Best hostel in the South Island! Clean, well equipped kitchen (weird smell but pretty normal in backpackers) amazing bathrooms, standard rooms and fantastic sauna and hotpool. Great if you are doing a skydive

Really really nice hostel, probably the best I’ve seen in NZ so far. Highly recommend if looking to stay in Franz Josef. Also the cookies they have at reception are amazing.

Great little set up, kitchen is huge and well equipped (love the walk in fridge with enough room for everyone's stuff), hot tub and sauna are great! Perfect location, literally a 5 minute walk to the Main Street. Would be nice to have lockers in rooms.

The hostel was good, the showers were really nice but the bathrooms didn’t have shelving/towels hooks, and if someone was in the shower no one could use the rest of the bathroom. The beds were a little creaky, but the rooms were clean and had good space for everyone. The door locked fine, but when the window was open it opened wide enough for someone to climb through if they wanted (we were on the first floor). Overall, good value for money, we were happy with our stay.

Really nice place, really big complex with a hot tub. Late check in is through the on site bar which was useful.

    Fabulous

    18 Aug 2020
The Rainforest Retreat was very relaxing atmosphere to be in after a day of Sky diving! The room could have been a bit cleaner when we arrived and there is a smell to them (I believe this is likely just the moisture), the room did have a heater which was nice. The communal kitchen and spa where very nice and the restaurant they have on the property is fantastic! Overall would stay again, might just upgrade rooms rather than staying in the 4 bed mixed dorm style.

    Very Good

    13 Mar 2020
Stayed just 1 night of 4 booked. Dining areas crowded, jam-packed, noisy. "Single room with private shared bath" was a cold, damp hut with bunk bed, regular bed, stool/bedside table, TV, mirror uselessly hung over bed. For "private shared bath" had to go outside, walk about 30 feet, go upstairs and into main dorm building, down long corridor. Five sinks. a few locked toilets and showers. Impossible for a night visit. Difficult to access Reception & Room rolling suitcase over gravel.
