Overview

In the heart of leafy Bloomsbury in central London, Smart Russell Square Hostel is a cool little hideaway. Our idea is to help you explore this pricey without breaking the bank. Just outside the hostel, you’ll find buses that run 24 hours a day so you can travel day or night for cheap. Grab a free city map from reception to start planning your to-do list, log into free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel and enjoy a cheap and cheerful breakfast daily to help cut costs so you can focus on exploring.

Location

Close to transport hubs like St Pancras Station and the London Underground, it's easy to reach sightseeing destinations and world-class museums (most of them free!) from here. You can get to Heathrow Airport in about an hour via the 'tube' as Londoners say (meaning underground), or catch the Eurostar to France from St Pancras. We're within walking distance of famous shopping precincts like Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, both around a half-hour wander, as well as top spots like Leicester Square, the National Portrait Gallery and Trafalgar Square.

Rooms and Dorms

Drawing from the city vibe, many of our dorms feature photo murals of iconic London sights. Most of our dorms are mixed, with either shared or private bathrooms. We have one female-only dorm, as well as twin rooms with private bathroom. Bed linen is free, and each dorm bed comes with a privacy curtain, a personal plug socket and a storage locker. For extra security, the hostel's front entrance and all rooms require a key-card to get in.

Extras and activities

Hang out in the common room in front of our huge TV or set up your laptop at a communal bench to catch up on your favourite series. Grab a snack from a vending machine, or head to the shared kitchen to see what’s cooking. You can chat to the 24-hour reception team for tips or to book discounted tickets to attractions like Madame Tussaud's, the London Eye and various popular West End shows.

Everything was so good - the bed was small but comfortable and private. The hostel is very near underground station - just 2 mins of walking away. It was also much cleaner than I expected. My only complaint was one of the 2 showers was broken. Hopefully I will have a chance to be back.

Definitely a place that you sleep in and not much else. I never had any problems staying as a single woman on a business trip, but it wasnt exactly comfortable and I only lasted about 4 nights before I was looking for other options. Location is great. How much you enjoy your room will definitely depend on how respectful your (many) roommates want to be.

Great location, but the beds are incredibly high if you’re on the top bunk, not helpful if you have an early flight and have to navigate downwards with whatever luggage you’d dragged up the night before. Otherwise, the staff is friendly, and the facilities are as clean as possible with as many people in the rooms as there are

The staff were kind and helpful. Rooms were fine. Showers were always clean, but not enough toilets.

Stayed in a 6 bed mixed gender dorm w/private shower & toilet. Six beds were two wide and three stories high (dangerous to climb to 3rd story as set up) in very very narrow room. Practically nowhere to put belongings and nor hang anything.. Have to turn sideways to walk in the shower/sink/toilet. Dining room area fine. Wifi spotty and unreliable. Male guests in my room were inconsiderate especially from 2a-5a when they returned too drunk to climb into their 2nd story beds.

Cramped rooms, creaking metal bunkbeds, poor ventilation, intermittent hot water, dirty carpets, carb-fat breakfasts . . . the list goes on. Perhaps typical of expensively over-rated London, but not a place I would ever stay again.

Receptionist gave me linen, told me to pick a free bed in the room and place the paper slip in an empty slot to reserve the bed. I went to the room which had a bunch of c**p sprawled all over the floor which is why I had to purchase a locker. There was 1 bed available, no linen, no slip. I proceeded to make the bed and settle in. I was rudely awoken by a staff member around 1am yelling at me that the bed was already taken and told me not to cause trouble during the night and stormed off. AVOID!!
