With over 30 years of experience, we know a thing or two about good hospitality at Queen Street Backpackers. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you get it for free every morning. Need a chill-out day? Our communal lounge comes complete with DVDs and Netflix, so you can spend the day snuggled on the sofa. Refresh your reading material at our book exchange, or pair up with a fellow traveller for a game of pool. You might end up sharing a drink later at our daily happy hour in the on-site bar – cheers to that!

You’ll find us near Queen’s Wharf in the city centre. Exploring's easy – Britomart train station is just 4 minutes’ walk away, and Customs Street bus station is less than 3 minutes away. Need to get to Auckland Airport? Hop on at Customs Street and you'll be there in under 50 minutes on the Sky Bus. While in Auckland, make sure you tick all the must-dos off your list: we’re talking the Sky Tower (10 minutes on foot) and Auckland Domain park (28 minutes’ walk away) for a selfie on an extinct volcano.

Rooms and Dorms

All our rooms have big windows, so they're flooded with natural light in the daytime. Take your pick from double and twin privates with shared bathrooms (complete with hot showers), or mixed and female-only dorms. There are lockers, your linen's free, and you can hire a towel if you forgot yours.

Extras and activities

Arriving late? Don’t worry, there's always someone at our 24-hour reception to welcome you – you can grab your free city map here, too. If you’re having a lazy day, feel free to make the most of facilities like our two big kitchens (so there’s always somewhere to cook your favourite pasta), vending machines (for late-night snacks) and a launderette (to get your backpack smelling fresh). Chores done? Upload the travel photos you have so far using our free Wi-Fi.

A very good central place. Staff were very helpful. Good value. A bit noisy outside from the street at night but its downtown and thats not the hostels fault. Overall a very good stay.

Overall, it was a good stay. My only issues is that there was no air con in the room and that there was no place to lock up your personal items in the room (you have the option to give them to reception).

It was a nice place to stay, the staff was very friendly and cleanliness and other facilities were okay. The furniture is kind of old and random but it's not that bothering. The location is great.

Staff was friendly, hostel was clean, location was excellent. However, it was abysmally loud at night thanks to the bar(s) next door. Don’t know if other rooms were quieter, but there was shouting and loud music and glass breaking and cars honking until about 4am four of the five nights I stayed. Not the hostel’s fault, but something to be wary of if you’re a light sleeper.

It’s pretty much your basic hostel. Great central city location. Our rooms had good air flow. I wish they had bigger lockers or places to securely lock up big backpacks. I had to chose my most important stuff to put in the small lockers. Bathrooms and showers are kind of strange but not unclean or anything. Kitchen is very well stocked with stuff to use.

Super central hostel. Super easy to find and within walking distance to most major activities etc. I would however not stay here again, there's no secure way to store your stuff in the room, but the reception will store laptops etc behind the counter It is loud!! Honestly woke up at 2-5 am every morning by random people screaming, both from the inside and from the street The bathrooms doesn't have any sinks or way to wash your hands, only a pump with sanitiser and it's peak corona season.

Unfriendly and unhelpful receptionist. The room I slept in was very dirty. Nice that breakfast was included, but do not expect too much of it.
