Property Description

Shelter City is right in the old centre of Amsterdam, close to the world-famous 17th century canals, Central Station, Dam Square, the Red Light District and many fabulous museums. A unique historic building with a great café and living room, peaceful garden and giant fish-pond.

The hostel is next to the Nieuwmarkt square which is famous for the mix of many cultures, international restaurants and cool cafe’s. There’s been a market here since 1614 and the castle-like Waag building at the centre of the square is from the 15th century. Spend a sunny afternoon drinking coffee on the square, enjoying the daily market and experiencing the diversity of Amsterdam life. There’s always something going on in Nieuwmarkt – it’s the place to be!

FREE: Breakfast, WiFi, Lockers, Maps, Sheets and Showers. No hidden extras - all taxes included in the low prices. Choice of rooms with 2-16 beds and shared bathrooms. The large dormitories have dividing walls between the beds. Or for more comfort and privacy choose rooms with 4 beds and a private bathroom (en-suite). Free lockers are available – bring your own padlock or buy one at reception.

24 hour reception with tourist information and discount tickets for canal cruises, bike hire and museums. Good security, free luggage storage, no curfew, no drugs and no alcohol. We have a hostel cat (called Oliver) who would love to meet you.

Run by Christian volunteers from all around the world. This not-for-profit hostel will give you a good night’s sleep in a clean and friendly atmosphere. A favourite Amsterdam hostel since 1972 with many guests coming back year after year. Come with your friends or make new ones.

Shelter City is famous for its warm and welcoming atmosphere - Experience Christian hospitality during your Amsterdam adventure! View House Rules

Perfect location for anything you want to do. Minutes away from the train station, around the corner from the red light district, in amongst the gorgeous canals, there’s a market on the old church grounds around the corner as well. For Christians out there looking for a more tailored experience, this is your place. They have worship and meditations, guided tours, and a great community. Great for people not of Christian faith as well. It’s safe and they’re kind, what more could you ask for?

What I will remember fondly about Shelter City is the great disposition and efficiency of the people working there. Everyone was most welcoming and provided helpful information with a smile. The hostel was very clean. The area was extremely busy until late at night but once inside Shelter City, I was in a haven of peace. I arrived on a Saturday, via Nieuw Markt a minute away. Excellent market and good cafés all around.

A really quiet and safe place amidst the hustle and bustle of the red light district. Close to all tourist destinations and public transport. Staff is friendly and helpful. I had a good stay here and especially enjoyed the pancakes served for breakfast. Would stay here again.

Nice hostel, very friendly staff, the location is amazing, comfy beds and all cleaned. Unfortunately there's no enough plugs for everyone, it was only one plug every 4 beds, the breakfast is not that good either.

Located right in the red light district. Close to a supermarket, laundry facility and shops. Staff is really friendly. Security is good. A really beautiful patio to relax in. A wonderfull cafe with food inside the hostel. Very bright and cozy atmosphere in the main area. Downfalls were the beds (not very comfortable) and facilities were very meh and semi private for men. The womens was much better. Not my favourite placr but the staff were amazing and the value is fair for what you pay.
