Overview

In the heart of leafy Bloomsbury in central London, Smart Russell Square Hostel is a cool little hideaway. Our idea is to help you explore this pricey without breaking the bank. Just outside the hostel, you’ll find buses that run 24 hours a day so you can travel day or night for cheap. Grab a free city map from reception to start planning your to-do list, log into free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel and enjoy a cheap and cheerful breakfast daily to help cut costs so you can focus on exploring.

Location

Close to transport hubs like St Pancras Station and the London Underground, it's easy to reach sightseeing destinations and world-class museums (most of them free!) from here. You can get to Heathrow Airport in about an hour via the 'tube' as Londoners say (meaning underground), or catch the Eurostar to France from St Pancras. We're within walking distance of famous shopping precincts like Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, both around a half-hour wander, as well as top spots like Leicester Square, the National Portrait Gallery and Trafalgar Square.

Rooms and Dorms

Drawing from the city vibe, many of our dorms feature photo murals of iconic London sights. Most of our dorms are mixed, with either shared or private bathrooms. We have one female-only dorm, as well as twin rooms with private bathroom. Bed linen is free, and each dorm bed comes with a privacy curtain, a personal plug socket and a storage locker. For extra security, the hostel's front entrance and all rooms require a key-card to get in.

Extras and activities

Hang out in the common room in front of our huge TV or set up your laptop at a communal bench to catch up on your favourite series. Grab a snack from a vending machine, or head to the shared kitchen to see what’s cooking. You can chat to the 24-hour reception team for tips or to book discounted tickets to attractions like Madame Tussaud's, the London Eye and various popular West End shows.

I was just stationed for 1 night af it is technically corona times but this place was like a homeless shelter. Just older males everywhere. Cafeteria was like a prison. Good location. I paid extra for a locker. Rooms get ready hot. Nobody is taking Covid precautions. I wouldn’t recommend for a normal backpacker

Stay was okay, but the other guest made me feel uncomfortable. Many men are staying in this hostel and I felt very assaulted by them (some made weird comments, cat called me). Furthermore on my arrival I had no hot water in the shower and when I wanted to cook or eat something they only had inferior plates, cups etc. so I had to use a plastic cup for hot coffee. Some staff are friendly, but some were kind of kind. Don't expect too much of the breakfast and the kitchen area.

The beds were tiny, cramped and claustrophobic, without proper mattresses and no cover for the duvet. The shower sprayed directly onto the toilet the bathroom was so small. During the COVID pandemic I would've expected more precautions to be taken to protect people, but other than leaving the middle bunk unoccupied in our tiny room, there were none. I felt unsafe and extremely anxious. I didn't even end up staying the whole night, I had to leave. Also, there were no lockers to protect my stuff.
