Property Description

The 80's Guesthouse is located at 100 years old shophouses in the heart of Georgetown, Penang, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is only a stroll away from most of the historical landmarks like Little India, Fort Connwallis, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Khoo Kongsi, Kuan Yin Temple and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

This guesthouse is all about preserving the memories of the building, expressing the detailing, creating a natural, comfortable and authentic interior which appears to be a joy to occupy. All effort has been made to preserve as much of the character of the existing building as possible. Existing features have been left untouched while new circulation has been added. The interior retains traces of its previous incarnations in the form of sections of exposed beams, brickwork and aged door. Those incredible worn walls were simply left to be as they are – patchy and broken – without the need to make them perfect by restoring or covering them up.

The 80's guesthouse offers amazing value for travelers who looking for a comfortable and unique stay on budget. We hope the total experience will be authentic and create timeless feel to you.

80s Guesthouse was everything I hoped it would be. Despite being in an old, historic building everything felt clean and new. The showers were hot and had great water pressure (as long as everyone wasn’t showing at once). The lockers had a shelf inside making storing your whole backpack impossible, but was ultimately better for staying a little organized. The location was convenient, right on Love Lane but without the noise that usually comes with staying on a main backpacker stretch.

Very nice hostel, stayed in a 4 bed female dorm, which was equipped with lockers. Breakfast was basic but good, the staff was reeeeally nice and helpful. Location in love lane is also great as a lot of bars and restaurants are in this street and it is not far away to Chinatown, Little India, the street arts, etc. For me as a solo traveling woman it was just right! Never felt unsafe or uncomfortable - also good hostel to get to know other travelers! Definitely recommendable!

The place is clean and the air conditioning in the rooms is amazing. The staff are kind and helpful and the location is perfect! The only thing they could do better would be to offer some activities or things to meet other travelers! However I would highly recommend this place!

Stayed here 4 years ago and was happy so decided to come back. Decor and set up hasn't changed a bit. Epic showers. Comfy bunks. Great location in terms of ease of access to and from Butterworth ferry and close to Swettenham Pier. Good base to explore Georgetown. Historic building with features. Simple breakfast with fruit. Water refills. Bit quiet when I stayed.

Fantastic stay the beds are very comfy the staff are all very pleasant and helpful. Atmosphere was great and the location was fantastic. I do wish they had bathrooms upstairs as well but they is more of a architectural flaw. Overall I would highly recommend.

Nice clean spacious hostel. Powerful nice showers. Free breakfast was basic but good. We did have a problem getting on the WiFi for the first day which was annoying but Alex fixes this on the second day. tv and dvd selection good for if it rains, however they are all fake so skip. They could make better use of the back outside area to be used as a communal area. Could do with a fresh lick of paint.

Place is good looking and has massive potential but doesn't seem like it's run by anyone who travels themselves. Staff friendly enough. Pros: location is perfect - right next to all the fun stuff. Beds nice and comfy! Cons: AC was stuck on freezer mode through my, stay. The layout of the common area doesn't really invite ppl to be social. Some days the showers stank the whole place up. If they somehow could turn the backyard into a social area this hostel would be super cool and way more fun.

    Very Good

    31 Aug 2019
80s guesthouse was a nice place overall but few different issues. There was a constant loud creaking and banging noise like metal shutter doors being opened and closed heard upstairs even during the night. The wifi was pretty much non-functioning in my room upstairs and sometimes even downstairs. I booked the hostel as the facilities say 24 hour reception (needed to check out at 4am) but it actually closed at 11pm. Basically its sister hostel the Frame is much better!
