Property Description

Shelter City is right in the old centre of Amsterdam, close to the world-famous 17th century canals, Central Station, Dam Square, the Red Light District and many fabulous museums. A unique historic building with a great café and living room, peaceful garden and giant fish-pond.

The hostel is next to the Nieuwmarkt square which is famous for the mix of many cultures, international restaurants and cool cafe’s. There’s been a market here since 1614 and the castle-like Waag building at the centre of the square is from the 15th century. Spend a sunny afternoon drinking coffee on the square, enjoying the daily market and experiencing the diversity of Amsterdam life. There’s always something going on in Nieuwmarkt – it’s the place to be!

FREE: Breakfast, WiFi, Lockers, Maps, Sheets and Showers. No hidden extras - all taxes included in the low prices. Choice of rooms with 2-16 beds and shared bathrooms. The large dormitories have dividing walls between the beds. Or for more comfort and privacy choose rooms with 4 beds and a private bathroom (en-suite). Free lockers are available – bring your own padlock or buy one at reception.

24 hour reception with tourist information and discount tickets for canal cruises, bike hire and museums. Good security, free luggage storage, no curfew, no drugs and no alcohol. We have a hostel cat (called Oliver) who would love to meet you.

Run by Christian volunteers from all around the world. This not-for-profit hostel will give you a good night’s sleep in a clean and friendly atmosphere. A favourite Amsterdam hostel since 1972 with many guests coming back year after year. Come with your friends or make new ones.

The hostel was super clean and the staff was really helpful. Two of the best things were free breakfast and location for sure. You get three options for breakfast which is great, as well as a hot drink of a choice. Location is super central and easy to walk to everywhere. My dorm was very clean and tidy. The hostel is not really modern or full of social activities in case you’re looking for something like that, however it’s definitely a convenient place to stay at.

Pretty good hostel, great value for money and nice & clean. Have stayed before and would probably stay again. Location is in the heart of the red light district so plenty of things to do at your doorstep. Get in early for breakfast as you might miss out on the good stuff!

A very good location, staff nice and helpful. 24h front desk. I would recommend this hostel to a friend. The only downside I would point is the lack of electrical plugs. In the rooms there were very few and there was a sign saying that one could charge the phone in the reception. It would be very nice if more plugs were installed or at least the adapters that increase the actual number of plugs. Good value for money!!!

People at the front desk were super friendly and welcoming without sounding overly welcoming. Rooms , bathroom , whole place were clean. Lockers sucked , if you twist the knobs with the padlocks on , it opens. I just hoped for the best and brought important documents with me. They do have a security camera. They have outlets and mini lights for each bed. Breakfast was yummy. So, glad I stayed here. People were a little bit more considerate and respectful since it is Christian based. I❤️it

    Fabulous

    11 Apr 2019
Everything is good and ok. Staffs are really helpful. But the building is a bit older and the beds are not quite wide. The toilet was not inside the room. Apart from that everything is cool. Specially location, just at a stone-thrown distant from Niewmarket metro station. Food was good and had a lot of options. In terms of security its a perfect palce. In common area you can read books, surf internet, play guiter of play some other games if you are in a group. But ideal place for solo travellers

Security location and staff were great. Basically a cheap place to stay in Amsterdam close to everything. Rooms are packed in and nowhere to charge electronics. But it worked for me for a few cheap nights in Amsterdam.

    Fabulous

Slightly muddled initial checkin conversations, which set a strange tone for my interactions with the staff. And of course I was aware it was Christian-owned and managed, but I didn't expect to feel like I was back at church camp, haha. (Would a glass of wine in the garden really be hurting anyone?) For the price and central location, it was definitely worth it, and a good solution since many other airbnbs and hotels were full, but for my taste, I don't plan to stay again.

    Good

    01 Apr 2019
It is a relatively cheap hostel, so you get what you pay for. It is run by volunteers and while the staff at the front desk was very good, the others were less than professional. Being a drug and alcohol free hostel expect people to stay up playing ping pong outside your window. The beds were cramped and the small lockers in the room were very specific with the lock that was required. There was a single power socket for each pair of bunks so be prepared to share.
