Property Description

Shelter City is right in the old centre of Amsterdam, close to the world-famous 17th century canals, Central Station, Dam Square, the Red Light District and many fabulous museums. A unique historic building with a great café and living room, peaceful garden and giant fish-pond.

The hostel is next to the Nieuwmarkt square which is famous for the mix of many cultures, international restaurants and cool cafe’s. There’s been a market here since 1614 and the castle-like Waag building at the centre of the square is from the 15th century. Spend a sunny afternoon drinking coffee on the square, enjoying the daily market and experiencing the diversity of Amsterdam life. There’s always something going on in Nieuwmarkt – it’s the place to be!

FREE: Breakfast, WiFi, Lockers, Maps, Sheets and Showers. No hidden extras - all taxes included in the low prices. Choice of rooms with 2-16 beds and shared bathrooms. The large dormitories have dividing walls between the beds. Or for more comfort and privacy choose rooms with 4 beds and a private bathroom (en-suite). Free lockers are available – bring your own padlock or buy one at reception.

24 hour reception with tourist information and discount tickets for canal cruises, bike hire and museums. Good security, free luggage storage, no curfew, no drugs and no alcohol. We have a hostel cat (called Oliver) who would love to meet you.

Run by Christian volunteers from all around the world. This not-for-profit hostel will give you a good night’s sleep in a clean and friendly atmosphere. A favourite Amsterdam hostel since 1972 with many guests coming back year after year. Come with your friends or make new ones.

The only thing that made me give less than 10 was the lack of energy plugs. They were definitely not enough to all of the guests.

I had a wonderful experience staying here for two nights. The workers/volunteers at the front desk and in the cafe were so sweet and helpful. The breakfasts were simple but good. The vibe was warm and homey and everyone was friendly. Perfect for me, a woman traveling solo for the first time in Amsterdam, in town for the international impro fest. I felt very safe and welcome here. Convenient location, so close to everything I needed, ATM and laundry and grocery and restaurants around the corner.

    Fabulous

Overall the hotel was pretty nice. You couldn't beat the location. The room wasn't the best that I've had. There's only 1 outlet for about every 4 beds. The front desk will charge things for you, but if you've been out all day and need to sleep next to your phone for an alarm the next morning, there's not much room for charging. I'd recommend bringing a battery pack to charge during the day and charge your phone from it at night. Other than that, pretty nice place.

I stayed in a room with 16 people and have just 1 power plug in a space to 4 beds, this is not so good. The breakfest is included but takes to long for the staffs prepare what you want.

    Good

Considering one of my friends left with 15+ bed bug bites and we paid upwards of $80 to stay for two nights, it would’ve been smarter to spend a little extra money to stay in an AirBnB. The staff was very nice/helpful but the hostel itself was rather dirty. I wouldn’t stay here again.
