Property Description

Rebel Rebel Hostel is Groningen's first container hostel! Built upon principles of upcycling and sustainability, Rebel Rebel rests on the grounds of a now-defunct sugar factory, providing an industrial ambiance and tranquility just outside the city centre.

Rebel Rebel Hostel Groningen was created to be a home away from home where travelers from near and far can meet, eat, drink, sleep, and enjoy weekly events. Pluck fresh herbs from our garden and cook up something mean in the kitchen. Sunbathe and swim at the canalside beach. Grab a local beer from the bar and swap stories with fellow Rebels in the courtyard. Hang out in the communal living room and play board games or Playstation 2 (hello again GTA Vice City). Complimentary breakfast is served every morning so you can ponder life’s more important morning questions.
About the area: Walk or bike along a canal away from the city centre, cross over on a small pedestrian bridge, and you are in a neighbourhood-sized chunk of Groningen that used to all be part of a sugar factory. It’s currently a development site with many new projects, events, and festivals on the way. Paradigm and EM2 are celebrated nightclubs that attract partygoers from all over the Netherlands and beyond, and are just a stone’s throw away from your Rebel bed. ‘Wolkenfabriek’ (‘Clouds Factory’) is a fantastic spot to grab a bite. Rebel bicycles are available for rent, and we can point you in the right direction of all the other excitement Groningen has to offer.
The property itself is in constant metamorphosis. Since its conception, Rebel Rebel Hostel Groningen has been contributed to and shaped by not only the dedicated founders and friends, but also by guests and volunteers that are just passing through.
The Rebel dorms are detached containers. The same applies for Waterloo Sunset, our container which houses the sanitary facilities. SO, since you have to leave your dorm/room to get to the showers or toilets, we advise bringing something like slippers and a bathrobe (if you don’t have seasoned hippie feet). Rebel Rebel Hostel Groningen is sustainable. This means the toilets in Waterloo Sunset are flushed with the water we’ve collected from the showers. Bring your scented shower gel and don’t pee in the shower!

The jungle room is a mixed 10 bed dorm. If you're into plants you'll feel right at home. Besides a comfortable bed you can use a locker for the safekeeping of your belongings.

Space Odyssey
This room is another mixed 10 bed dorm but with a space theme. Reach for the stars! Besides a comfortable bed you can use a locker for the safekeeping of your belongings.

The Bam
This is the newest addition to the Rebel Container family, also a mixed 10 bed dorm, with a comfortable bed & a locker.

Lazy Stardust
Our lazy stardust is a 5 bed female dorm. If you don't like boys and you do like pink, book a bunkbed made of old pallets. (This room can also be booked for a group of 5 of course). Besides a comfortable bed you can use a locker for the safekeeping of your belongings.

Queen Kitsch
The Queens room is our fabulous private room so if you would like a little more privacy you can spend the night between our kitch figurines and decorations.

Our dorms are detached containers. The same goes for our bathroom we call Waterloo Sunset because of the great view. So, since you have to leave your room to get to the showers or toilets, we advise bringing something like slippers and a bathrobe. Our Waterloo Sunset is sustainable. This means we flush the toilets with the water we’ve collected from the showers.

Incredible hostel, what a beautiful vibe and also what a story behind the building of/and maintenance of the place. Super sustainable, calm, tranquil and very cool. Sandy beach, hammocks, well decorated. Loved it, we booked a few more days as my girlfriend was finishing her thesis.

A unique hostel in storage containers. The staff were lovely, the location was close enough to the rest of of the city that renting a bike from the hostel was the easiest way to get around. I’d definitely stay again

Really great hostel with a good vibe! Love the location, which is on a 'urban like' place with bars all around. The site is creatively build and the breakfast is good. Overall great value for money.

The hostel is a bit far from the city centre, the facilities were fine (but might be a bit insufficient if more people were there at the time). The concept of the hostel (in containers) is nice and the view on the cannal is also relaxing. However, the containers seems to get quite cold/hot, but there was a heater that worked well when I stayed. There was no ladder to access the top bunk, but people were respectful in the room.

It was a nice place, but the night i was there, they have "the tournement of the year". I didnt know that before arriving, and I was coming to late to join. So there was a lot of noise- happy people playing games. So it is difficult to not be glad, because so many People had a great time, for me it just wasnt perfect. But I will endeed recommend the hostel, because it was so speciel.

Better not need to go to the toilet when it rains badly because you have to cross the whole yard to reach the toilet container. And the mattresses were really bad. Plus from the photos on the website I had booked a totally different room with wooden beds but then ended up in squeaky metal beds after all. Went in search for a different accommodation for the second night in town.

During our time at the hostel we received a lot of rudeness and hostility from the staff, charged us for coffee without informing us of the costs until the end, shower and bathroom across the courtyard and on our last night we had woken up to someone banging and kicking on our door trying to open it at 5.30am. This had all 4 of us startled and worried woken up at such an hour. Ridiculous.
