Property Description

The Surfing Donkey is a lively new hostel near the heart of San Juan Del Sur, with the largest hostel pool in town! With frequent events, pool parties, great facilities, and a welcoming staff, it's no wonder most guests end up extending their stay here. Many guests have even told us this was their best hostel experience in Central America

Located only one block South of the famous Church/park in the center of town, we're just a short walk away from the biggest bars and beach. We're in a residential area, so we have fun in the daytime, then usually take people out to the happening bars to keep it quiet at night.

Aside from the large hostel pool, other features here include:
- A fully equipped kitchen free for guests to use
- Large bar with cheap delicious drinks and plenty of specials
- Brand new, thick mattresses
- Yoga classes and occasional workshops
- Upstairs deck with a great sunset view of the city
- Lockers with power outlets inside and security camera protection
- Free high quality local coffee, a late checkout time, wifi, and more

Come check us out, we guaranty once you're here you won't want to leave! View House Rules

We had a private room that was very clean and the shower was really good, even though it was cold. Common area was cozy and the kitchen and bar were nice. Staff was a bit unfriendly for my taste and it’s a party place, so if you want a calm night, don’t go there. Otherwise, nice place if you like a good party.

Good location as the whole town in pretty small but looked tired and in need of a refurb. Pool wasn’t clean and not many people staying there despite being Sunday funday when we were there. Staff were lovely but you could definitely stay nicer places in the town for the same money.

The place needs a refurbishement. Good - central location , basic needs met, friendly owner and some staff Bad- Same pancake for breakfast every single day ; hard beds, creaky bunk beds, ventilation and heat force you to stay out from 9 am to 6 pm. Hangout areas need to be cleaner. Music played in the bar depends on the bartender and does not create a great vibe.

Our stay here was fine until the last night when the staff invited all their friends over and sat playing music and drinking very loudly right outside the dorms until 4am. On other occasions there were random drunk guys wandering around the premises (also not guests.) Sure, have a party (we like parties!), but maybe stick to the rules you impose on your guests. PS a really big spider lives in the toilets (didn't catch his name)

This is quite possibly the WORST hostel I have stayed in in Central America. The staff (excluding the English girl and Irish dude) were so rude and unhelpful, there were cockroaches in the shower, there are no doors on the dorms and the fans are useless so it is like a sauna in there. The free breakfast is one single pancake, the pool was closed almost the whole time and filthy. The hostel is very quiet and about a 5-10 min walk out of town (which isn’t nice at night). Do not stay here!!

I apologise to any offence taken but i feel i need to be honest/blunt to inform other travellers not to stay here. We were provided a 4 bed dorm when we paid for a 3 bed private, the owners simply didnt care about the guests at anytime, all the photos and mainly the pool is absolute "catfish" as its filthy and you would not use it. There is no atmosphere or effort to create some in the hostel. The icing on the cake was the attempt to overcharge us on departure.

TRAVELERS BEWARE!!! I can see how this place might have been popular at one time. When we arrived, there was not a single soul in the hostel. Not travelers, not front desk, not workers. The whole place was abandoned. The pool was green. We peaked in a room and the beds were filthy, no sheets, some mattresses were flipped over. ABANDONED!! So creeepy! We got out of there immediatly and did not bother to cancel our reservation because it was fight or flight mode. This hostel is abandoned
