Property Description

The Refugio Terra Esperanza is a traditional family-run mountain lodge nestled in the high Ecuadorian Andes. Situated less than three hours north from Quito on the Panamerican highway and about 30 minutes by bus from Otavalo, it is the ideal location for adventure seekers, as well as for people who just want to relax and get away from it all. Surrounded by a spectacular mountain scenery, volcanos, lakes, waterfalls and caves we offer you as little or as much as you want. Come hiking with an experienced guide on some of our beautiful and sometimes challenging high altitude mountain routes, walk up to the volcano Imbabura, explore some remote and untouched lakes, canyons, creeks and elaborate cave systems, go shopping in Cacachi and Otavalo or just relax by the fire with a good book. Furthermore, our family elaborates beautiful fine-leather crafts. You can learn about the entire process and, if you like, show your creativity and put your new skills to use in the design of new models of belts, sandals, handbags, wallets or any other garment conjured by your imagination.

All of this in a friendly familiar environment where you can improve your Spanish skills for free!

Included
Our prices include accommodation and a hearty breakfast of eggs, bread, milk, and juice. Free tea, coffee and drinking water available throughout the day as well. We have shared and private rooms, a kitchen, dining area with fireplace and bar (offering free welcome drink).

We had a great trip here. Emerson gave us great tips for things to do in town and some great conversation around a fire. The rooms were clean and the blankets were warm. Great stay.

Great place to stay for anyone travelling Ecuador. Amazing nature in the surroundings and lots of possibilities to hike and see Ecuador from a less common and less known perspective. The family that owns the place are some of the nicest people you are going to meet on your entire trip and the evenings spent in front of the fire will certainly belong to the highlights of your trip.

Emerson is the man. He took my buddy and I to a sweet climbing spot after 20 minutes of meeting us. The beds are comfy. The hostel dog Zac is also lit.

The hostel is half an hour from the Ibarra center, close to some great landscapes. We were very friendly welcomed with tea by the mum of the hostel's owner Emerson. The hostel is a very atmospheric traditional house, even having a fireplace in the living room. It's a very quiet place, perfect if you need a stop from cities. Emerson provided us with a lot of helpful tips and took us to the Cubilche mountain together with a friend of his. We felt very welcomed, almost like in our own families.

The location is perfect for hiking and exploring the ranges on and around Imbabura. The place has a really rustic and cosy feel to it. I liked it a lot. The fireplace in the front room is a great attraction. The rooms were clean and although the night was cold there's a bough blankets to not feel it. Fully self-catered kitchen and big fridge. Handy. Stayed for 1 night. Emerson volunteered to take us on a hike through the clouds to Cubilche. It was a great, great day.

    Fabulous

I was warmly welcomed here by Emerson and his mother. They provided me with decent meals and a comfortable, and wonderfully warm! bed to sleep in. As well as some company around the fire in the evening. I ate dinner with Emerson and he offered his services as a guide as I wanted to climb Imbabura the next day. I would highly recommend the refuge and Emerson as a guide!

    Fabulous

This place is rustic. However there is a charm in that. Emmerson and Maria are lovely. And there are lots of opportunities to go hiking, horse-riding. Great to be in nature, sitting around a fire in the evening, chatting about life and everything else. Easiest to reach here is by taxi ($5), after that if you need to go to town, the bus which passes by all the time is only 30 cents, and takes you to the terminal where you can go to Otavalo, Quito, Colombia etc. Good break in-between cities.

We stayed there 2 nights as a couple a loved it ! We had a nice room and a comfy bed! The place is very rustic and cold. It isn't very clean either but the overall is still very pleasant. The owner Emerson is a super guy, he took us on a canyoning tour himself for a day. Great adventure !

The hostel is very rustic and not very clean either BUT the feeling there is still great! Emerson, the owner, is a very sweet guy that took us to a canyoning tour! It was very nice!! The kitchen is ok, the shower not super hot but enough. The beds are good too! I recommend that hostel if you want to get away from big cities :)
