The Backpack is the highest rated Cape Town hostel for a reason. It tops the charts in all categories. My wife and I especially liked the amount of historical information about Cape Town and South Africa woven into the fabrics of the hostel. For instance, our room didn’t have a number, but rather a name, “Madiba”, which we learned is what South Africans sometimes refer to Nelson Mandela. Cool!

Great staff and location... booked for just the first night and ended up staying 5 more. The location is close to Table/hiking, but also easy walking distance to Long St (and far enough to be safe/avoid the noise). Definitely recommend and would stay again.

I enjoyed my stay at the hostel. The staff and interns are very friendly and helpful. The hostel is in a good location for going out to the different sights and not too far away from downtown, within walking distance. There are only a few bathrooms for everyone to use, which wasn’t a problem as I wasn’t there for the busy season. It was nice having breakfast included and the common areas are comfortable. I would definitely recommend this hostel and would stay there again.

I stayed during the winter. It gets cold at night but my bed had plenty of extra covers, and I never had to turn on the provided heater. Bar area is a great place to meet other travelers. I made great friends there! Happy hour beers are only 15rand - that's $1 USD!!! The staff are great, very helpful. A cleaning person turns over your bed every day so you come back from exploring to clean sheets. It's also central and you can walk to anywhere in Cape Town. Nearby bars and trendy restaurants.

I had a great time at the hostel! The rooms were clean but there was an order in my room that smelled like there was a bad leak or something a while ago. Other then that I had a great time and met some incredible people. Location is perfect because it’s right outside the CBD in a safer location. But still a close walk if you’re with a group or cheap Uber.

The Backpack had everything I needed and was in a great location - not too far from the things to do but far enough away to not be in the seedier parts of downtown! My roommates were great and the front desk provided a lot of great information on things to do and local day tours to join onto. Great bar and outdoor areas to hang out in. However, there were several family groups with young children there at the same time I was staying here, which made for a different social vibe than expected.

Amazing breakfast spread included in the price! Good security system and friendly staff. The only concern for solo travellers would be that it's in a bit of a dead zone between Kloof street and the hostel, which could pose a safety issue at night if walking alone.

Overall good experience. The security is good and the staff were very helpful. I love how focused they are on the environment and on helping the local community. I had a private room and thought it felt rather cold and damp. (It’s winter though, maybe I would feel differently about it in the summer?) You get a great view of Table Mountain. You will need an Uber to go anywhere though but those are cheap. There are lots of lockers to store valuables. The rooms have both SA and Euro outlets.

Great location! Just note that there are no lockers in the room (I stayed in the female dorms), although there are safes in a room by the kitchen that you can use. I appreciated that the beds were not bunk beds. It is a bit pricier than other options, but the work they do in the community makes it well worth it. The staff did make an effort to plan events, which was nice. Not the best for solo travelers trying to meet other solo travelers during off season, but I still had a great time.
