Property Description

La Palapa Hut Nature Hostel & Campground is located in the heart of Puerto Jimenez on a tropical garden of 1.5 hectares or 4 acres bordering forest, pasture, creek, pond, and mangrove. It's a lush, tropical oasis on the fringe of downtown that you might call home for a few days. If you're into a friendly welcome, lots of personal space, good wifi, healthy environment, economy, great staff, cleanliness, green space, central location, pond, gardens and lots of wildlife then visit La Palapa when you're in PJ. The bar has been converted to a more open, common kitchen area for our guests. We even built a BBQ pit with lots of benches for your enjoyment. The main gardens were expanded and updated with many new tables during 2020 & 2021. A garden bar was added in early 2022. It's in a testing time period, so if you like the addition of the bar please tell the staff.

The main reason for visiting La Palapa is that you can actually see many animals without actually leaving the property. Onsite wildlife sightings include all four species of Monkey, Kinkajou, Raccoon, Coatis, Armadillos, Anteaters, Sloth, Raptors, Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, Hummingbirds, Herons & various other Birds, Crocodiles, Caymans, Lizards, Snakes, Beetles, Butterflies, Iguanas, Insects, Reptiles & Amphibians. All photos were taken on site. Bring your cameras & enjoy!

La Palapa Hut offers a tropical lodge experience without a tropical lodge price tag in the very heart of Puerto Jimenez, which means you'll be close to everything & everyone else when visiting PJ, but still be spending time in a beautiful, tropical environment versus not! The property allows up-close viewing of many animal species and at the same time offers great photo ops in our gardens to send later to friends & family using our free WIFI.

We cater to all ages of travelers looking for an authentic, tropical experience without compromising quality, cleanliness, or economy. Lodging options start at $15 USD per person per night. The dorms include sheets and pillows with covers while singles & doubles include sheets, pillows and covers, towels, and soap. Tent rentals include a choice of campsite, tent, bedroll, top sheet, and a locker that requires YOUR OWN personal lock.

We do strive to maintain a healthy level of cleanliness & comfort in this tropical property between the primeval Osa forest of Corcovado & the abundant tropical waters of the 'Golfo Dulce' & Pacific ocean, but understand where we are only 8.5 degrees north of the equator, 'the tropics', so don't be surprised to find insects while you visit, after all, this is their home.

Upon arrival make sure to ask about our adventures and excursions.

I've stayed at this hostel twice... And both times have proven this place's pure magic! It's the only place worth staying Puerto Jimenez, as you will eventually see a ton of animals (monkeys, macaws, iguanas, and I even saw a sloth!), and be surrounded by beautiful flora. I've met lifelong friends I'll cherish forever, healed from heartbreak, and even met my genuine soul mate here! And Jackie (the owner) effortlessly adds to the magic too, she's loved by everyone! 100/10 would recommend Palapa!

I highly recommend this place to anyone! The service here is absolutely amazing. Andrew, Jackie, and staff go above and beyond to help their guests out. The property is beautiful and you’re more than likely to see some wildlife including monkeys. The communal area is big and they have a bar so it’s a great place to hang at the end of your day out. Puerto Jimenez is an amazing town as well. It’s safe, people are friendly, the food options are great, and there’s a lot to do/see. I would come back!

Great place near the bay. Amazing hosts who are knowledgeable and helpful. Beautiful outdoor sitting and bar. Dorms seriously lack a fan, a bit difficult to sleep on sober hot days.

The hostel itself is very nice and surrounded by trees and animals. The rooms were decent, very hot and no WiFi. The owner was very nice and helpful with many tips.

We enjoyed our stay at Palapa Hut! First of all the owner is super helpful and friendly, he organises the Corcovado national park day trips and other local tours for you. Beautiful gardens around the hostel, very spacious to focus on social distancing and full of wildlife. We stayed in the 10 person dorm which is very secure with the front gate locked 24/7. If you’re preparing your own meals then the kitchen is not the best equipped, but does the job. The supermarket is just across the street!

+ beautiful garden, many aminals, host is nice (she showed me animal) , location, warm water - moldy bathroom, moldy fridge, poor ventilators in the room, poorly equipped kitchen, no WiFi in the room (only in common areas), not comfy seats in common area, Someone took all my food from the fridge, and the host couldn't care less (I know there is nothing to do in that situation, but a little sympathy would help). For that price the best and only accommodation around, but still not worth of money.

The hostel is huge and you can see that it used to be and has the potential am to be a fantastic place! But it’s got a little tired and run down, and was lacking atmosphere. However a great location for spotting wildlife, and positioned between the town and small beach and associated restaurants :)

Probably the most unfriendly hostel you could ever imagine. They treat you like a cash machine and not a human being. Facilities are appalling and there is not an appetite for cleanliness. Awful place and stay else where when in the area.
