Property Description

The Racing Mackerel hostel is a place for you to escape the race back home and relax with people who know how to enjoy life! The hostel was the family home for several generations of native Lacobrigans until recently, when we converted it into a place for you to stay, hang out, meet other travelers, and enjoy.
We offer a tranquil environment close enough to the fun but far enough to enjoy the quiet mornings and evenings that our side of the city center offers.

We are located within walking distance to all of Lagos' fun and interesting places like the beaches, the bars, and the historical forts. Racing Mackerel Hostel is just within the old town's historical retaining walls. During the day we're a 20 minute walk from world famous beach Praia Dona Ana but just 10 minutes from two beautiful beaches Praia dos Estudantes and Praia Batata. Lagos' history is also very close by. It's just a short walk to the old churches and the fort that protected the town in the 17th century. Adventure and water activities are everywhere in Lagos. You would be hard pressed to not find a bike rental or a kayak tour! At night, old town comes alive with its numerous bars and clubs welcoming anyone and everyone looking for a good time.

We have four rooms on offer. We have a 4-bed female only dorm and a 4-bed mixed dorm. We also have a larger 6-bed mixed dorm. We also offer one private room with a double occupancy bed in it. All rooms share bathrooms- a male bathroom and a female bathroom. Our 6-bed mixed dorm has a small balcony and all rooms have natural light from large windows. All windows have black out shutters. At Racing Mackerel, we play with the humor of the Portuguese people and their love for fish. Our rooms are decorated with fun and playful sayings about life related to fish. Racing Mackerel offers a full kitchen with washing machine, a common room with large dining table, sofa, and flat screen tv with cable channels.

I think this was actually the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Sure, it has a couple of minor flaws but the staff and people totally make up for everything. I felt like it was more of a home than a hostel, which is a really nice feeling to have when you’re travelling a lot. Big shoutout to Calum and Georgina (receptionists), you guys made our stay so much more fun. See you all again soon 😊

Really good hostel, has a pretty chilled vibe, it feels a bit like you're home. Room was spacious, kitchen was good for cooking and interacting with people. Location is very close to supermarket, restaurants and bars.

The staff were great! They were really friendly and helpful. The hostel was cosy, the 4 bed female dorm was quite spacious. The bathroom is very small, which is the only criticism I have, but the hostel was always very clean and tidy and you get fresh sheets and a pillowcase when you arrive. The hostel has a really friendly, chill vibe, not a party hostel, which was exactly what I was looking for. It's really well located - a close walk to the town centre and the beaches. Definitely recommend!

Nice, clean hostel, good location, super friendly staff. Only issue I can think of is the toilets lack privacy - they just have a flimsy curtain rather than a door. Other than that it's a nice place.

Nice dorms and communal kitchen/dining area. The bathrooms are super small! Tiny toilets and showers, a bit tricky to get changed in. The staff were a bit unprofessional and seemed more concerned about their social life than making sure everything was running smoothly.

Overall we had a lovely stay in Racing Mackerel in the four bed female dorm, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and efficient in fixing any problems or answering questions we had. Kitchen well equipped even with free washing machine and outside space to dry clothes. Room was spacious however a little hot as fan wasn't very powerful. Could have done with more space in the bathroom as there was no space to change and toilets on the small side. But other than a few minor flaws, great place

The staff was nice. The cleanliness could be improved. For exemples : I am not a smoker and seeing bowls filled with cigarettes butts discussed me. The table in the kitcheen never seemed quite clean, often dishes in the sink not washed by guests. The female bathroom is ridiculously small. You need to open the "shower" door to pick up your shampoo bottle on the floor... because there is no other place to put it. You knees touche the accordeon door (no it's not a real door) when you go to pee,

Check-in was really easy and the lady who checked me in was super nice. The beds were super firm, so much so that my limbs lost circulation while I slept. The second night I stayed there, the power kept surging, which rendered the security door useless. There was also no toilet paper in the women's or men's bathroom and when I asked the resident staff member the next morning where to find some she just shrugged at me and left. The wifi worked during the day but not at all during the night.

Wouldn't recommend staying here. Rooms and bathrooms are cramped and hot at night. The toilets don't even have a cubicle but instead a shower curtain that you have to pull around yourself. Also no real common area with any atmosphere, only a shared kitchen.
