Property Description

Princes Street East caters mainly for independent, international backpackers between the ages of eighteen and thirty. Bear in mind, however, that this is only the core group; any traveller (over 18) with a valid international passport and a desire to have a good time is welcome here!

When we say independent, we mean it! You'll find NO lockouts or silly curfew rules here! The staff are always doing their best to provide our guests with a friendly, easy-going and creative atmosphere. And you'll often find one or more of our residents jamming away on their guitar, or collecting others to join them in a night out on the town!

There are 77 steps up to our funky little place (and no elevator) so please keep this in mind when filling your backpack. Our comfortable dormitories hold between four and twelve persons. We also have three double rooms, ideal for couples or persons who desire a little more privacy. You'll find ample toilets and showers (no shortage of hot water here) conveniently located on all three floors. And during your stay, why not take in one of over 500 movies available to you in our Video lounge?

You'll find most of the snack goods you'll want for the film, as well as any toiletries you may need during your stay, in our resident shop. We also have a self-catering kitchen (including free tea/coffee), refrigerators for residents' use, a large dining area, laundry facilities, a payphone, free Internet access and lots of great pictures on the walls. Also, all our residents enjoy a free dinner each Sunday night!

All the staff (and Manager) are backpackers themselves, so you can be sure that we will look after your needs.

Overview

We're an easy-going bunch of backpacking fanatics here at Princes Street Backpackers East, which gives our hostel a nice relaxed vibe. Stop by the common room (you might catch us jamming on the guitar) to meet other travellers, mostly aged 18 to 30. Free Wi-Fi's on tap to update your mates on your Scottish adventures. Our video lounge is the place to catch a movie. With a collection of over 500, there's plenty to choose from. We'll also show you around Edinburgh's historic sites and hidden gems on our free walking tour, and treat everyone to dinner on a Sunday!

Location

We're right in the heart of the city, 3 minutes' walk from Waverley Train Station where the Airlink 100 bus drops off. It takes under 30 minutes from Edinburgh Airport. If you're arriving by coach, the bus station's a 7-minute stroll away. The Royal Mile's just 8 minutes away and leads you to the castle, which is 13 minutes away. For food and drinks, walk 9 minutes to Rose Street where you'll find great pubs, whisky bars and lively clubs.

Rooms and Dorms

Choose to crash in our mixed dorms to get right into the hostel spirit. All bunks come with sheets and shared bathrooms, and you can hire towels. Travelling as a couple? A private double room gives you a bit more personal space. Large backpacks can be kept safely in our lockers.

Extras and activities

Our on-site shop is the place to pick up snacks or any toiletries you might not have packed. You can save cash by cooking for yourself in our shared kitchen, where you'll find free tea and coffee too. Sign up for trips to the Highlands at our tour desk, then grab a free map of the city and explore the old and new towns. You can stay out late as we're a curfew-free 24-hour hostel. Bear in mind it's a 77-step climb to reach us in our traditional tenement building!

It's an old building but has lots of charm. The lower floor of dorms has recently been updated and was super clean and nice. Great bathroom facilities there. Middle floor had some neat murals but was falling apart a bit, I would imagine it will be updated next. Despite being old, it was very clean. Staff were really nice and helpful. Plus it's right in the city center, you couldn't ask for a better location.

No wifi in the rooms, nor enough power plugs... We asked for toilet paper in the reception and they didn't give us... The only good thing was the location and the nice cleaning lady... I'm sure it is possible to find a better place for the same price.

Weirdest hostel I've stayed in. The walls in the hallways have holes in them. The kitchen is several flights of stairs from most of the dorms. The floor I was on had one toilet/ shower for the entire floor (which was several dorms). The shower and toilet were in a wet room, so if one was in use, so was the other. The beds don't have ladders which isn't a massive issue unless you're short (I am very short). The room was nice and clean. Fine for a short stay but more than two nights would suck.

The location is great. Two of the staff I interacted with were great, a Romanian girl who was new and a Norwegian-Scottish guy. The new bathrooms near the check-in room were great. But the rest was awful. It's up four flights of musty, narrow stairs; I was told that there was no fire exit other than those. The office was disgusting - including a moldy fish tank - and our room had no curtain or blinds. The window was held up by a toilet paper roll. The light made it impossible to sleep.

stayed for one night but would never stay again. we missed our 10:30 check out as I forgot to put on an alarm. When we did check out at 2pm we were told that we would be charged a whole extra night stay for 2 people which I find quite harsh. the atmosphere is very ghetto. bathrooms look rundown. hallways have horrible psychedelic paintings and everything looks old and used. if you want something cheap with a terrible atmosphere /low classs that this is the right hostel for you.

Arrived at 1 front door was looked knocked repeatedly and waited outside for 15 minutes before leaving. Came back later and when we finally managed to get inside were made to sit in the in the lounge for half an hour before we could check in. Once checked in the staff were rude and unhelpful. Room was small and stunk. No internet and only on bathroom per floor so if on of the other 30 odd people on the floor were showering you couldn’t even use the toilet and once you finally managed to find it
