Property Description

An ‘auberge’ translates as an ‘inn’ and ours is situated in a 1875 warehouse, which we restored and rejuvenated. The basic attributes and rich textures of the old city building: the rock walls, the old hardwood floors, the arched windows and high ceilings.

The ‘Auberge Alternative’ is an budget boutique hostel. The art of travelling moves us through internal as well as external landscapes and often a creative urge demands to link the two. The Auberge Alternative is an eco-friendly and artsy hostel providing accommodation and resources to travellers and artists alike to join us in redefining bohemia. Welcome to the Alternative.

Please note that we are on three levels, with no elevator. View House Rules

Still the best hostel ever in the best city. Love it here. There are a lot of stairs here. So realize, you will be on the stairs often. You do burn 8 calories (according to the sign) each time you climb them. Great restaurants and bars steps away. Very beautiful. Very beautiful!

Beautiful part of town, and a really cool space! There are three guitars, a boxdrum, and a keyboard free for use. A five minute walk from a waterfront. Lots of seating and a roomy kitchen. The rooms fits 9 people you often dont even notice when people are hanging out in their bunks. The lockers are very small, so most people need to leave their luggage out. The hostel is right next to a pub, and after 9pm the streets can get extremely loud, also early in the morning with working trucks.

A funky place in beautiful old Montreal. Staff are friendly & very helpful, and speak English & French (at least two of them also speak Spanish), so don't worry if you're not fluent in the local language. There ARE tons of stairs, but facilities are good. Brownie points for having wifi that works on all levels and in the dorms! The vibe is a bit strange - no one talks in the dorms, but common room is fine (though gets a tad rowdy at night). Also, the day guy (Simon?) with the hat has cool music!

Didn't expect a three bunk bed (the 9 person room). They felt very shaky, I would not have felt safe climbing to the top. Please note the hostel starts on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. However, their kitchen set up is great and we loved the location.

Overall a good experience; clean, comfortable, and well located. At my particular bunk there was no outlet (and also no light), so I couldn't charge my phone overnight, which made it very awkward to try to find ways to charge it bit by bit throughout the day. And I was disappointed that the common area actually shuts down a little after midnight, so there's nowhere to go except to bed after this time. Other than this, it was a good place, and worth the money.
