We have an on-site restaurant that specialises in homemade burgers (plus vegetarian alternatives), all at backpacker prices, as well as our own bar that's the ideal place to relax with a beer and hang out with other travellers. You can also put your feet up in the common room. For those itching to get out and explore, good news – trams and trains are all on our doorstep. We'll give you a free city map to get you started, and we also offer free walking tours and bike rentals.

Location

Schlafmeile Hostel is in the arty and alternative Friedrichshain district of Berlin, just a 10-minute walk from the East Side Gallery, a series of murals painted onto the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall. The nearest U-Bahn and S-Bahn station, Frankfurter Allee, is an 8-minute walk away. You can get to us in 50 minutes from Berlin Tegel Airport via bus and train, and from Berlin Central Station in 15 minutes on the train.

Rooms and Dorms

Our brightly painted private apartments and mixed and female-only dorms come with storage lockers big enough for a medium-sized backpack. Some rooms have an en-suite bathroom. Reception is open until midnight if you need to ask any questions or hire a towel, and there's no curfew to worry about.

Extras and activities

Our friendly team are all locals, so we can share our insider knowledge and tell you the best places to go in Berlin to make sure you get the most out of your stay. You're welcome to cook your own meals in our communal kitchen – and there's even a supermarket just around the corner to make grabbing supplies easy. There's also free Wi-Fi in our café, so you can catch up on the news back home over a plate of homemade chips.

    Fabulous

I stopped in Berlin for a night and just wanted a cheap bed for the night. It was all I needed as I arrived at 10pm and left at 8am. There was an uncomfortable vibe outside when I arrived. It was dark and I couldnt find the hostel as it isnt clearly marked and didnt say it was in the restaurant so I had to call. Outside the buildings looked quite dodgy and dodgy looking people were hanging around outside. I had booked a mixed dorm as usual however I was the only female in a full 10 bed dorm...

Owner was a bit odd but lovely regardless. Rooms had comfortable beds but some opened directly onto the street. Overall wasn’t bad, especially given the price.

Little bit out of the city, I found the set up of the hostel abit different as the doors would lead straight outside and you had to leave the room and the hostel to get to the staff Had a good night sleep and a good lockup

It was fine. The twin room we stayed in opened directly onto the street, which meant you could hear everything happening outside. The showers weren't spotless, but were clean enough. We didn't try the breakfast. There didn't seem to be wifi available in the rooms. Let them know in advance if you have your own linen and don't want to pay the extra charge.

Unhelpful staff, smelly bathrooms, hot bedrooms. I left my luggages with them on the checkout day. When I came to get them back, no one was in the reception and everyone could just pick any of the luggages that were there and steal them. Good location though.

The room opened up into the street and several times at night people tried to get it. I had to barricade the door using the coffee table. The room itself reeked of smoke and there was a constant exit light which kept me up. Also, no WiFi in the room. The bathroom facilities were clean but the showers had little privacy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. If you have an overnight stay, maybe. Otherwise there are plenty of other hostels.

We didn’t feel safe with strangers walking in and out of our room all through the night due to a drug dealer roommate letting them in, who also made someone in our group feel very uncomfortable when she was alone in the room with him. It was fine because we were in a group but don’t come here alone. The manager was lovely and very attentive. A guy staying at the hostel kept his stuff in our room for no reason and the entire hostel had brown goo and flies on it.

I didn’t feel safe here, the door opened onto the street, the lockers in the room where full of rubbish or other peoples things - people who weren’t staying in the room - people living there full time (which is fine, but don’t put them in the same room as short stay people), never felt safe to use the kitchen, or shower - I’ve stayed in lots of hostels and this is completely different and unsafe for solo female travellers. Picked because owner by a kiwi & good price but not worth it!
