Property Description

Shelter City is right in the old centre of Amsterdam, close to the world-famous 17th century canals, Central Station, Dam Square, the Red Light District and many fabulous museums. A unique historic building with a great café and living room, peaceful garden and giant fish-pond.

The hostel is next to the Nieuwmarkt square which is famous for the mix of many cultures, international restaurants and cool cafe’s. There’s been a market here since 1614 and the castle-like Waag building at the centre of the square is from the 15th century. Spend a sunny afternoon drinking coffee on the square, enjoying the daily market and experiencing the diversity of Amsterdam life. There’s always something going on in Nieuwmarkt – it’s the place to be!

FREE: Breakfast, WiFi, Lockers, Maps, Sheets and Showers. No hidden extras - all taxes included in the low prices. Choice of rooms with 2-16 beds and shared bathrooms. The large dormitories have dividing walls between the beds. Or for more comfort and privacy choose rooms with 4 beds and a private bathroom (en-suite). Free lockers are available – bring your own padlock or buy one at reception.

24 hour reception with tourist information and discount tickets for canal cruises, bike hire and museums. Good security, free luggage storage, no curfew, no drugs and no alcohol. We have a hostel cat (called Oliver) who would love to meet you.

Run by Christian volunteers from all around the world. This not-for-profit hostel will give you a good night’s sleep in a clean and friendly atmosphere. A favourite Amsterdam hostel since 1972 with many guests coming back year after year. Come with your friends or make new ones.

As someone who isn't super religious I wasn't sure about staying in this hostel, but everyone was so friendly. The only negative was the location so close to the Red Light District, but I wasn't affected much. Everything is clean and fairly priced.

Fantastic location being just steps away from the metro and walking distance from most sights. The staff is super friendly and the breakfast is good. There’s not much of a common space so it’s a bit harder to meet people but all in all a great hostel. Would definitely stay here again.

    Very Good

Hate to say it- but unfortunately I got bed bugs there (11/17). I emailed the hostel to let them know and haven’t heard back which is frustrating. I guess that is what you get when you have 16 people in a room. It’s centrally located- right around the corner from the Red Light District. It seemed clean but sadly it wasn’t.

The beds were really creeky and noisy, the room smelt, bathrooms were untidy and the worst thing of all is me and my friend both were bitten badly by bed bugs all over my body, another person in the room had it also. Ive never had that ever before in a hostel I couldn’t wait to leave. Also there were no charging sockets on the lowerr beds

The staff were all 10/10. Unfortunately everything else was not. The room was extremely cramped, run down and lacked modern conveniences such as individual plugs and bed curtains. My roommates all got home at 2am on a Sunday night, left the light on and chatted for hours. I wouldn't normally complain about other guests but I got the vibe they weren't backpackers and might have been there long term, which is within the hostel's control.

The biggest issue with this hostel was the clear discrepancy between the pictures of the hostel online & the actual facilities. The pictures neglect to show you ONLY three toilets available for females, the black mold on the shower & the beds that do not have outlets. lockers were not secured to the wall & almost tipped completely (was at a 45 degree angle) over when pulling bags out. Safety hazards, cleanliness issues; save your money and go somewhere where they actually treat you like guests.
