What a fun space! I wish I had allowed more time to enjoy the well laid out community areas. I found street parking directly across from the hostel and dinner two blocks down. I arranged for a private room because the group room was almost full and I was pretty sure climbing in and out of a top bunk would be challenging in the middle of the night if needed. However, I did need to climb stairs to the top floor, so if stairs are a challenge for you, check to see what they offer on a lower level.

Location couldn't be better and The Black elephant seems to run like a well oiled machine. Staff is super chill and friendly and the décor speaks for itself. Excellent vibes here and extra points for the 420 friendly yard space.

loved this hostel. captured the spirit of Portland and honestly who would have thought a hostel in Portland. location was great, staff was friendly and helpful. loved the outdoor garden and the well stocked kitchen. Also it's CLEAN. i've had the opportunity to stay at a lot of hostels in my life and although it was on the smaller size, this one definitely was one of the most cozy ones with a lot of character. If that's something you appreciate, you'll like this hostel.

This was a beautiful, clean and well managed hostel in Portland. The bed was super comfortable, all the amenities were good, with a very well equipped kitchen and private bathrooms for each dorm. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the centre, and has a cosy lobby. The atmosphere was decent but not amazing for meeting people. The cost is insanely high for a single dorm bed, but that’s the US for you…

The hostel itself was not bad but the guests were less than impressive. A guy spent an entire night throwing up in the bathroom. The entire floor could hear it. The dorms smelled like bad odor and the rooms were stuffy. Not good for COVID times.

No sense of community. Other than Lena, who was social and friendly, no staff said Good morning, they just talked to each other. It was FREEZING in the lobby and kitchen - 7am - 7pm front doors OPEN. People ate and stayed in the rooms under covers. There was a space heater during the day that warmed up one corner, blowing in your face, and a fireplace at night. People did not talk to one another - more an atmosphere of whispering, have you been to a hostel anywhere else?
