Property Description

The 80's Guesthouse is located at 100 years old shophouses in the heart of Georgetown, Penang, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is only a stroll away from most of the historical landmarks like Little India, Fort Connwallis, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Khoo Kongsi, Kuan Yin Temple and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

This guesthouse is all about preserving the memories of the building, expressing the detailing, creating a natural, comfortable and authentic interior which appears to be a joy to occupy. All effort has been made to preserve as much of the character of the existing building as possible. Existing features have been left untouched while new circulation has been added. The interior retains traces of its previous incarnations in the form of sections of exposed beams, brickwork and aged door. Those incredible worn walls were simply left to be as they are – patchy and broken – without the need to make them perfect by restoring or covering them up.

The 80's guesthouse offers amazing value for travelers who looking for a comfortable and unique stay on budget. We hope the total experience will be authentic and create timeless feel to you.

80s Guesthouse was everything I hoped it would be. Despite being in an old, historic building everything felt clean and new. The showers were hot and had great water pressure (as long as everyone wasn’t showing at once). The lockers had a shelf inside making storing your whole backpack impossible, but was ultimately better for staying a little organized. The location was convenient, right on Love Lane but without the noise that usually comes with staying on a main backpacker stretch.

The place is clean and the air conditioning in the rooms is amazing. The staff are kind and helpful and the location is perfect! The only thing they could do better would be to offer some activities or things to meet other travelers! However I would highly recommend this place!

Stayed here 4 years ago and was happy so decided to come back. Decor and set up hasn't changed a bit. Epic showers. Comfy bunks. Great location in terms of ease of access to and from Butterworth ferry and close to Swettenham Pier. Good base to explore Georgetown. Historic building with features. Simple breakfast with fruit. Water refills. Bit quiet when I stayed.

My bed in the six bed mixed dormitory was quiet, cool and comfortable. This place is at the end of Love Lane so close enough to the action without the noise. The place has plenty of rustic charm and the free breakfast was excellent. If you are a stickler for a decent hot shower this is the place for you. New Zealander (experienced, avid traveller).

Quite a quiet hostel, in a good location near restaurants, bars and shops. Close walk to get to the street art, jetty and local areas. Breakfast was basic but it was good to have included. Beds and room were comfortable with lockers. Showers are downstairs but this wasn't too much of an issue. The whole hostel was very clean and the laundry service was really useful. Would recommend staying here.

Nice hostel with a great location in China town. We booked a private room which was basic but nice and clean. Unlike the name we found there was no communal area to meet people apart from the bar but that wasn’t open until 6.30. The drinks we also very expensive here. Staff were helpful but not that welcoming and didn’t really smile.

Spent 3 nights here and were very impressed. Had a private room with double bed for the first couple of days which was very spacious, clean with great air con! The 3rd night we had a private rooms with 2 singles. We were unaware it was a bunk bed and the room was much smaller and quite cramped, however fine for the money. Breakfast included is ok, showers and toilets are good and reception helpful. Would overall recommend.

Nice hostel in Love Lane, in the middle of the city centre. Staff is very nice and helpful. The hostel is not very social, but that’s okay. Bunks are fine but there are no curtains and there is also a window connected to the corridor with full lights on the whole night, so would advice you to bring your eye mask ...
