Overview

Berlin's got it all – nightlife, culture and history – and Schlafmeile Hostel is the perfect home-away-from-home to experience this vibrant city. We have an on-site restaurant that specialises in homemade burgers (plus vegetarian alternatives), all at backpacker prices, as well as our own bar that's the ideal place to relax with a beer and hang out with other travellers. You can also put your feet up in the common room. For those itching to get out and explore, good news – trams and trains are all on our doorstep. We'll give you a free city map to get you started, and we also offer free walking tours and bike rentals.

Location

Schlafmeile Hostel is in the arty and alternative Friedrichshain district of Berlin, just a 10-minute walk from the East Side Gallery, a series of murals painted onto the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall. The nearest U-Bahn and S-Bahn station, Frankfurter Allee, is an 8-minute walk away. You can get to us in 50 minutes from Berlin Tegel Airport via bus and train, and from Berlin Central Station in 15 minutes on the train.

Rooms and Dorms

Our brightly painted private apartments and mixed and female-only dorms come with storage lockers big enough for a medium-sized backpack. Some rooms have an en-suite bathroom. Reception is open until midnight if you need to ask any questions or hire a towel, and there's no curfew to worry about.

Extras and activities

Our friendly team are all locals, so we can share our insider knowledge and tell you the best places to go in Berlin to make sure you get the most out of your stay. You're welcome to cook your own meals in our communal kitchen – and there's even a supermarket just around the corner to make grabbing supplies easy. There's also free Wi-Fi in our café, so you can catch up on the news back home over a plate of homemade chips.

The hostel is quite well maintained, neat and definitely worth the price. Supermarkets and other shops are in the vicinity. The kitchen is well furnished. The staff is also responsive to requests.

    Fabulous

The hostel is probably the cheapest in Berlin with a kitchen. In fact, it's so cheap there are permanent residents living at the hostel, they're very friendly and like to chat over a beer or two (or a lot more). It's close to the area RAW, which is cool to check out as well as the East Side Gallery. It's also located close to public transport, so getting to Alexandra Platz is no problem. The food served in the bar is also good and priced nicely. Overall a nice hostel for budget traveling.

    Fabulous

We had a lovely stay at the hostel! To my surprise, it was very quiet. We opted for a hostel instead of airbnb to increase our chances to meet people and go out but it was dead, which was a shame. Apart from that, the rooms, kitchen and bathroom were sparkling clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend if you're on budget, good location too.

    Very Good

Definitely should mop the floors in the rooms more. They built a new bed in my room after first night stay but left shavings and grit on the floor; forcing me to buy sandals to stay clean! There is internet only in certain buildings; so not overall. I asked for a towel and got the greyest ugly hard towel with trash and blood spots on it! So I went and bought my own! No soap in the showers so had to buy my own! No one was there at checkout when i left 6am so had to leave keys with cleaning lady!

Very nice and laid back staff in a very affordable place. If you want to be a top clean place and some quiet you will probably not get it here. Many of the rooms are placed right against the street with doors leading out, so the rooms are very loud. If those are none of your concerns, it’s a good place to stay for a while. Beds are fine and the attached restaurant/bar has good simple food and wonderful hosts.

Not a very good atmosphere for meeting new people and all the common areas are closed after 12pm. Also reception is in a restaurant around the corner so it's very confusing when you first get there.

You shouldn't expect much for that price but we felt very uncomfortable in this hostel with the kitchen being occupied by weird people who gave us very odd vibes, bed sheets being super worn out with holes in them, especially considering we paid for them additionally, random people coming in and out, the fridge in the kitchen being very humid. We did, however, get a 5-bed dorm as a 3-bed private room, not sure if it's a plus though. The location is good, central, close to underground stations

I felt unsafe, people walking past trying to get in. Knocking at the doors and windows. Bathrooms we're always dirty, even when they'd just been cleaned. Dorm opens onto road. Never met such disrespectful guests, no rules in dorms, one guy watched movies without headphones until 3am, ate all his meals in his bed, stinking the room, fought with his girlfriend. Kitchen was good, fridges need cleaning. New Zealand tokenism was disrespectful, and racist.
