Overview

Featuring two barbecue decks with insane views of the Remarkables Mountains, Southern Laughter Backpackers is in pretty much the perfect location. And we've got lots of other awesomeness going for us as well, from the free nightly veggie soup to our hot tub – bliss after snowboarding or hiking. Up for partying? We get you drink deals all over town! Or if you're staying in and cooking, there are two roomy kitchens, plus two lounges with flatscreen TVs for putting your feet up while using the free Wi-Fi.

Location

Our team on the tour desk are all travel experts – make friends with them and they'll tell you what not to miss in the local area, from bungee jumping to cruising the world-class Milford Sound. To get here from Queenstown Airport, jump on the public bus. It'll take you 20 minutes to the O'Connells Mall stop, then we're a 4-minute walk from there. We're a 3-minute walk from the Skyline gondola – ride to the top for the views, then luge down for the fun!

Rooms and Dorms

All our twin and double private rooms and mixed dorms have beds that are made up on arrival with free linen and duvets. You can hire a towel from reception, so there's no excuse not to dive straight into Lake Wakatipu! Most dorms include en-suites, so you won't have to head into the corridor to look for a bathroom, and some even have their own kitchens (ideal for late-night snacks).

Extras and activities

You can go for the late check-out option if you're leaving Queenstown later in the day (or if you just had a heavy night). Drop your bag in the luggage storage and head off for a walk around the lake (the shore's just a 4-minute stroll away). We've got free city maps if you need help finding your way there. If you're cruising around New Zealand in a car, we have free off-street parking for you to use.

    Superb

Staff were very helpful, friendly and did a great job showing us around the hostel for amenities. There was plenty of free parking available offered by the hostel and a short walk to the center of Queenstown. Laundry facilities worked great (can purchase detergent packets for $2 NZ from staff). Cleanliness could be improved with the toilet and shower facilities however I greatly enjoyed my stay at this hostel and Queenstown.

Good location, pretty much in the centre of town. Staff were friendly when we spoke to them. Think the price was a bit high for the room we had. Room was clean enough but felt a bit worn out.

We felt this hostel was a good value for Queenstown with an awesome location. The pros for us were the location, recommendations from staff, huge kitchen (actually there are two!), comfy beds. It also seems to have a nice social atmosphere. Probably not the cleanest and unfortunately no breakfast included, but we were looking for a convenient, cozy, cheap stay, and it was totally that!

It was a pleasant place, although somewhat squished and crowded. Nice atmosphere otherwise and really nicely decorated. The cleanliness was okay. I was only bothered that there were almost no electrical sockets anywhere.

Ok for a couple of nights stay. The bunk beds move a lot when anyone turns and the whole place is pretty crusty but I mean it was $35 a night. Free hot tub was very nice and everyone was friendly and respectful. 8 person dorm was also split into two 4 ppl rooms which made it a bit more peaceful.

ROOM WAS POORLY MAINTAINED. THE BED WAS OLD AND COLLAPSED WITH MY WIFE BEING BITTEN BY BED BUGS, WE LEFT ONE DAY EARLIER BECAUSE WE WERE NOT HAPPY WITH THE ENTIRE COMPLEX. WITH PLUMBING ISSUES AND ADJOINING LANDING WAS ROTTEN

Dirty, broken fittings and some of the rudest staff I’ve ever met. We didn’t stay the night and left for another hostel.
