With over 30 years of experience, we know a thing or two about good hospitality at Queen Street Backpackers. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you get it for free every morning. Need a chill-out day? Our communal lounge comes complete with DVDs and Netflix, so you can spend the day snuggled on the sofa. Refresh your reading material at our book exchange, or pair up with a fellow traveller for a game of pool. You might end up sharing a drink later at our daily happy hour in the on-site bar – cheers to that!

You’ll find us near Queen’s Wharf in the city centre. Exploring's easy – Britomart train station is just 4 minutes’ walk away, and Customs Street bus station is less than 3 minutes away. Need to get to Auckland Airport? Hop on at Customs Street and you'll be there in under 50 minutes on the Sky Bus. While in Auckland, make sure you tick all the must-dos off your list: we’re talking the Sky Tower (10 minutes on foot) and Auckland Domain park (28 minutes’ walk away) for a selfie on an extinct volcano.

Rooms and Dorms

All our rooms have big windows, so they're flooded with natural light in the daytime. Take your pick from double and twin privates with shared bathrooms (complete with hot showers), or mixed and female-only dorms. There are lockers, your linen's free, and you can hire a towel if you forgot yours.

Extras and activities

Arriving late? Don’t worry, there's always someone at our 24-hour reception to welcome you – you can grab your free city map here, too. If you’re having a lazy day, feel free to make the most of facilities like our two big kitchens (so there’s always somewhere to cook your favourite pasta), vending machines (for late-night snacks) and a launderette (to get your backpack smelling fresh). Chores done? Upload the travel photos you have so far using our free Wi-Fi.

Very happy with the room and the cleanliness aswell as the room service, was expecting a kitchen tap but we made do. I think it was well worth the price tag.

This the second time I've stayed here ad it was great again. Fairly simple accommodations with great staff and an outstanding location: close to Skybus stop, and close to the ferry. Will stay here again!

A super located, low budget place to stay in the CBD of Auckland. The free breakfast is simple, but a bonus. Gripes: The lounge/reception is open plan so people are watching TV, playing pool, eating etc. in the same space. I have never known so many people all watching their phones with the volume cranked up. Headphones? Also, most of the toilets do not have sinks, so you have to walk 20m down the corridor to find somewhere to wash you hands. Shower head fix and low, but temp. & pressure OK.

First hostel I have ever stayed at, the day luggage storage is in one big room which I didnt love but it was a great experience overall, nice people, comfy beds. Breakfast was a great touch.

Positively, this hostel is in an excellent location at a cheap price. I doubt you will find better for location and price. Note that there are no security lockers but valuable items can be stored behind the front desk. Also note that the hostel is located above a bar: it will be louder outside Friday and Saturday nights.

The Hostel wasn’t the best. Felt like living in a prison. It was really dark and the window in my room faced a dark space , so there was no chance to get fresh air in the room. ( it had no aircon or fan too!). The room was pretty clean tho. The music in the bar was too loud and it was going for the whole night so it was really hard to sleep.

Unclean and outdated, badly in need of a refurb. Breakfast was not worth it, pillows and bedding not comfortable. Bathroom and toilet facilities odd setup and unclean.

Realllly poor staff attitude. I know it's just a hostel job but these people are miserable and it showed. We booked three nights in a four bed dorm and the place is just beyond filthy. Base backpackers was much better quality and we also found a clean private room at zest ok for the same price as a dorm here. If you're a well traveled backpacker, you know the places that are just too much of a gross cesspool to stay in and this is one of them. Enjoy auckland more by choosing a better option.
