Property Description

La Palapa Hut Nature Hostel & Campground is located in the heart of Puerto Jimenez on a tropical garden of 1.5 hectares or 4 acres bordering forest, pasture, creek, and mangrove. It's a lush, tropical oasis on the fringe of downtown that you may call home for a few days. If you're into a friendly welcome, lots of personal space, good wifi, healthy environment, economy, great staff, cleanliness, green space, central location, pond, gardens and lots of wildlife then visit La Palapa when you're in PJ. The bar has been converted to a more open, common kitchen area for our guests. We even built a BBQ pit with lots of benches for your enjoyment. The main gardens were expanded and updated during 2020 & 2021 to offer large doses of personal freedom and liberty to those visiting them. We presently offer more single-room and double-room options while our public dormitories are shut down due to COVID restrictions.

The main reason for visiting La Palapa is that you can actually see many animals without actually leaving the property. Onsite wildlife sightings include all four species of Monkey, Kinkajou, Raccoon, Coatis, Armadillos, Anteaters, Sloth, Raptors, Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, Hummingbirds, Herons & various other Birds, Crocodiles, Caymans, Lizards, Snakes, Beetles, Butterflies, Iguanas, Insects, Reptiles & Amphibians. All photos were taken on site. Bring your cameras & enjoy!

La Palapa Hut offers a tropical lodge experience without a tropical lodge price tag in the very heart of Puerto Jimenez, which means you'll be close to everything & everyone else when visiting PJ, but still be spending time in a beautiful, tropical environment versus not! The property allows up-close viewing of many animal species and at the same time offers great photo ops in our gardens to send later to friends & family using our free WIFI.

We cater to all ages of travelers looking for an authentic, tropical experience without compromising quality, cleanliness, or economy. Lodging options start at $15 USD per person per night. The dorms include sheets and pillows with covers while singles & doubles include sheets, pillows and covers, towels, and soap. Tent rentals include a choice of campsite, tent, bedroll, top sheet, and a locker that requires YOUR OWN personal lock.

We do strive to maintain a healthy level of cleanliness & comfort in this tropical property between the primeval Osa forest of Corcovado & the abundant tropical waters of the 'Golfo Dulce' & Pacific ocean, but understand where we are only 8.5 degrees north of the equator, 'the tropics', so don't be surprised to find insects while you visit, after all, this is their home.

Upon arrival make sure to ask about our adventures and excursions.

Pura Vida,

Familia Gray Ortega and all the staff at La Palapa Hut Nature Hostel & Campground View House Rules

Would stay there again, the staff is very friendly and helpful at providing suggestions for free and budget activities to do in Puerto Jimmiez. The property had an on-site bar and was filled of lots of things to do. Free coffee was available most of the day.

Hosts are lovely and very knowledgable and helpful. Great recommendations for activities and advice about getting around. Super close to stores and the PMJ airport. Grounds are beautiful and relaxing. My only complaint is the dorm set up. The gate and the light for the stairs and the bathroom are disruptive for those in the bunks.

Andrew is just the most helpful & nice staff in the hostel i ever met. He is like a grandpa who likes to share all the thing he knows and even though he has so many guest comming and leaving, he still appriciate everyone & does his job with passion. The hostel is surrounded by nature which alowed you to see a lot of animals on the property. The only thing which was not so great where the 8 bed room we had. Because it was very warm and not so clean. But i would still go there again and again! Thx

I had an amazing time in this place! Andrew is super friendly, fun and helpful! Bus schedules, tours and places to go including yummy local food, he knows from the top of his head! :) I stayed in a dorm bed without AC, but there are other rooms with this option. It didn't bothered me though. The place is really nice to have a chilled stay, away from the centre where it's busy, here you wake up with the birds and possibly some monkeys :) Still close enough to walk into town and get your supplies!

Andrew is the kindest person I have met in Costa Rica. He gave me the warmest welcome and took so much time and care assuring i had a great stay. He took me around the UNREAL property showing me so much wild life. The location is perfect and the hostel it’s self is the coolest hostel i’ve been in. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Feels like you are in the middle of the forest like others say. Good kitchen. Room with AC is a plus. Staff is very friendly and super knowledgeable about the area. Staff helped to book tours and reserve bikes.

The staff is really friendly and Pura Vida. There is an info desk where you can ask about tours and how to get around, very useful. The is a big kitchen where it is easy to cook. I had a dorm with no a/c. There were fans but no movement of air in the dorm so it was warmer than outside at night. Some of the pillows had mold on them, it might be time to change them. The wifi was good but not hot water in the shower next to the dorm. There is a bar with ok price and beds were comfortable.

    Very Good

    19 Jan 2020
The location is awesome. Feels like you’re really in the jungle instead of next to town. The atmosphere probably would have been better if there wasn’t a group of 18 year old girls from Texas screaming like banshees for hours on end. The dorms were insanely hot and the lack of fans was astonishing. I woke up drenched in sweat multiple times each night. It’s actually the reason I switched hostels. If there were some small fans near the beds I’d give a much higher rating.

Didn’t like, the guy running the place. Discrepancy between website and website prices. Brought this up to him and he berated us for not booking on his website even though it never showed up on a search engine and we only found the property through website. I negotiated keeping the price but moving to AC room instead of fan.
