Property Description

PLEASE NOTE: We have two locations in Bucharest, and whilst you're welcome to chill at either Podstel, consider your own preferences when booking:

1 - Podstel Umbrella: This is our modern, chilled, quiet and comfortable space where private rooms are also available.
2 - Podstel Bucharest: This is our hostel/teahouse combo offering daily Family Meals and social evening activities.

Welcome to the Podstel family!

Podstel Umbrella is more than just a bed - we are a community hostel run by travellers, located right in the heart of Piata Romana - the liveliest, youngest and most hip neighbourhood in Bucharest. Podstel was founded by Dan and Sam - childhood friends from the UK - who shared a collective dream to set up a home where travellers and locals could share their stories and learn something new from each other. After a successful couple of years with Podstel Bucharest, we’ve now taken what we've learned and opened our second location - Podstel Umbrella - which we’re very excited to be able to share with you.

Here’s what you can expect from a stay with us at Podstel Umbrella:

We know what it’s like to be on the road. Our staff all love to travel and have collectively adventured to over 50 countries on 5 continents over the past 10 years.

Beyond a friendly social atmosphere, hot shower and good night’s sleep, we want to welcome you as a friend, get to know you and make your trip extra special by giving you personalised recommendations of things to see and do in Bucharest.

Podstel Umbrella is located in a gorgeous, charming, and homely building from the 1920s, which was previously occupied by Romanian royalty. It has been recently restored and modernised, but rest assured special care was taken to preserve much of its original character and artistic elements. We have a beautiful courtyard and terrace area surrounded by a huge wall of green ivy, trees and comfy benches, which make a great place to kick back, relax and meet fellow travellers.

On the second floor, you’ll also find a romantic balcony with comfy seating overlooking the courtyard, which is perfect for daydreaming, reading or simply relaxing and watching the day drift away on a hot summer’s day. With only 34 beds, Podstel Umbrella feels familiar, like a small family home where it's easy to get to know fellow travellers and our friendly staff on a personal level.

Whether you’re staying at Podstel Umbrella or Podstel Bucharest, you’re part of the family and welcome to join in on the fun wherever it’s happening. If you feel the urge to take part in something more lively, take a short trip in the evenings and visit our sister hostel Podstel Bucharest, where we host daily Family Meals and a range of social events.

We're located right in in the heart of Bucharest’s most hip neighbourhood, Piata Romana - a perfect location to make sure you experience the best that Bucharest has to offer. We are within 5 minutes walking distance to many concept cafes, vintage shops, restaurants, urban bistros, parks, bookshops, nightclubs, garden cafes, supermarkets and Bucharest’s most famous and beautiful street, Calea Victoriei, where you’ll find all kinds of museums, famous buildings and landmarks.

With the French Embassy directly across the road and guarded 24 hours a day, we are situated in a very safe and secure neighbourhood. Although Bucharest is a walkable city, we are only 5 minutes walk from the Airport bus (number 783), Piata Romana Metro and all major bus routes, giving convenient access to the whole city.

Here's our proximity to points of interest in Bucharest:

- Gara De Nord (main train station): 20 minutes walk, 8-minute taxi.
- Nightclubs: 5 minutes walk to Gradina Eden (one of Bucharest’s most famous nightclubs).
- Old Town: 20-minute walk to all the bars, cafes, bistros, clubs, art galleries, antique shops & museums.
- Airport Bus (no. 783): 5 minutes walk from Podstel Umbrella.

- Free hugs and positivity.
- Fully equipped self-catering kitchen with a cooker, microwave, fridge, utensils, herbs & condiments, reverse osmosis water!
- Free board games.

That’s everything for now, thanks for reading and we look forward to welcoming you to the Podstel Family. View House Rules

I felt a little unsafe in Bucharest in general, and when I first arrived at the hostel, which is on a narrow residential street, I was not reassured. But after walking around Bucharest I realized that the hostel location is really good. It is a block from a street with lots of cafes, there is a great restaurant within 5 minutes walk, and it is about a 10 minute walk from another street full of shops and the airport bus stop.

I've stayed here twice while visiting Bucharest and for good reason. The hostel is in a great location and close to the old town. It's also near a bus stop which takes you directly to the airport. The staff are very friendly and happy to help. The hostel is in a beautiful old building and it's a relaxing place to stay. Overall a top rate hostel, so I would have to recommend this one :)

Lovely place. Really really recommend the night social event down at the other hostel (cheap Uber ride) which is good for fun and pre-drinks before you can go out at 10pm if you fancy! They are amazing musicians - loved the Portuguese singer!

Amazing staff. Friendly atmosphere. Cozy bed. Big kitchen. Great common area (TV, games, guitar). Awesome event! but the restroom smelled rather bad tho. And basic security like a lock for your own locker is not provided. You’ll have to pay for it. But I’ll stay here again in the future.

Hostel in a good location near the subway at main bus route about 5 min walk to both. Had to wait about for a shower a few times as there are only 4 but not the end of the world. Big spacious kitchen I didnt cook so not sure how the cooker ect was beds are ok mine had a big dip in the middle. The heater in the room didnt work but the covers on bed where warm enough. Staff all seemed friendly in an old building so not all modern but kept clean which is what matters the cleaner was friendly too

Definitely recomendable spot. My partner and I stayed here when We arrived and came back for one last stay before our flight back home. The atmosphere is chill, the receptionist were very kind and helpful. Security is great. Definitely appreciate them having a locker storage (in case u need to stash your stuff before u depart to the airport after check out). Close to bus and metro to move around and many restaurants ( recomen la mama). Thank u Podstel Umbrella for the comfortable stay

I arrived at 10.30pm, front desk was already closed. They have a system for late check ins but they didn't leave a card with the instructions for me. There were left for other passengers. The emergency number took an hour to reply to my messages and calls. Next morning the receptionist was really uninterested in doing my formal check in, she charged me, gave me no receipt nor info about tours or things happening in Bucharest. I booked tours on TripAdvisor. List continues but no characters left
