With over 30 years of experience, we know a thing or two about good hospitality at Queen Street Backpackers. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you get it for free every morning. Need a chill-out day? Our communal lounge comes complete with DVDs and Netflix, so you can spend the day snuggled on the sofa. Refresh your reading material at our book exchange, or pair up with a fellow traveller for a game of pool. You might end up sharing a drink later at our daily happy hour in the on-site bar – cheers to that!

You’ll find us near Queen’s Wharf in the city centre. Exploring's easy – Britomart train station is just 4 minutes’ walk away, and Customs Street bus station is less than 3 minutes away. Need to get to Auckland Airport? Hop on at Customs Street and you'll be there in under 50 minutes on the Sky Bus. While in Auckland, make sure you tick all the must-dos off your list: we’re talking the Sky Tower (10 minutes on foot) and Auckland Domain park (28 minutes’ walk away) for a selfie on an extinct volcano.

Rooms and Dorms

All our rooms have big windows, so they're flooded with natural light in the daytime. Take your pick from double and twin privates with shared bathrooms (complete with hot showers), or mixed and female-only dorms. There are lockers, your linen's free, and you can hire a towel if you forgot yours.

Extras and activities

Arriving late? Don’t worry, there's always someone at our 24-hour reception to welcome you – you can grab your free city map here, too. If you’re having a lazy day, feel free to make the most of facilities like our two big kitchens (so there’s always somewhere to cook your favourite pasta), vending machines (for late-night snacks) and a launderette (to get your backpack smelling fresh). Chores done? Upload the travel photos you have so far using our free Wi-Fi.

Overall served the purpose for my one night stopover, although not much sleep, the bars going off till 4 am. I guess that is to be expected in the big smoke. After coming from a fairly quite seaside village it was fun .

Hostel is great and offers free breakfast in the morning , also it has good kitchen to cook yourself. But only draw back is the bar one below and one adjacent to it, loud music can be felt in your bed and can really ruin tour sleep as they go all out all night. Hostel's enviroment is clean as well as toilets too are clean.

The mattress was the worst I've ever slept onto. They refunded my last night after I complained, though. Great location but facilities are old and need an upgrade.

The QueenStreet backpackers is a pretty good hostel, reasonable price, average to above facilities, great location. It can get a little noisy due to street noise, I stayed here twice, I liked the place and would stay her again the next time I am in Auckland!

Good location, prison like shower. A bit busy and impersonal.

Pretty alright...not in a bad spot though. No sinks in the toilets? Also where are people brushing their teeth? (I went for in the shower)

You get what you pay for. This place was cheap, conveniently located and you got a free breakfast. It was a terrible night’s sleep, with loud music and bass rattling the windows until 4am, broken curtains and uncomfy beds (one with clumps of hair). Overall just fell a bit flat. Had very good wifi.

They upgraded us to a two person room, which was nice. And it had its own sink too which was useful. The place, however, was not clean as there were stains on the carpet and pillow/sheets, disgusting stains on the curtains, mold in the showers, and it just smelled like mildew all around. It would have been a fine hostel even with all of that since the location is excellent, but the staff was rather unfriendly. They only made eye contact and spoke to us when we checked in and checked out

The hostel is in a great location, but the room was dark and dingy. There are no sinks in the toilets, only hand sanitizer. The room wasn't clean and the windows rattled and could hear everything happening in the street. If you are trying to spend as little money as possible it's fine, otherwise stay elsewhere.

Very false advertising, looks nothing like the photos. Our room was disgusting, as well as the shared toilet and shower. Everything was stained, the floor, the curtains, the sheets. There was hair on the bed, clearly hadn’t been cleaned very well. The whole building looked very run down. There was no sink in the toilet, and no soap anywhere. So tough luck if you needed to wash your hands. Better off spending the extra money to stay somewhere else. Staff was also not friendly. Would not recommend
