn’t great and a bit of a distance to the other one. Airport handy. Upside: lots of monkeys in and around the hostel to see!

    Very Good

I only stayed at the Palapa Hut Hostel for one night. The hostel as a great location in the middle of a jungle patch with a lot of wildlife nearby. I really enjoined walking around the hostel area to spot wildlife. The hostel is also located close to the airport. The host is friendly but do not speak English. I recommend to know some Spanish to get the best out of the stay.

The location is pretty good, 5/10 minutes walking distance to grocery store/bus terminal. The whole place is lovely, lots of hammocks and cozy places to hangout and relax. Lots of wildlife on the property, very nature based. At the same time are the rooms because of the houses‘ location very dirty and because of broken fly screens there were lots of bugs and other tiny animals in our rooms. I like nature but in this case sleeping indoor next to a Gecko was a little bit too intimate :-D

Was not clean and highly expensive for no reason (in addition to the charge mentioned in hotel world charged me with fee and taxes 15 USD + prepayment on the site). Was really dirty and the a.c didn't work well. Staff doesn't know English and arrived very late in the morning.
